One of the greatest, most recognizable, and prolific actors alive, Morgan Freeman has earned Oscar nominations for Driving Miss Daisy (1989), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and Invictus (2009) – winning an Academy Award for Million Dollar Baby (2004). His diverse filmography also includes the Western Unforgiven (1992), crime thriller Se7en (1995), comedy Bruce Almighty (2003), action movies Wanted (2008), Red (2010), Lucy (2014), and playing Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012).
Now, his 2001 thriller, Along Came a Spider, has been unearthed as a streaming hit. Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) earned him an estimated $60–$90 million from a film for which his actual on-screen salary was a fairly modest $6 million — making it, dollar-for-dollar, one of the most famously lucrative single roles in Hollywood history. He achieved this by negotiating an unusual deal structure that other actors immediately tried (and largely failed) to copy. What was it?

Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. What did Romero refuse?
✓ Correct! Romero refused to shave his trademark moustache — reportedly a vanity rule he’d had since the 1930s — so the makeup department simply caked white grease-paint over it. If you watch the 1966 episodes or Batman: The Movie (1966) on Blu-ray, you can clearly see the moustache bristles poking through the white paint above his lip. Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) — the standalone, R-rated, $1.07-billion-grossing Joaquin Phoenix vehicle that exists outside any DC continuity — was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, the most of any comic-book-derived film at the time. It won Best Actor for Phoenix. It also won exactly one other Oscar that night. Which?
✓ Correct! Best Original Score, Hildur Guðnadóttir — the Icelandic cellist and composer who, in the same awards cycle, won the Emmy and Grammy for Chernobyl (HBO, 2019). Joker’s score (anchored by the haunting cello motif during Arthur Fleck’s bathroom dance) was her breakthrough; she became the first solo woman to win Best Original Score since Marilyn Bergman in 1984 (and the fourth ever). World’s Greatest Detective — or a Gotham red herring?
Now, 25 years after its theatrical release, Along Came a Spider is No. 10 in the Top 10 overall movies and TV shows on Paramount+ in the United States as of today, September 25. It ranks below Lioness, MobLand, The Get Out, The Challenge, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Route 187, Beyond the Gates, Big Brother, and Average Joe.
Along Came a Spider is also streaming for free on Tubi, while the first film, Kiss the Girls, is also streaming on Paramount+.
The Mystery Thriller Franchise Is Returning Soon
James Patterson’s Alex Cross books were first adapted into the films Kiss the Girls (1997) and Along Came a Spider (2001), starring Morgan Freeman, which were followed by the reboot Alex Cross (2012), with Tyler Perry taking over the titular role, based specifically on the 2006 novel Cross. But after it was panned by critics and bombed at the box office, the planned sequel was canceled.
Now, the franchise continues in the form of Prime Video’s Cross series starring Aldis Hodge, which premiered in November 2024 and aired its second season earlier this year. The show has been renewed for a third season, which started filming this past April, and while an official release has not yet been announced, it should be returning soon, either late 2026 or the first half of 2027.
Showrunner Ben Watkins has teased that Cross season 3 will continue exploring addiction through the lens of Alex Cross’ relentless “addiction to the hunt” for justice. Ron Perlman has joined the cast as the recurring character Herschel Zamora, a hard-driving cop sent to Cross for therapy after several troubling work incidents.
