Man orders fish and chips in Benidorm – but cost leaves him gobsmacked | Europe | Travel

Lots of people love jetting off on holiday.

After all, there’s nothing like escaping the reality of modern life, relaxing in the sun and taking some time to chill out. Another great part of travelling is the food.

A meal always tastes better when it’s prepared for you, and nothing hits the spot much like a chippy tea. But one man who recently ventured to Benidorm was left gobsmacked by the price of his fish and chips.

Harry, known as HarryTokky on TikTok, visited a chippy at the popular Spanish hotspot and ordered fish and chips with a side of curry sauce. He also ordered a Coca Cola just to wash the meal down.

When the waitress puts the plate in front of him, it’s clear to see it’s a hearty portion and Harry admitted it looked “amazing”. The curry sauce was also served in a little dish on the side, so he could add as much, or as little, as he liked.

When he goes to pay after finishing the meal, he said it came in at €13.50, which he thought was a really good price for what he bought. In fact, he dubbed the meal an “absolute bargain”.

In the clip, he didn’t specify where he ordered the meal, but it’s fair to say he was left pretty impressed. He seemed to enjoy it while also being quite pleased with the price.

He shared the video as he was interested in knowing how much people would be willing to pay for fish and chips in Benidorm. It’s clear to see people’s thoughts varied, as dozens shared their opinions with him.

To put things into perspective, the average price for a portion of fish and chips in the UK is around £9.88. At least according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2024.

Then, to further explain the maths, €13.50 equates to around £11.61, but Harry ordered a side and drink together with his meal. This likely caused the price to increase.

One person said: “Cheaper than the UK.” Another wrote: “I didn’t think it was a bargain.”

A third replied: “Shocking price.” Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “No – it’s not a bargain.”

There were some who also couldn’t get over the fact that he chose to order fish and chips while on holiday. Many seemed distracted by the idea that he could have been more daring with his food choices.

Someone chimed in with: “I would not go out to Benidorm and order fish and chips in the first place.” Another added: “Spain has incredible local food. I have no idea why someone would go there and eat fish and chips.”

One more suggested: “Great. Go on holidays and order fish, chips and curry sauce.”
