Those visiting this charming Norfolk village may well be reminded of the sun-drenched Provence region in France, and the comparisons are certainly justified.
Heacham is a sizeable village on Norfolk’s western coast with views across the Wash, and boasts excellent transport links – just 45 minutes by train from Cambridge city centre and approximately an hour and a half by car.
Famed for its sweeping lavender fields, ancient Roman heritage and picturesque hilltop settlements, Provence attracts countless visitors annually, but for those unable to travel there, Heacham offers a worthy alternative.
Lavender fields
The village’s crowning jewel is Norfolk Lavender, an internationally renowned destination featuring stunning lavender gardens that make for a delightful day out.

The site houses the Mill Kitchen, a farm shop, magnificent gardens and a plant centre. However, the spectacular lavender remains the main draw.
The organisation holds the National Plant Collection of Lavandula, granted by Plant Heritage, meaning they maintain a collection safeguarding more than 50 distinct lavender varieties.
Visitors can stroll through the compact lavender fields, savouring the aromatic scents wafting through the air, before enjoying refreshments in their delightful cafe.
After visiting the centre, one reviewer shared: “What a lovely place to pay a short visit too. It’s lovely to see all the different lavender growing, and they have loads of plants of different species to buy. You can see some of the old machinery they used to use and the history of the company.”

Another wrote: “Really nice place to visit. Stroll among the lavender plants and smell the strong scent. Plants are available to buy and a very well-equipped gift shop. They have an extensive collection of different English lavender.”
The beach
Much like the sun-soaked landscapes of Provence, Heacham also boasts a tranquil coastal setting, split across two distinct areas. The village is home to both The North Beach and The South Beach, each offering its own unique seaside experience.
Heacham North Beach is the livelier of the two, featuring a promenade adorned with vibrant beach huts, a café, a fish bar and a traditional seaside amusement arcade.
In contrast, Heacham South Beach provides a far more peaceful retreat, with a rugged, unspoilt landscape framed by rolling sand dunes. Climbing to the top of the dunes rewards visitors with a breathtaking panoramic view stretching across the marshes and deep into the heart of Norfolk.
Following a trip to South Beach, one delighted visitor shared: “Really lovely beach – we went early in the morning and the beach was practically deserted. The place was beautiful, so clean, and the outlook was just amazing with the swooping gulls and the lapping waves; it was perfect. My dog was so impressed she even went for a dip!”.
The picturesque village also boasts numerous dining options, with classic pubs and fish and chip establishments as prevalent as you’d expect from any British coastal resort. A short distance away lies the Royal Sandringham Estate, located approximately 15 minutes from the village, nestled within the Norfolk countryside.
