Rumors and speculation about what NetherRealm could have planned for its epic DC fighting game franchise, Injustice, are beginning to heat up with some real steam beneath it. NetherRealm is riding a particular kind of high right now with Mortal Kombat II (not to be mistaken with the seemingly inevitable sequel to the series’ latest game, Mortal Kombat 1) being released in theaters next week.
Apart from Injustice 2 Mobile receiving new updates, the Injustice franchise has more or less taken a backseat, allowing NetherRealm to bask in the glow of two back-to-back Mortal Kombat releases, Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1. It is possible that NetherRealm has chosen to move on to its next Mortal Kombat game to milk the franchise in a consecutive streak, but it would be about time that the studio returned to the realm of DC for Injustice 3, and that may well be the case, according to recent information.
As per MP1st, it has been reported that a Warner Bros. Games developer had listed Injustice 3 on their resume (alongside Hogwarts Legacy 2, no less, which the cited screenshot spells incorrectly). This would be the clearest proof that Injustice 3 is truly in the works at NetherRealm if legitimate, and fans who have waited patiently for the official reveal of whatever NetherRealm’s new game following Mortal Kombat 1 are foaming at the mouth about what the future of the franchise may have in store.
Reddit user Jtck421 is hoping NetherRealm broadens its scope and abandons the plot that its worldbuilding has been centered around, and many fans share their sentiment: “I can’t STAND the evil Superman storyline.” As for who might be added for Injustice 3’s playable character roster, different corners of the massive DC mythology all have their own pockets of fans, from returning characters like Blue Beetle or Black Canary to new additions like Booster Gold or Beast Boy.
User korovio tosses Terry McGinnis’ name into the fold, with a Batman from the futuristic Batman Beyond era potentially being fantastic, even alongside a more traditional iteration of Batman (as is anticipated, due to both Batman and Superman being DC and Injustice staples). And, assuming Superman is not the main villain yet again, user AlexHunterWolf considers “Darkseid, Anti-Monitor, or Doctor Manhattan.”
In general, it seems as if Injustice fans would be happiest if Injustice 3 is not actually Injustice 3, but a relaunch that explores a brand-new narrative. This would presumably be the cleanest break that NetherRealm could make from where it has backed itself into regarding Injustice 2’s two endings, and it would be a great way to warmly welcome new fans who may not be privy to the previous two games’ worth of lore in terms of who has sided with whom.
Either way, Injustice 3 possibly being on its way would be surprising to some fans and a no-brainer to others. There are certainly high expectations for the series and how it might proceed, but the blossoming of James Gunn’s cinematic DC Universe canon is sure to have some sort of positive effect on it, too.
Injustice 3 is rumored to be in development.
