A plane passenger thought they were doing a good deed when they agreed to swap seats so a child could get some sleep mid-flight. But the gesture quickly backfired.
The youngster stayed wide awake for the entire journey, leaving the traveller stuck in a seat they didn’t want – and without the window spot they’d booked.
Now, they’ve admitted they feel resentful, claiming the child’s parent put them under heavy pressure to move, and that they only gave in to avoid causing a scene in the cabin. Wanting some clarity on the situation, the travel fan asked Reddit users for their thoughts.
They wrote: “Please stop expecting random adults to give up the window seat they paid for just so your child can look out the window…
“A child was already sitting in my window seat when I got to my seat. His mother saw me, and when I told her it was my seat, she said, ‘Oh please let him sit, he’ll fall asleep in 10 mins, and then you can take your seat.'”
The passenger gave in because they didn’t want to upset anyone else on board. But regrettably, the youngster remained wide awake – not just after 10 minutes, but throughout the entire journey.
The traveller waited approximately 30 minutes before requesting their seat back from the mother, only to face yet another appeal. She responded with just four words that infuriated the passenger: “He’s getting cranky, please.”
Once more, the passenger felt unable to object and ended up occupying an aisle seat for the duration of the flight, rather than the window seat they had specifically paid for.
They explained: “So I spent the whole flight in someone else’s seat, it was an aisle seat, eyeing her, and feeling stupid for not just saying no. It honestly ruined my mood.”
The incident prompted them to issue a broader message to parents, saying that a child’s disappointment shouldn’t mean a stranger must give up the seat they’ve deliberately selected.
They continued: “I understand your child is cranky. I understand they really, really want the window seat. But, that’s a you problem, book it and pay for it in advance.”
The traveller emphasised they had no issue with children desiring window seats, but believed parents shouldn’t simply expect another passenger to give up their seat. They added: “I paid for my seat. I chose my seat. I would like to sit in my seat.”
‘Your kid is not anyone else’s responsibility’
The post generated considerable discussion, with numerous users expressing sympathy for the passenger and agreeing that parents ought to reserve the seats their children desire instead of depending on fellow travellers to relocate.
One commenter remarked: “I’m also cranky, bored, and wanting to look out of the window.”
Another added: “If it goes down in a fiery mess, I want them to know which body is mine.”
A third user commented: “I hate when people think they should get a free pass to everything just because they have a kid. Your kid is not anyone else’s responsibility.”
