World Cup 2026: Ten-man England battle past co-hosts Mexico in Azteca thriller

Ten-man England defeated Mexico 3-2 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday after a gripping battle at the Estadio Azteca. Next up for the Three Lions are Norway, who stunned five-time champions Brazil thanks to an Erling Haaland brace.

Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane netted from the penalty spot as England held on grimly to secure a famous victory that sets up a quarter-final against Norway.

England hand Mexico their first World Cup loss at the Azteca

England ⁠survived a ​spirited Mexico fightback to secure a 3-2 win ​on Sunday and book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals, despite falling down to 10 men early in the second half.

Jude Bellingham scored two goals 98 seconds apart, Harry Kane converted a penalty when England were down to 10 men, and the Three Lions handed Mexico their first World Cup loss at Estadio Azteca, in a wild 3-2 victory.

Full time!! England survive!

What a match! What a stand by the 10 men, in one of the fiercest environments in football.

But heartbreak for the hosts and their fervent fans, who gave it everything they had.

Pickford holds

Mexico have another corner, nine minutes into injury time, and it ricochets off an England defender before Pickford gets hold of the ball.

The referee is called by VAR and decides Kane fouled Gutiérrez as they both tried to kick the ball in the England area.
