Netflix’s 40-Part Legal Thriller Sets The Gold Standard For Courtroom Drama

Netflix‘s 40-part legal thriller combines murder mysteries, courtroom strategy, and high-stakes cases across four addictive seasons of legal drama. Often considered one of, if not the, best legal drama series on the platform, this 4-season Netflix series is also a massive streaming hit, generating 9.6 million views during the first week of its season 4 release. Its popularity is due in part to the successful book series that it is based on, which also inspired a critically acclaimed movie of the same name starring Matthew McConaughey, Bryan Cranston, and more.

The Lincoln Lawyer sets the gold standard for legal thriller series centered on courtroom drama on Netflix. Based on the popular book series by Michael Connelly, The Lincoln Lawyer earned a near-perfect 92% Rotten Tomatoes score across four seasons and 40 episodes, including two perfectly rated 100% seasons, with its fifth and final season expected to arrive in March 2027. As far as original legal dramas go on Netflix, The Lincoln Lawyer is as good as it gets, and this week is a great time to dive into the series if you haven’t already.

The Lincoln Lawyer Makes Every Courtroom Battle Feel Like A High-Stakes Chess Match

The Lincoln Lawyer separates itself from most other legal dramas of its kind due to the underdog nature of its protagonist, Mickey Haller, played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Unlike more corporate courtroom dramas like Suits and Damages, The Lincoln Lawyer doesn’t primarily operate within prestigious big-city law firms. Instead, Mickey runs his defense practice out of the back seat of his Lincoln car, set on the streets of modern-day Los Angeles. Because of this, The Lincoln Lawyer maintains a gritty and grounded sense of the criminal justice system and relies heavily on Mickey’s expertise and instinct rather than grandiose courtroom techniques and a case-of-the week formula.

The Lincoln Lawyer adds high-stakes tension through its courtroom drama by also operating as a 10-part thriller per season with overarching character and story arcs. The series was co-developed for television by David E. Kelly, one of television’s most prolific creators of courtroom and legal dramas, known for acclaimed series like Ally McBeal, Presumed Innocent, and Big Little Lies. By combining various courtroom scenarios with season-long mysteries, The Lincoln Lawyer feels like a sophisticated chess match that Mickey is forced to play throughout with careful, and often charismatic, calculation.

The Lincoln Lawyer Has Maintained Its Winning Formula On Netflix Across 40 Episodes

Holt McCallany in The Lincoln Lawyer

While procedural courtroom drama series like Law and Order have proven to be some of the most popular legal series of all time, The Lincoln Lawyer has achieved a winning formula that combines these classic elements with a modern streaming sensibility. For example, without getting too much into spoiler territory, Mickey is forced to come to his own defense after one of his former clients winds up dead, which completely flips the story on its head after the first season.

It’s these sorts of innovative twists that make The Lincoln Lawyer compelling, where seemingly nothing within the narrative is off the table. It certainly helps that Manuel Garcia-Rulfo gives a career-best performance as the easy-to-root-for Mickey, who always finds a way to think outside the box to achieve his goals. Supporting cast members such as Neve Campbell and Holt McCallany also add to the viewership draw of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer. These are all key reasons why audiences keep returning to The Lincoln Lawyer after four great seasons.

Netflix’s commitment to producing a fifth and final season of The Lincoln Lawyer is further evidence that it sets the gold standard for legal thrillers on the platform, one that future series within the genre will likely emulate. Although there are eight total books in Connelly’s series, the most recent of which was just published in 2025, Kelley and his co-creator Ted Humphrey decided that a five-season arc was the best creative choice for Mickey and the series. If season 5 delivers a satisfying ending, The Lincoln Lawyer may just become one of the best legal thriller series of all time.
