While there’s a certain satisfaction that comes with guessing a major plot twist, we can likely all agree that the best thrillers keep you guessing. Whether I’m curling up with a highly anticipated new book or sitting on my couch watching Netflix, it can be disappointing when a story doesn’t include the shock value that I hoped for. I know that many others feel the same way, which is why I was excited to put this list together.
I included eight thrillers that have genuinely shocking plot twists, whether they are revealed in a season or series finale or sprinkled along the way. One involves time travel, a few are miniseries, and one, which ran for five seasons, is my all-time favorite example of how binge-worthy the genre can be. I have also made sure not to include spoilers so everyone can enjoy these shows.

‘Dark’ (2017-2020)
A Great Tale of Time Travel Everyone Should See
Why It Has Such Great Twists: Dark has a scary premise and compelling setting (kids begin to go missing in the small town of Winden, Germany), and over three seasons, the show only gets more interesting. It’s a good pick for someone who is tired of guessing every single reveal. It’s also a good pick for someone who wants a story that features a few timelines and has an intriguing ending. Just as some perspectives in a dual-POV novel can feel lackluster, not every TV show can perfectly balance various timelines while still delivering unforgettable twists. Many would likely agree it lives up to its 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
Why You Should Watch It: If you’re interested in great shows about time travel, Dark shouldn’t be missed. It’s an emotional story that keeps you guessing and makes you think. Perhaps more than any other thriller I included on this list, Dark should be watched a few times, thanks to its intense storytelling.
‘I Will Find You’ (2026)
Harlan Coben’s Summer 2026 Story About a Missing Child
Why It Has Such Great Twists: Harlan Coben’s record-breaking Netflix thriller I Will Find You has as many plot twists as the author’s usual work. However, there’s one particular reveal near the end that I think makes this one worth watching over a few others. In the first episode, it might be easy to wonder if the story will really come together and if the truth about David Burroughs’s (Sam Worthington) son will be revealed. While some might find the explanation a little out there, I thought it made sense (at least within the confines of a Harlan Coben Netflix thriller), and I was satisfied.
Why You Should Watch It: I Will Find You has many common elements of Coben’s stories, including strong-willed main and minor characters, hidden agendas, and cliffhangers at the end of every episode. It’s true that some of these TV adaptations are more interesting than others. However, when someone is searching for a show to binge-watch in one night or one weekend, most are great choices, including this one.
‘Cruel Summer’ (2021-)
Young Adulthood, Popularity, Secrets, and Family Drama
Why It Has Such Great Twists: After watching Season 1 of Cruel Summer, I wasn’t sure that the Freeform series could top the emotional, memorable, and life-changing twist at the end. Then the Season 2 ending repeated a similar twist that reshaped every episode you had just watched, and I was just as impressed. It’s the kind of show where you assume you know each main character’s motivation, then rethink it, then wonder if your first instinct was right. The characters aren’t completely good or totally evil, and their layers are interesting to watch.
Why You Should Watch It: Along with perfect twists that are as good as that one in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense, Cruel Summer is a fascinating coming-of-age story with a fun 1990s setting. Each season tells a unique story about a disappearance and a murder, which is impressive since it’s easy to wonder just how many fresh takes there can be on those storylines.
‘We Were Liars’ (2025-)
Eight Episodes and Another Season On The Way
Why It Has Such Great Twists: We Were Liars has one main twist in the Season 1 finale, and it’s truly wild. Even though I read the young adult novel by E. Lockhart and knew what would happen, I still consider this one of the most exciting plot twists in any thriller series. In the first episode, Cady Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) promises she will share what happened to her family one strange summer, and in the last episode, it all becomes clear. Since the Prime Video thriller gets more intense with each episode, I would say everyone should see it once, but it’s even more fun to watch it a second time to see how the writers constructed the twist.
Why You Should Watch It: Season 1 has a fulfilling ending, which isn’t always the case with any kind of show, let alone a thriller. Although Season 2 hasn’t been released yet, I’m confident that it will be as good as the first eight episodes, and it will build on the smart character arcs and fun plot twists.
‘His & Hers’ (2026)
Netflix’s Completely Binge-Worthy Six-Episode 2026 Thriller
Why It Has Such Great Twists: I wrote about how watching His & Hers twice is interesting because of the plot twist at the end, and that’s why I wanted to include it on this list. Although some may have figured out who the killer was, I would say that’s fairly rare, and most will be amazed by the outcome. While there is technically one big twist in the final episode, there are enough reveals throughout that anyone looking for a truly surprising story will be satisfied.
Why You Should Watch It: His & Hers has compelling performances from Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal as a married couple who experienced a tragedy and are unsure how they fit into each other’s lives now. Rather than random red herrings that are more frustrating than anything else, the Netflix thriller focuses equally on character arcs and fascinating twists.
‘Sharp Objects’ (2018)
A Dark and Fascinating Thriller Adaptation
Why It Has Such Great Twists: In the case of this well-crafted HBO miniseries, there is one solid twist that occurs in the final episode. When most people talk about the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, they bring up the twist, which proves it’s a genuinely unsettling moment. After Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) goes back home to solve two murders, Sharp Objects tells a story equally focused on the present and the past. When you get to that one scene in the finale (and you will know which one I’m talking about right away), you’ll feel that watching it was worth it.
Why You Should Watch It: Besides the ending, Sharp Objects has an impressive cast, including Patricia Clarkson as Camille’s mother, Adora Crellin. It’s also a meaningful look at the wounds family members carry.
‘Paradise’ (2025-)
A Planned Three-Season Story About Love, Family, and the Future
Why It Has Such Great Twists: Paradise not only features a twist at the end of the first episode that is the definition of “mind-blowing,” but both seasons feature a series of surprises that change how you feel about the main characters. The Hulu show seems to be telling a political story about President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). When the first episode wraps up, we learn the truth about the setting, and it’s a compelling moment that I still think about. Season 2 features a few twists about Xavier’s (Sterling K. Brown) family, what happened on that significant day that changed everyone’s lives, and explores more of Samantha/Sinatra’s (Julianne Nicholson) life. While Paradise isn’t exactly a TV show that moves beyond its main premise, it’s worth watching once to see how small-screen storytelling can shock even those who think they have seen it all.
Why You Should Watch It: Besides the big twist in the first episode, Paradise is an inspiring story about community and why people should never give up. Shailene Woodley gives an amazing performance in Season 2 as a character who Xavier meets, and I loved learning more about Xavier’s wife Teri (Enuka Okuma) in the second season as well.
‘You’ (2018-2025)
Will Anyone Figure Out the Truth About Joe Goldberg?
Why It Has Such Great Twists: As You tells the tale of serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) over five seasons, there are too many twists to even recall. I think the best one is when Joe’s “love interest,” Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), shares big news at the end of Season 2. The final two seasons will also shock you as you wonder if anyone will figure out Joe’s evil actions and if there will ever be justice. While many thrillers have one good twist in a season or series finale, You keeps them coming, while also ensuring that every main character feels like a real person you’re eager to discover more about.
Why You Should Watch It: You is one of my favorite TV shows because of Penn Badgley’s unnerving performance, the various settings, and the genuinely gripping premise of watching a serial killer who most people think is a perfect charmer.
