‘Greenland 2’ Dethrones ‘Wuthering Heights’ as Most Popular Movie on HBO Max

Ever since it landed on HBO Max, Margot Robbie‘s newest R-Rated hit has been a streaming sensation. However, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and this past weekend, the film fell victim to a new post-apocalyptic arrival that quickly knocked Robbie’s spicy smash down a peg. Today, it’s down another rung on the ladder thanks to another movie that ties directly into HBO Max’s latest success.

Taking in $242 million at the box office earlier this year, Robbie’s Wuthering Heights is a loose adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same name. Also starring Jacob Elordi, the film follows the intense and destructive bond between Catherine Earnshaw and the orphaned Heathcliff. Featuring way more heat than Brontë ever could have imagined, the film was a big hit with audiences, earning a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics were more unforgiving of the darker interpretation of the classic story, rating it just 57%.

Added to HBO Max on May 1, Wuthering Heights found continued success on streaming following its box office run. The Gothic romance held the #1 spot in the Top 10 in the United States for nearly two weeks, and still sits in first place on the global charts. That being said, its stranglehold on the North American list finally came to an end this past weekend thanks to none other than Gerard Butler.

Gerard Butler Saves the Day (Again)

Hitting HBO Max on Friday, May 8, Greenland 2: Migration sees Butler and co-star Morena Baccarin reprising their roles of John and Allison Garrity from the first film. Set five years after the Clarke interstellar comet slammed into Earth and destroyed most of civilization, they find themselves living peacefully in an underground bunker. That is, until a massive earthquake forces them and their teenage son to abandon ship and head toward the impact crater Clarke left behind, where it’s said that humanity is starting to rebuild itself.

Released on Jan. 9, Greenland 2 was a box office dud, earning just $44 million against a $90 million budget. That being said, now that it’s finally streaming on HBO Max, the film seems to have found its audience. In just a single day, the post-apocalyptic thriller knocked Wuthering Heights down to #2, becoming the most popular movie on the platform. Of course, you can’t have one without the other, and as a result, Robbie’s R-rated hit is now down at #3 thanks to Greenland occupying second place in the Top 10 in the U.S. as well.

Will There Be a ‘Greenland 3’?

At one point, another entry in Butler’s post-apocalyptic franchise seemed almost a given. As soon as filming wrapped, producer Sébastien Raybaud noted that even though the sequel’s storyline could make the third movie tricky, “I’m sure we can find a way.”

Of course, those that have seen Greenland 2 know how it ends, so he wasn’t kidding that it would be complicated to make another movie. It would either have to be a prequel set somewhere between the first and second movie, or follow an entirely new crop of characters.

As of now, the verdict is still out on Greenland 3. Nothing has been officially announced by either Raybaud or Lionsgate, and seeing how Greenland 2 ended up losing between $80-$100 million, don’t be surprised if it never happens at all.
