Canary Islands’ ‘best value holiday’ has 24C weather and £26 flights | Travel News | Travel

The best value hotspot in the Canary Islands has been crowned, and it boasts balmy weather and 24C temperatures during the winter months. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are already popular for winter sun breaks, but according to a study from the experts at Post Office Money, Tenerife is where Brits could get the best bang for their buck this season.

Out of all of the Canaries, Tenerife was top in the Post Office’s ‘winter sun costs barometer’, which assessed prices in popular holiday destinations across various criteria including the cost of a cup of coffee, a three-course meal with house wine, a local beer, and additional food and beverage items.

Given its warm weather, bustling resorts, beachfront promenades and volcanic landscapes, it’s not difficult to see why the island is such a hit with sun-seekers. “Tenerife offers a good mix of sunshine, convenience and value,” explained the team behind the study. “It’s also one of the cheapest European destinations in this year’s report.”

While the report examined food and beverage expenses during holidays, it didn’t include the cost of flights or package deals required to actually get there. Nevertheless, the positive news is that outside of school holiday periods (such as November or early December), there are deals to be found.

According to Skyscanner, budget flights from Britain to Tenerife are available from £26 each way (excluding additional hand baggage), while operators including TUI, easyJet Holidays, Loveholidays and On the Beach all have a wide array of last-minute deals that cater to various budgets.

Considering the flighttime is roughly four hours from the majority of British airports, it can also prove an ideal spot if you fancy a getaway but lack the annual leave to dedicate to a complete one or two-week holiday. Although Tenerife topped the Canary Islands in the rankings, Portugal’s Algarve emerged as the leading European destination for the best value winter sun break overall.

It secured sixth place in the global rankings, with Spain’s Costa del Sol following closely behind in seventh. However, the coveted title of best value holiday destination overall went to South Africa’s Cape Town, which boasted some of the lowest average prices, including local beer and three-course meals.
