Nearly 100 Chinese nationals are missing in Nepal after massive flooding at the border region, Beijing’s foreign ministry said.
“In the disaster-stricken area on the Nepalese side, the number of Chinese citizens missing is nearly 100,” ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters, adding that China’s embassy in Nepal was “seeking further verification” from Nepalese authorities.
Chinese authorities said earlier that 558 people, including 260 foreigners, were missing on the Tibet-Nepal border.
517 foreigners ‘out of contact’ after deadly floods, Nepal tourism board says
Nepal’s Tourism Board said 517 foreigners remained out of contact, more than 24 hours after a deadly flood tore through the border region with Tibet.
Among the missing are 178 from India, 65 from the United States, 53 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 35 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 25 from Canada. In addition, there are nine from Singapore, eight from Germany and eight from Russia.

Flash floods that struck the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China’s Tibet on Wednesday have killed at least 165 people.
While initial reports suggested the collapse was possibly triggered by an earthquake, the US Geological Survey said the reported tremor was in fact seismic energy generated by the collapse of glacial rock and ice, followed by debris flow.

India despatches relief packages of medecine and food to Nepal
Relief efforts are under way with India sending HADR material, medecine and food packages to Nepal.
A second flight has just taken off from India carrying 37.5 tonnes of HADR material, medicines & food packets headed for Nepal, India’s external affairs minister posted on X.

Scores of Hindu pilgrims missing in Tibet-Nepal floods
Scores of pilgrims from across the world are among the hundreds missing after deadly floods swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, popular Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru said.
The Hindu guru, whose real name is Jagdish Vasudev, posted an emotional video message from Tibet on his social media accounts, with several million followers.
Some 77 pilgrims were at the Nepal-China border immigration office when the flood hit on Wednesday, he said.
Dalai Lama prays ‘for all’ killed in Tibet-Nepal floods
Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said that he was praying for all those killed in devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet.
“I pray for all those who have lost their lives, and offer my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and to all those affected by this tragedy,” he said in a statement.

More than 1,300 are missing in Nepal and Tibet
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority in Nepal said 826 people were missing and the death toll from the country’s flash floods rose to 165, as rescue teams were searching for survivors along the Nepal-China border after a catastrophic torrent of floods and mud swept through several communities a day earlier following a glacial collapse.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV separately reported that 260 of the 558 missing people in Tibet were foreigners and two villagers were rescued.
Australia says information on 34 missing citizens in Nepal ‘very limited’
Australia Foreign Minister Penny Wong said information on at least 34 of its citizens missing in Nepal following deadly floods there was “very limited”.
Nepal says 823 out of contact after deadly floods
Nepal’s disaster agency said that 823 people remained out of contact, more than 24 hours after a deadly flood tore through the border region with Tibet.
The 823 includes at least 579 tourists, both Nepali and foreigners, it said in an update. At least 165 people are confirmed killed, in both Nepal and in China, where a further 558 people are reported missing.
558 missing after mudslide disaster in Tibet, Chinese state media says
The number of people missing in the mudslide disaster in Tibet’s Gyirong county has risen to 558, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday.
Among those, 260 were foreign nationals, CCTV said. The death toll remained at three, it said.
Nepal says 468 tourists, mainly foreigners, out of contact after floods
Nepal said 468 tourists and travellers, including 393 foreigners, remained out of contact on Thursday, 24 hours after a deadly flood tore through the border region with Tibet.
“About 468 tourists and travellers are out of contact, among them 75 are Nepalis,” Suraj Ghimire, a Department of Tourism spokesman, told AFP. At least 165 people have been confirmed killed in both Nepal and China, where a further 558 people are reported missing.
Group of 47, including 2 children, missing in Nepal floods according to a hiking company
Forty-seven people from a group including two children are missing in Nepal following devastating flooding on the country’s border with Tibet, their tour company told AFP on Thursday.
The group included 15 Australians, 10 Canadians, nine Nepalese, eight Americans, two Britons, two Singaporeans and one Russian-American dual citizen, Himalayan Glacier managing director Sanket Pandey said.
Glacial collapse caused deadly Nepal-Tibet disaster, USGS says
A glacial collapse caused seismic activity and “catastrophic” downstream impacts in Nepal and Tibet, the US Geological Survey said on Thursday.
The agency said seismic activity initially reported as an earthquake “was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow” that “caused subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream.”
US promises $500,000 in aid after ‘devastating’ Nepal floods
The US government on Wednesday extended its condolences over the deadly floods in Nepal and pledged $500,000 in emergency assistance, the State Department said.
“The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the devastating flash floods in the Rasuwa district of Nepal,” the agency said, adding that Washington was deploying a disaster response adviser to the region while pledging $500,000 to support rescue efforts.
34 Australians missing after Nepal-Tibet border floods
Thirty-four Australians are missing following flash flooding in the Nepal-Tibet border region, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday.
“At this point Nepal is a developing country, it doesn’t have the resources that an event like that would have in Australia, so information is difficult,” he told a panel discussion.
“Our thoughts are with all those who will be concerned about their loved ones today.”
