The first trailer for the big-screen debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu was finally unleashed yesterday…but Star Wars fans have taken issue with the release. However, it’s not the footage itself that fans have a problem with, but rather the fact that it’s a Disney project, with many taking aim at The House of Mouse for releasing the Star Wars spin-off trailer to distract from the ongoing drama surrounding the recent cancellation of late night talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
“Disney Execs: ‘Everyone stop talking about Jimmy Kimmel! Look at the shiny new Star Wars movie!’” said one YouTube user following the release of the first The Mandalorian and Grogu footage. While rumors have circulated that the trailer’s debut was postponed following the Jimmy Kimmel fallout, Disney releasing it so quickly when the drama is still going on does seem a little suspicious. But fans aren’t falling for it.
“If only Disney could be as brave as their characters,” said this Star Wars fan, with another adding, “I don’t have Disney+ anymore. This is the way.” Since the cancellation of Kimmel (which has now been undone, with the late-night host due to return to screens) many took to some cancellations of their own: namely their Disney+ subscriptions. “Disney saw everyone cancelling subscriptions and decided to drop a trailer,” this fan mused.
However, while a large portion of the reactions so far have accused Disney of deciding to release The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer to distract from the Jimmy Kimmel drama, this fan has another theory, saying, “I think Disney is bringing back Kimmel to distract from that dogsh*t Mandalorian & Grogu trailer.”
Somehow, Jimmy Kimmel Has Returned…
Jimmy Kimmel’s long-running talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended “indefinitely” last week after the comedian used his platform to discuss the killing of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk and mocked Donald Trump’s reaction to the shooting. The fallout from the controversial move was instant, with audiences, politicians, and celebrities slamming the decision, with several major names, including The Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal, signing an open letter that condemned the cancellation of Kimmel.
Boycotting the studio and canceling your Disney+ subscription soon started to trend, with Disney reportedly losing around $1.5 billion in value as a result. Thankfully, clearer heads (or, no doubt, panicked ones) have decided to put Jimmy Kimmel back on the air, with the talk show host set to return to screens today. ABC released a statement at the time, which reads…
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
However, it’s not all over just yet, as ABC affiliate, Sinclair Broadcast Group, has not backed the decision to bring back Kimmel. “Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return,” the broadcast group said in their own statement.
