Champ-champ? BJJ superstar Mica Galvao looks to take out a Gracie… sort of | WNO 28 preview, how to watch

WNO 28 happens on Friday, June 13, 2025, in Costa Mesa, California and it will feature the return of Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) superstar Mica Galvao, as he takes on fellow WNO champ Jonnatas Gracie.

At just 20 years old, Galvao achieved the rare distinction of a “Super Grand Slam Winner” in 2024. He took no gi gold at ADCC 2024 and won all four major IBJJF tournaments in the gi, flexing his skills and adaptability under different rulesets. Mica followed that up by moving up a division and winning the stacked BJJ stars 15 middleweight grand prix.

After further cementing his place among the top pound-for-pound grapplers, he’s now hunting for more titles to add to his resume.

Mica Galvao currently holds the WNO welterweight title, and at WNO 28, he will once again compete at middleweight to try and become a two-division champion.

Standing in the way of Galvao’s two-division dreams, is WNO middleweight champion Jonnatas Gracie.

While Jonnatas is a champion grappler that sports the famous “Gracie” name, he isn’t actually related to the legendary jiu-jitsu family. Gracie is just a given name from his father, as a nod to the BJJ pioneers, so while Jonnatas may not be part of that family, he has actually achieved a lot more in the sport recently.

Gracie took bronze in ADCC trials as a very young blue belt in 2015, and was eventually mentored by BJJ legend Andre Galvao into a high level black belt professional. He initially won IBJJF no gi gold in 2022, and has gone 3-0 in the UFC FPI events as a pro, with wins over B-Team stars Jay Rodriguez and Nicky Ryan.

He also beat ADCC trials winner Jacob Couch for the WNO title in 2024, which he will now look to defend at WNO 28.

While certainly a very high level professional, the top pound-for-pound talent in Mica Galvao will still be the sizable favorite on this contest. Galvao is moving up a division, but they aren’t really too far off in size, as both have regularly competed at 77 kg in ADCC events.

The pair have also previously faced off in the gi, with a teenage Galvao submitting Gracie in 2022.

The other notable bouts on the WNO 28 card include CJI Trials winner Declan Moody taking on CJI 1 finalist Fellipe Andrew in a promising match up. Also on the line up is BJJ legend Xande Ribeiro, who will look to follow up on his successful return to competition, as he takes on fellow vet and CJI Trials standout Kit Dale.
