The Institute, the dark psychological horror series adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name, has just received a significant update. The show, created and directed by TV veteran Jack Bender, of The Sopranos, From, and Mr. Mercedes fame, will release this summer on MGM+. The premiere will be on Jul. 13, 9 PM ET/PT.
As reported by Bloody Disgusting, The Institute stars Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker, and it consists of eight episodes, although it’s not entirely clear if they will all be released on Jul. 13. The miniseries also stars Joe Freeman, Brendan Beiser, Simone Miller, Martin Roach, Julian Richings, and Hannah Galway. Per the official plot synopsis:
When 12-year-old genius Luke Ellis is kidnapped, he awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did, and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last, as his story and Luke’s are destined to collide.

Benjamin Cavell, known for his work in Justified, Homeland and the modern adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, is set to write and executive produce the show. Previously, he teased The Institute by basically drawing a connection to another King classic. And it’s because the children attending the Institute feature a talent that’s quite common in the Stephen King universe: “Kids with ‘The Shine’ [the telekinetic powers from King’s The Shining] are being kidnapped by some shadowy organization that we don’t fully understand. But the kids ultimately are able to find a way to rescue themselves. There isn’t some external force that comes and saves them, the kids have to band together and through their own ingenuity and ability, find their way out.” King himself also celebrated the release date announcement:
‘The Institute’ Is One of Several Stephen King Adaptations in 2025
2025 has already seen the long-awaited adaptation of the Stephen King short story, The Monkey. Directed by Longlegs‘ Osgood Perkins, The Monkey was a wild horror comedy ride with enough sarcasm and irony to make for one of the most original King adaptations ever made. This weekend, audiences will get the chance to see the latest King adaptation to land in theaters. Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck is adapted from the novella of the same name, and judging by the early reviews, it’s yet another triumph for the King-Flanagan creative duo.
After The Institute premieres this July, fans of the author will flock to theaters to catch the highly anticipated adaptation of The Long Walk. The dystopian story is directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamill, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, and Judy Greer.
The second half of the year will also see the release of Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, which lands in theaters on No. 7. The film stars Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Colman Domingo, and Jayme Lawson. The only King adaptation without an official release date is the prequel TV show It: Welcome to Derry, which is set to stream on HBO in late 2025.
