‘Enchanting’ seaside village hidden away and overlooked for famous neighbours | UK | Travel

If you’re scouting for your next coastal excursion, this charming village is just the ticket.

Nestled between Saltburn and Whitby, the former fishing port of Staithes is a dream for those who enjoy a leisurely stroll. With winding cobbled lanes leading to the harbour and quaint cottages huddled together in hues of red and cream, every nook of this splendid Yorkshire town offers a view worth pausing for.

Once a thriving fishing port, the Yorkshire village still clings to that heritage, although it’s now more suited for rambling than angling.

You can explore its numerous little galleries and cafés, or head down to the rocky beach, where families while away afternoons hunting for fossils and crabs.

With the Cleveland Way cutting right through, it’s also an excellent base for cliff-top walks with stunning North Sea vistas, reports Yorkshire Live.

The village is perhaps most famous for its artistic heritage, being home to the Staithes Group of painters. Each year the Staithes Arts Festival sees open studios and installations springing up throughout the village.

A visit to the Heritage Centre is also worthwhile, particularly for its connections to Captain Cook, who spent part of his early life here before embarking on his voyages.

Staithes is ideal for families, although it’s worth noting that the streets can be steep and potentially not pram-friendly.

If you’re considering a stay, Staithes offers an abundance of quaint cottages, many with stunning sea views.

Nestled between Saltburn and Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, Staithes is most easily accessed by car.

From the A174, follow signs leading down into the village where parking is available at the top of the bank, as vehicles are not allowed in the lower part of the village.

Staithes has been without a train station since the 1950s, so those travelling by rail should head to either Whitby or Saltburn, then continue their journey by bus or taxi.

Bus services link Staithes to Whitby, Middlesbrough and nearby coastal villages, although schedules can be sparse outside of the summer season.

Once you’ve arrived, the best way to explore is on foot.
