FF7 Rebirth: Should You Pay 2,000 Gil To Get The Protorelic From The Bandits?

Summary

  • Paying off Beck and his bandits in FF7 Rebirth unlocks the first of the Protorelics, plus valuable World Intel points for rare Materia purchases.
  • Refusing to pay Beck’s 2,000 Gil demand in FF7 Rebirth halts negotiations until the payment is made.
  • Players may need to gather resources and sell items to save up for Beck’s Protorelic in FF7 Rebirth, a non-negotiable quest requirement.

During Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, players have the option to pay off a group of bandits in exchange for a Protorelic. This is the first of FF7 Rebirth‘s Protorelic quests, each a regional goose chase after a technological artifact. Bringing these back to Chadley adds to the player’s overall World Intel, which can be used to purchase rare Materia. Finding every Protorelic in FF7 Rebirth, unlocks an optional boss fight and an all-powerful summon.

But there’s a pretty significant roadblock towards the end of the first Phenomenon Intel (Protorelic) quest line. After chasing Beck’s gang of malapropism-prone bandits across the Grasslands region, Cloud and his party finally corner them in an abandoned warehouse just outside Kalm. They’ll have to solve a brief puzzle, fight Beck and his buddies, alongside a Modified Sweeper, and finally, they’ll be able to open negotiations with the businessmen for possession of the Relic. The problem is, Beck demands 2,000 Gil, and it’s not immediately clear whether he’ll accept a lower price.

What Beck’s Protorelic Choice Affects In FF7 Rebirth

What Happens If Players Pay Beck 2,000 Gil In The Protorelic Quest

If players decide to pay Beck the 2,00 Gil in FF7 Rebirth, he’ll immediately fork over the Protorelic before congratulating himself and his cronies on a job well done. Beck’s businessmen will leave the Grasslands region, and effectively the rest of FF7 Rebirth. They won’t be seen again for the remainder of the game. Cloud will receive Chadley’s compliments, and then a short, strange vision of a yet-unknown boss on a distant island.

Completion of this quest will also reward a few points towards Cloud’s World Intel, which he can use to purchase some of the best Materia in FF7 Rebirth. With that, players are done with Phenomenon Intel quests until they reach the next area of FF7 Rebirth‘s map: the Junon Region.

Players can buy rare Materia with their Intel points from Chadley. He has a base of operations in just about every town, and is always marked on the map with a monocle-shaped icon.

But if players refuse to give Beck 2,000 Gil in FF7 Rebirth, he’ll simply close negotiations until they’re willing to pay. There’s no way around it. Beck doesn’t accept alternate forms of payment, favors in return, or even brute force. In short, Cloud has to put his money where his mouth is, or he won’t get the Protorelic.

Players Have To Pay Beck 2,000 Gil In FF7 Rebirth

Ultimately, there’s no way around paying off Beck in FF7 Rebirth. Players should consider this the final requirement in the quest line: they’ll need 2,000 Gil to complete it. This may seem like a lot so early in the game, but by the time the next few chapters go by, 2,000 Gil will seem like a pittance. Until then, there are some easy ways for players to rack up the cash they’ll need to buy the Grasslands Protorelic.

It’s easy to gather a ton of crafting materials in the early hours of FF7 Rebirth. If players have any extra, they can sell them off to merchants for a quick few Gil. It’s only possible to carry up to 99 stacks of each particular component at once, so anything picked up after that will go to waste. Or, for a more lucrative operation that requires just a bit more effort, players can use their spare crafting materials to make gear and consumables, which can be sold to merchants for a higher price than the materials alone.

Seeking out some of the Grasslands caches can also help players save up to buy Beck’s Protorelic. Scattered throughout the Grasslands region, these clusters of treasure chests may contain enough to buy the Relic in and of themselves. Each is located near an obvious landmark, so whenever an interesting structure or geographic formation appears in the world, it may be a cache. In case a player has already cleared them out and spent the cash on Queen’s Blood booster packs, then selling spare accessories, old weapons, and Materia can earn them a lot of cash quickly.

Before selling any old weapons in FF7 Rebirth, make sure the character who can equip them has already learned the attached weapon skill. If they haven’t, the player will have to buy another version of the weapon and start their progress from scratch.

If all else fails, it’s totally possible to come back to the Grasslands and pay Beck when Cloud is a little more liquid. Most quests aren’t missable, and once players have unlocked fast travel back to the Grasslands in FF7 Rebirth, they can return almost any time for the Protorelic. Again, within just a few chapters of first meeting Beck, Cloud should easily have tens of thousands of Gil in his inventory. By that point, he won’t even bat an eye at spending 2,000.

As in-game decisions go, FF7 Rebirth’s first Protorelic quest line isn’t particularly impactful. The dialogue option really only exists here so players who can’t immediately afford the 2,000 Gil have a chance to come back later. But a World Intel boost in the short term, and a much bigger reward in the long term, mean Beck’s Relic is well worth the price of admission. Just because Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s first Protorelic quest line is expensive doesn’t mean it should be skipped.
