The beloved fantasy world of C.S. Lewis is officially poised to return to the screen under a major new creative lens. Decades after audiences last stepped through the wardrobe, Netflix has partnered with visionary director Greta Gerwig to take on the monumental task of adapting the foundational origin story of Narnia, aka The Magician’s Nephew. Anticipation for the cinematic reimagining has been building for quite some time, amplified by the weight of immense nostalgic expectations. However, the debut of the first trailer has proven to be an instant lightning rod for viewers, splitting the audience into two fiercely opposing camps.
Serving as the first-ever big screen adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, the story follows two young children who discover magical rings that transport them between worlds, inadvertently triggering a chain of events that leads to the very birth of Narnia. To bring the sprawling cosmic adventure to life, Gerwig has assembled an all-star ensemble, pairing newcomers like David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell with heavyweights like Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, and Meryl Streep (in at least one role). However, the debut of the first trailer has completely upended expectations, sending immediate shockwaves across social media.
On one side of the divide, enthusiastic viewers are celebrating the footage as the “best in years,” praising Gerwig’s bold, visionary style and scale, specifically the cinematic grandeur of the world-building. On the other hand, literary loyalists have been quick to brand Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew as “one of the worst” interpretations committed to the screen, leveling scathing criticism at the movie’s heavy reliance on CGI and its stark departure from the aesthetic famously described in the treasured source material.
“The trailer for The Magician’s Nephew is, hands down, the best trailer I’ve seen in years,” @dsawyer wrote on X, labeling the footage “a masterwork.” Another user going by the handle @axey401 added, “Man, people were preemptively fuming over this one, but I recognize just about every scene and every line. Looks to be a very faithful adaptation with a sort of rock opera twist.” Meanwhile, @robbysoave admitted, “I would not have said that glam rock was the correct approach for Narnia, but okay you got me, I am now excited.”
Others were less enthused by the trailer, with @kmbyrne stating, “I am extremely unimpressed. This is not Narnia. This is Thor: Love and Thunder and Barbie had a baby. They make the boy a coward, they make the girl the adventurer, and Aslan is supposed to be the pinnacle of masculinity.” @Son_of_Mars_III branded it “Disney marvel slop,” while @ianmSC doubled down further, saying, “Who’d have ever guessed that giving a legendary, beloved book series like the Chronicles of Narnia to modern Hollywood would result in a bizarre, disastrous fever dream interpretation with some of the worst looking CGI backgrounds ever put on film?”
While Gerwig’s radical reimagining has certainly commanded the internet’s attention, it remains to be seen whether Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will ultimately turn out to be a genius renaissance or a disastrous misfire. Audiences will finally get to judge the full cinematic gamble for themselves when the movie arrives in theaters on Feb. 12, 2027, followed by its streaming debut on Netflix on Apr. 2, 2027.
