Ryan Garcia’s year-long suspension came to an end earlier this week after the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) officially lifted it per a report via ESPN, clearing him to face Rolando Romero on May 2, 2025 in Times Square.
To sweeten the pot, the World Boxing Association (WBA) has also approved for the vacant WBA regular Welterweight title to be at stake come fight night, which means “King Ry” and “Rolly” will once again have chance to win gold.
Garcia defeated Devin Haney on April 20, 2024 but was unable to win the WBC super lightweight title since he missed weight. After the bout, his victory was wiped away and ruled a no contest (NC) after he failed a post-fight drug test, leading to his aforementioned suspension.
A win for Garcia will help erase the stench he left behind with his failed drug test, which is a real shame since his performance against Haney was nothing short of dominate, knocking his rival down three times en route to winning a majority decision, which should have been unanimous.
