The Nun 2 Director Reveals Hardest Scare To Pull Off

Summary

  • The director of The Nun II, Michael Chaves, reveals that the toughest scare to pull off in the horror film was a scene where Valak appears at a newspaper stand.
  • The scene required careful craftsmanship to make sure the fluttering magazines accurately represented Valak’s nun form.
  • The Nun II is receiving positive online reactions, with many praising it as better than the first film, indicating that it will deliver unique and terrifying scares.

The Nun II director Michael Chaves has opened up about the toughest scare to pull off in the horror film. The sequel sees Taissa Farmiga return as Sister Irene, having to face the demonic Valak while working at a French boarding school. The film also features the return of Jonas Bloquet as Frenchie, who became a vessel for Valak at the end of The Nun.

Speaking with Collider, Chaves discussed how the most difficult scare to conjure up in The Nun II was a scene where Valak appears at a newspaper stand. The director reveals how difficult the scene was to pull off, since they needed to make sure the fluttering magazines that become Valak’s nun form were crafted correctly. Check out what Chaves had to say below:

Well, the whole movie, honestly. [Laughs] I think the newsstand sequence was probably the biggest one. With the scares, you’re always trying to come up with something that’s unique and memorable, and it was one of the earliest ideas that I had as we first started developing the movie. And literally, it was the longest, hardest journey to get that thing pulled off. Basically, I was working on that until the end. It was like the first thing I was working on and the last thing I was working on. That was 100% a beast, and really it almost broke me. [Laughs] I didn’t know one scene could break someone, but it was a beast.

Why The Nun 2 Is A Terrifying Conjuring Prequel

Valak first debuted in The Conjuring 2 as a demonic entity haunting a family in Enfield, England. The demon has become a staple of The Conjuring universe, appearing in both The Nun film series alongside making a cameo during Annabelle: Creation. This latest film will no doubt offer up more details prior to Frenchie’s inevitable exorcist and death just before the events of The Conjuring.

During The Nun, it was established that Valak could be defeated by the blood of Jesus, something that instead simply weakened the demon. Because of this, Valak’s power will make the demon a terrifying villain in the sequel, especially now that Jesus’ blood has already been used in a vain attempt at destruction. It’s unclear how the film will play out, especially since Irene won’t be able to save Frenchie from his fate.

The Nun II first reactions online are praising the film as better than the first, no doubt meaning it will drum up plenty of unique scares. This also hints at Valak being much more dangerous in the sequel, setting up a demonic presence that may not be quelled by the end of the film. Perhaps The Nun II can explain how Valak went from Frenchie to Enfield as well, tying up another loose end in The Conjuring universe.
