While Brian Baumgartner became famous for playing the subdued and quirky Kevin Malone on The Office for a decade, the actor himself isn’t quite so laidback.
On the latest episode of The Parent Trap podcast, hosted by Today co-host Dylan Dreyer, Baumgartner recalled a moment when he made Dreyer’s six-year-old son Oliver cry. Baumgartner and Dryer are longtime friends, and their families have vacationed together in the past.
Baumgartner and Dreyer remembered a ski trip the families once took, during which the Daytime Emmy winner was encouraging the kids to get ready for ski school. “This is me, alone, with five children,” Baumgartner explained, referring to his two daughters and Dreyer’s three sons. “And you’ve got the gloves, then they drop the gloves, you gotta have the boots, and the thing, and we were late.”
He recalled walking across the parking lot, and it was snowing heavily. “It was very bad and uncomfortable,” he said. So, the next day, he wanted to make sure they set off earlier. “So, I said, in the morning, like, ‘Guys, let’s go! We’ve gotta go! I wanna be out of here by whatever time!’”
This moment “apparently frightened Oliver,” Baumgartner added.
Dreyer said Oliver “loves breakfast,” and so he was “taking his sweet time eating breakfast, and you’re yelling, ‘We gotta go! We gotta go!’” She recalled how her son’s cheeks began to shake, and his eyes welled with tears.
“I said, ‘Did Brian yell at you?’” Dreyer continued, “and the waterworks just came out.”
In his defense, Baumgartner said he wasn’t yelling angrily; he was just trying to hurry the kids. However, Dreyer said that Baumgartner’s voice is “booming,” especially his “sarcastic voice,” noting, “When a 5-year-old doesn’t realize you’re kidding, it’s terrifying.”
“This was not me… Ollie needs to buck up,” Baumgartner joked, before saying that he’ll have a talk with Oliver. “The first thing when I see him, I’m gonna yell, ‘Ollie, come here!’”
