Starfleet Academy’ Episode 8 Tells Us a Lot About the Kasqians

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 8, “The Life of the Stars.”The Kasqians in Starfleet Academy are something of an enigma while also being very familiar. Star Trek introduced them via SAM (Kerrice Brooks), an emissary sent by the Kasqians to investigate what life is like among organics. Because the Kasqians have artificial origins, it’s probably inaccurate to call them a species, but race works just fine. The show largely drip-feeds information about the Kasqians to the audience, but Season 1, Episode 8, “The Life of the Stars,” brings about a deluge of fresh lore.

Those on Kasq were once holograms who were in the service of organic beings. This much was made clear before “The Life of the Stars,” but the episode clears up some of the finer points of this backstory. Furthermore, Starfleet Academy had also revealed that the Kasqians have shed their need to appear humanoid. Instead, they largely exist as non-corporeal holographic energy that isn’t entirely unlike a sort of colorful, digital cloud. With that in mind, let’s press on to some of the more interesting details about the race.

The Kasqians Are Still the Best Holo-engineers in ‘Star Trek’s 32nd Century

The understanding and development of holographic technology, which presumably covers all photonic life, has come leaps and bounds by the time of Starfleet Academy. While it was already hyper-advanced in the 24th century, sentient holograms like the Doctor (Robert Picardo) were often the result of circumstance rather than coming about via conscious intent. In the 32nd century, self-aware photonics appear to be far more numerous, although most also seem to reside on Kasq.

So, it makes sense that the Kasqians would be the leading authority on the technology that brought them into existence. After all, learning more about it all is essentially improving their medical program. After SAM was damaged in “Come, Let’s Away,” she was sent to a specialist facility in Denver for repairs. However, even Earth’s finest could only come up with an imperfect patch. It takes an uneasy visit to Kasq for SAM to receive the care she needs, although that cure is only possible with the assistance of the Doctor. Still, without the Kasqians, SAM would have been no more.

Time Passes Far Faster on Kasq

Kasq exists in a unique configuration of spacetime,” is how Holly Hunter’s Captain Ake phrases it. Then, SAM clears things up for the audience by explaining that for every five years on Kasq, only three days go by back on Earth. As the Doctor then goes on to add, this is very much a tribute to Star Trek: Voyager‘s “Blink of an Eye,” an iconic episode that revolves around an alien planet that experiences time in a similar way to Kasq. This doesn’t only allow the Kasqians to advance far faster, but it also becomes a vital quirk in allowing SAM to survive. The Doctor remains on Kasq for seventeen years to raise her as his own. This way, she has the emotional background required to handle the experience of living among organics. Without the time dilation, the USS Athena would have been without its Chief Medical Officer for far too long.

The Kasqians Intentionally Cut Themselves off From the Universe

This was something that was pretty apparent before “The Life of the Stars,” but it was good to hear it confirmed. The Makers, who are the formless Kasqians who made SAM, descend from photonic beings who were created by and served organics. When their masters died out, the Kasqians moved to Kasq, presumably building the artificial home as well. This reveal still leaves many questions unanswered while raising several others. It doesn’t explain who made the Kasqians originally, nor how long it’s been from anyone’s perspective since they cut themselves off. I’m sure more will be unveiled as the show progresses.

It Took the Makers 200 Years to Build SAM

As mentioned earlier, SAM was built by the Makers as an effort to explore the possibility of reintegrating with organic societies. The damage to SAM does not fill the Makers with confidence. After appraising Brooks’ character, they explain: “What took us two centuries to build, you killed in 209 days. Your world did this, not ours. We will not send an emissary back to the slaughter.” Although time doesn’t mean quite the same thing to the Kasqians, especially while in Kasq, this still shows how complex SAM was to build. And yet, spending so long away from organics meant the Kasqians couldn’t account for the countless variables that SAM would need to navigate.

The Kasqians Revere the Doctor

Robert Picardo as the Doctor in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Paramount+

As soon as the Doctor arrives on Kasq, the Kasqians identify him and make it known that they are aware of what his life has been like. They bring attention to the fact that Picardo’s character has lived among organics for nine centuries. With reintegration being one of the Kasqians’ primary goals, it makes sense that the Makers would be hyper-aware of the Doctor and his long life. Plus, there is likely an element of dark intrigue there. While the Kasqians’ history with their own creators is still unclear, it’s possible they were mistreated or overworked while in their service. If so, then the Kasqians likely have a poor view of organics, which would mean they are confused/interested about why the Doctor has chosen to remain among organic beings for so long.
