Warning: Spoilers for Vanished season 1Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin address Vanished season 2’s prospects following the MGM+ show’s shocking season 1 finale on February 22.
Vanished stars Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin as a couple, Alice and Tom, as the latter vanishes from a train to Arles during their romantic getaway in France. The show’s shocking season 1 finale reveals that Tom is a spy operating undercover with a global human trafficking network and that he vanished from the train to evade capture.
However, after a shipping container packed with captives is uncovered, Tom abandons his disguise to rescue them. Once the danger passes, Alice and Tom share a brief reunion, spending one night together before she chooses to leave him and heads back to the United States on her own.
Talking to TV Insider, Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin shared their thoughts on where Vanished season 2’s story could go if the show returns for a second season. Cuoco imagines that Alice would keep her distance from Europe, though Claflin, however, suggested a completely different direction, one that would reverse the dynamic from season 1. They said:
Cuoco: I don’t think she’s ever going back to France. If I was her, I’d be like [Helene], “You’re coming to me. Maybe we’ll stay in L.A. or New York.” I’d be curious what her life would be like after, but I think she should be a lot more careful. Unfortunately, it might cause her to have a lot of walls up, but I think she learned a big lesson in this experience that you just never truly know who you’re with.
Claflin: I think he probably goes looking for her. I think we turn into Vanished 2, and it’s she’s vanished, and it’s his intention to track her down.
The central mystery was wrapped up in Vanished season 1’s finale, though many storylines remain unresolved, most notably, what lies ahead for Alice and Tom. However, at the moment, Vanished has not been renewed for a second season. The show was initially promoted as a miniseries, suggesting that a second season wasn’t part of the original plan.
That said, it wouldn’t be unprecedented. Several series first labeled as limited – such as Beef, Big Little Lies, and even Kale Cuoco’s own The Flight Attendant – ultimately returned for second seasons. As of now, however, there’s been no official announcement regarding Vanished season 2.
Vanished is created by David Hilton and Preston Thompson, and, other than Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin, the show’s cast includes Matthias Schweighöfer, Karin Viard, Simon Abkarian, and Dar Zuzovsky. The show has a 46% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, coupled with a 53% audience score, indicating mixed reviews.
In ScreenRant‘s Vanished review, El Kuiper rated it five out of 10 stars and writes, “Kaley Cuoco’s latest mystery thriller offers a shallow, bingeable thrill ride… Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin’s new limited series mystery thriller offers a bingeable, adrenaline-fueled global conspiracy story but little else.”
However, Vanished has seen success streaming on MGM+, claiming the No. 1 spot on the service’s U.S. streaming chart, meaning it has a good chance of being renewed for a second season.
All four episodes of Vanished are streaming on MGM+.
