‘Lanterns’ Season 2 Is Officially Happening, Details Revealed Following Hit Superhero Thriller Finale

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Lanterns Season 1 finale, “Dirt and Stars.”The credits have officially rolled on the freshman finale of HBO’s Lanterns, leaving a trail of shattered expectations and unanswered questions in its wake. Arriving as the gritty, True Detective-inspired pillar of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s expanding DCU, the series catapulted Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler into a noir mystery that forever altered the mythology of the Green Lantern Corps. While the final hours solved the overarching case, the resulting collateral damage completely and profoundly disrupted the status quo – leaving John Stewart wielding an illicit lantern battery in a universe that suddenly looks far more dangerous.

With no official renewal announced by HBO, viewers are left wondering if this massive cliffhanger is the end of the road, or if a second season is quietly in the works. Lanterns co-creator Damon Lindelof has provided a ray of hope, confirming that an early writers’ room is set up for a potential second season of the HBO series, though they’re still waiting for a formal green light from the network. While Lindelof himself will not be returning to head the sophomore effort, he told Collider that a new team of writers is already actively ideating for Season 2, mapping out the next phase of Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s cosmic detective saga:

“I can only tell you that everybody in the Season 1 room, inclusive of the writers who are working on ideating on Season 2, felt like even though we knew that it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, that the worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back and say, ‘Oh, he was a clone’ or ‘He’s only mostly dead’ in the Princess Bride vernacular.”

This is a developing story…
