Doomsday’ Return is Unexpected After MIserable Previous Experience

While it may seem like a dream job to be an actor, the reality can often be very different if things don’t quite go as planned on a film set. That was true for X-Men star Alan Cumming, who is set to return to the Marvel fold as Nightcrawler in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and has found the whole experience much more enjoyable than when he worked on X2: X-Men United back in 2003.

This could be even bigger than ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cumming explained how his Marvel return was as much a shock to him as anyone else and was not something that he ever believed would happen. Recalling the “miserable” experience he had working on his previous X-Men outing, The Traitors host said:

“No [I didn’t expect the call to return]. There was already a younger version of my character played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. That’s happened to me several times, where there’s a remake of something I’ve done with someone younger. It’s kind of galling. But when I was asked to meet the Marvel people, nobody knew whether it was indeed Nightcrawler or some other part. It’s interesting because that was one of the films that was not a great experience at all to make — and ended up being a really great film.

“I had a miserable time making it. All of us did. It was not nice. [Marvel] was very conscious of that. It’s not finished yet, but it feels healing to go back to something that wasn’t the greatest experience and enjoy yourself. When I wrote my book, Baggage, I realized that after X-Men, I stopped doing those kinds of bigger, blockbuster-type films. I didn’t do anything like that for years. I purposely went away from that big machine because I didn’t want to be an unhappy cog. Going back to a different atmosphere, it’s really nice.”

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is the Multiverse Movie Marvel Has Been Promising For Years

The Avengers: Doomsday Cast

When the MCU opened up the multiverse, fan expectations immediately soared to levels that could only lead to disappointment. Every movie, every show, was preceded by a wave of scoopers claiming that dozens of variants would make appearances, old characters would return, and all the multiverse dreams in the world would be coming true – along with Mephisto’s appearance, obviously.

However, as the years have passed, this kind of exaggerated precursor to every new project – along with the belief that every movie would deliver the same level of action as Endgame – saw many Marvel fans become annoyed and disenchanted by the franchise, resulting in several box office “bombs.” With the cast announcement for Avengers: Doomsday, things seem to have shifted a little.

The return of the original X-Men team was not something anyone really expected, but their inclusion in the beginning of the end for the Multiverse Saga is a sign that Doomsday and Secret Wars will certainly go a long way towards making amends for all the disappointment some have felt. Where it all leads, and how it all ends is yet to be revealed, but while the journey is often more important than the ending, this time, it is all about the ending.
