Director Matt Shakman Joins A24’s ‘Discretion’ With Nicole Kidman & Elle Fanning

Best known for her decades of work on the big screen, Oscar/Emmy-winner Nicole Kidman has spent the last few years adding to her resume with high-profile TV appearances. This includes two major roles in streaming shows in 2026 alone, having played Lace in four episodes of Margo’s Got Money Troubles on Apple TV and eight episodes of Scarpetta on Prime Video. While the Australian-American star has plenty of confirmed projects on her upcoming schedule, she is now set to team up with a familiar co-star and one of the biggest recent names from the world of superhero movies.

Reported by Deadline, A24 has signed director Matt Shakman to direct the pilot and three additional episodes of a new legal thriller titled Discretion, which will be released on Paramount+. The show will feature Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, who will also both work as executive producers on the series. This will also be the third time Kidman and Fanning have worked together, having previously shared the screen in Margo’s Got Money Troubles, The Beguiled (2017), and How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

As for Shakman, he is best known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting his tenure with Marvel Studios in 2021 as the director and executive producer of WandaVision (which earned him an Emmy nomination). He then added a second MCU project to his resume by directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which became one of the best-reviewed movies in the Multiverse Saga; this was also only the second movie he had ever directed after 2014’s Cut Bank.

Discretion is written and executive produced by Chandler Baker (known for his work on The Husbands), who based the show on a fictional short story he wrote. The story will feature a woman named Lenny (Fanning), a summer associate at a prestigious law firm in Dallas, Texas, who discovers a web of NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) hiding a wild secret. When she realizes that she signed this same NDA, the information she discovers puts her in the crosshairs of this firm’s most powerful female partner, Sharon (Kidman), which throws their mentor-protégé dynamic into a strange place as the company’s secrets are thrust into the spotlight.

The series will also reunite Shakman and Fanning, following Shakman’s directing the pilot episode of Hulu’s The Great, which earned him an Emmy nomination. While details on this series’ production schedule and release are still being kept under wraps, Shakman will have plenty of familiar talent to work with and should have ample opportunity to show his expertise in the thriller genre for this new story.
