“Gunni” is back!
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Gunnar Nelson returns to action against Kevin Holland at UFC London this weekend (Sat., March 22, 2025) in the famous O2 Arena in London, England.
The last time Nelson was inside the Octagon, he made quick work of Bryan Barberena, tapping out “Bam Bam” in the first round with an armbar … and then, poof, he vanished.
However, that’s pretty standard for the Icelandic fighter, as he has only competed once a year for the past couple of years and just twice since 2019 (which sucks because he’s fun to watch).
Nevertheless, “Gunni” explained where he’s been to Ariel Helwani today (Tues., March 18, 2025).
“I’ve just been concentrating on other things. I’ve been coaching quite a bit, focusing on the team and not as much on myself,” Nelson said. “I was actually looking to fight a little earlier than this but couldn’t get matched up for December. So they mentioned London, and they usually want me here.”
At 36 years old and nearing the end of his career, it makes sense why Nelson is transitioning into a full-time coaching role for his team, Mjölnir MMA, located in Iceland.
For what it’s worth, Nelson is riding a two-fight win streak, his first winning streak since defeating Albert Tumenov and Alan Jouban back-to-back.
