Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has once again revealed more about the past of one of The Big Bang Theory‘s main characters. As the Stuart Fails to Save the Universe release schedule enters its last few weeks, many of us are wondering whether we’ll be seeing any appearances from the likes of Johnny Galecki‘s Leonard Hofstadter and Jim Parsons‘ Sheldon Cooper, or, as a compromise, at least another cameo from one of TBBT‘s other main cast members who have already popped up in the Stuart spin-off.
Well, you won’t be disappointed, as Episode 7 sees the return of Melissa Rauch as Bernadette Rostenkowski (although this Bernadette has a different surname). However, as exciting as it is to see Bernadette for a second time in the Stuart spin-off, her appearance also comes with new details about her heartbreaking backstory.
‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Delves Into Bernadette’s Pageant Past
While many of The Big Bang Theory characters have discussed their younger years in great detail, Bernadette’s childhood is one we don’t know a huge amount about. We know Bernadette played a big role in raising her siblings, which contributed to her strained relationship with her mother, but the only other thing we know is that she was a part of the pageant circuit. In The Big Bang Theory‘s “The Troll Manifestation,” there is a video of Bernadette competing for the title of Miss California Quiznos of 1999, which would’ve made her around 15 or 16 years old at the time.
The version of Bernadette we meet in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Episode 7 may not be the exact same character as the one in The Big Bang Theory, but she is the version who stuck with the pageant circuit and didn’t develop a love for microbiology and microscopes instead. In the Stuart spin-off, Bernadette reveals that her mother was an alcoholic who pushed her into pageants as a kid, and these experiences are what has led her to now run a dance studio for children.
In TBBT, Bernadette never clarifies whether she won Miss California Quiznos 1999 or any other pageants, but when we see her as a child in Young Sheldon, there is a photo of her winning a pageant, as well as the trophy she’s pictured with, sitting on her nightstand. Of course, there is the theory that Young Sheldon is set in another universe, but all that matters here is knowing that Bernadette was involved in a lot of pageants in her youth.
We already know that Bernadette’s mother could’ve been a better parent. Bernadette had previously theorized that her mother’s smoking while pregnant caused her to be so short, and she also spoke about the wild and inappropriate things her mother would do, like trying to dictate what clothes she wore by laying out outfits for her (despite not living in the same house). Mrs. Rostenkowski even ran an illegal daycare and forced her daughter to work there, so there’s no doubt that Bernadette’s mother had the knack for controlling children.
While the subject matter is darker than other moments that this spin-off has referenced, like the comic book store fire in TBBT, it’s still great to see Stuart Fails to Save the Universe delve further into the backstories of our favorite characters. Hopefully, though, this will be the end of the heartbreak and bad memories.
