A delightful village serving a roast dinner hailed as one of the nation’s finest has been recognised as one of the country’s ‘poshest’. Shackleford in Surrey is a village situated on the outskirts of Guildford, located just a short distance from Godalming, where the festive romantic classic The Holiday is set.
It was also included among the UK’s ‘poshest villages’ in a list compiled by The Telegraph. This comes as little surprise, given the village features outstanding schools, beautiful properties and an extensive selection of pubs and restaurants. The idyllic location is encircled by some stunning countryside, making it a favourite among hikers and ramblers – and naturally, the pubs provide an excellent resting point along the route, reports the Mirror.
Indeed, one of its traditional pubs is consistently commended by patrons for serving some of the finest roast dinners.
The well-respected Shackleford’s Cyder House Inn holds a 4.7-star rating from over 700 reviews and a 2023 Traveller’s Choice Award.
One customer commended the “excellent Sunday lunch”, describing it as the “best pub roast”.
Another said: “Great food and friendly staff. Dog-friendly too.”
Others characterised it as “cosy” and praised “the best” vegan options.
Over the past year, the average price of a home in Shackleford stood at nearly £1,692,500.
Overall, the historical sold prices in Shackleford over the last year were up 7% on the previous year and down 60% from the 2022 peak of £4,225,000, according to Rightmove.
While Shackleford has no train station of its own, residents are just a 10-minute drive from Guildford and Farncombe Stations, both of which offer direct services to London.
Should you find yourself visiting Shackleford, expect a thoroughly unhurried day in a stunning corner of the country. It is not a village bursting with tourist attractions beyond the local pub, nor does it bustle with activity, but therein lies much of its appeal.
Measuring just 200 metres in length, it makes up for its size with breathtaking scenery.
