Charming UK village with antique shops has national park on doorstep | UK | Travel

Autumn is in full swing bringing with it sunny days, crisp fresh mornings, beautiful landscapes and cosy season. If you’re feeling tempted to book a weekend escape then there’s one charming town that is well worth adding to your radar thanks to its thriving high street, proper British pubs, friendly locals and a breathtaking national park right on the doorstep.

Petworh in West Sussex has gained quite the reputation amongst those who love to spend a few hours pottering around antiques shops and bookstores. In fact, it’s reported to be the only place outside of London where you can find over 30 art and antique dealers within a single-mile radius.

Tucked away on the edge of South Downs National Park, it can also be a great base from which to go exploring some of the incredible trails to be found in the region.

Thriving with independent shops

It’s estimated that 98 per cent of Petworth’s shops and cafes are independently owned, which contributes to its charm and homely feel. The town is made up of cobbled lanes lined with antique shops, clothes boutiques, bookshops and an impressive array of gift shops and stationery stores. If you’re planning a visit you may want to pack an empty suitcase as it’s almost impossible not to leave with a few souvenirs or two!

For those who love to go thrifting in antique shops, there are over 30 antique dealers along the thriving high street, so whether you’re after a limited edition book or want some eye-catching furniture and decor for your home, you’re unlikely to struggle to find what you’re after. Petworth Antiques Market is where you’ll find the bulk of dealers too.

Beautiful national park on doorstep

The historic market town is tucked away right on the edge of South Downs National Park, and there are various circular walking routes that start from Petworth and venture into the park’s beautiful landscapes, with a range to suit different hiking abilities. Some popular routes include the Petworth Housekeepers Tour, the trail down to Shimmings Valley, routes to Pulborough, and the 10-mile Midhurst & Duncton Mill Walk. Meanwhile the town itself boasts plenty of parks and woodlands in the region if you’re after more of a leisurely stroll after a spot of shopping, but don’t fancy committing to a full trek.

Petworth House

History fans won’t want to miss a visit to the beautiful National Trust site of Petworth House. The 17th century property is home to an impressive fine art collection, displayed across its beautiful state rooms, including artwork by the likes of Van Dyck and Turner. One highlight is the earliest English globe in existence, dating to 1592! Meanwhile the Servants’ Quarters are a popular attraction including the recreation of the kitchens, while the house’s surrounding gardens and woodlands offer another beautiful spot for a scenic stroll. The site also boasts a 700-acre Deer Park.
