Billy Ray Cyrus ‘praying for my family’ after son’s letter

0

Billy Ray Cyrus called for the “start of healing for us all,” amid personal tensions that seemed to spill over on social media last week.

The 63-year-old “Achy Breaky Heart” musician on Sunday penned a message of gratitude for “the California Rain” soaking the fire-ravaged state and said he was “praying for the brokenhearted and their pain.” Also on Cyrus’ mind: his family.

“Praying for my family,” he captioned a YouTube snippet of his “Somebody Said a Prayer” music video. “For my children … sons and daughters … and their mother.”

Though Cyrus did not reveal what exactly prompted him to pray for his loved ones, it’s worth noting he released his video less than a week after 35-year-old son Trace Cyrus, whom he shares with ex-wife Tish Cyrus-Purcell, penned an emotional letter on Wednesday urging his father to get help. Trace Cyrus, whose siblings include pop singers Miley Cyrus and Noah Cyrus, addressed their father: “Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away.”

His letter added: “We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it.”

The younger Cyrus shared his letter after Billy Ray Cyrus delivered a shaky performance for President Trump’s Liberty Ball. The public plea quickly gained traction last week and on Thursday prompted Billy Ray Cyrus’ most recent ex-wife, Firerose, to speak on her own experiences.

She told Page Six that “it’s very sad to see those same struggles continue for him, but I’m glad the truth is coming to light.” Firerose and Cyrus ended their marriage in August 2024 after less than a year and after trading allegations of fraud and abuse.

Elsewhere on social media, Billy Ray Cyrus seemingly brushed off his son’s concerns, looking back at his Inauguration Day appearance and announcing new music. Most recently on Instagram, he shared a letter he received from Johnny Cash and promoted music from his former supergroup, Brother Clyde.

Trace Cyrus, on the other hand, doubled down on his efforts to reach his father.

On Saturday, he wrote another statement to Billy Ray Cyrus, noting he “could have been extremely honest about a lot more” but decided to spare followers the details. He also accused his father of threatening to take legal action over last week’s letter. “You should be ashamed of yourself,” Trace Cyrus said. “I will always love you but I no longer respect you as a man.”

He added: “Everyone close to you is terrified to tell you how they really feel. I’m not. Get help.”

A representative for Billy Ray Cyrus did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.

On Sunday, Cyrus concluded his YouTube caption: “‘The past does not equal the future.’ Amen.”

Rapper Sues Lyft After Driver Allegedly Told Her She’s Too Big for Car

0

A Detroit rapper is suing Lyft for discrimination over allegations that one of the company’s drivers told her she was too large to fit inside his car.

In a lawsuit filed in Michigan court Monday (Jan. 27), Dank Demoss (Dajua Blanding) says the driver of a black Mercedes sedan told her during the Jan. 18 incident that she was “too big” for the backseat of his car and that “his tires were not capable of supporting plaintiff’s weight.”

“Defendant Lyft … unlawfully discriminated against plaintiff based on her weight,” Blanding’s attorneys write in the lawsuit, which was obtained by Billboard. Blanding, who has described herself as a “Big Beautiful Woman” on social media, says she was embarrassed, humiliated and suffered “mental anguish.”

The lawsuit comes after Blanding posted an alleged video of the incident to TikTok and other platforms, showing her arguing with the driver over his seeming refusal to take her.

In the video, she can be heard telling the driver, “I can fit in this car,” after which he quickly responds, “Believe me, you can’t.” After telling Blanding that he’s “been in this situation before,” the driver can be heard saying that she needs to order a pricier “Uber XL” to accommodate her size.

Blanding’s post on TikTok has been viewed more than 345,000 times; another clip on Instagram has been liked more than 7,000 times.

In her complaint filed Monday, Blanding says the driver’s refusal violates Michigan’s civil rights laws, which prohibit any discrimination for public accommodations based on a variety of factors, including a person’s weight.

“Plaintiff’s weight was at least one factor that made a difference in defendants’ treatment of plaintiff and subjected her to a hostile environment,” her lawyers write.

In a statement to Billboard, a Lyft spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of a pending legal action, but stressed that its driver regulations “explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination.”

“Lyft unequivocally condemns all forms of discrimination — we believe in a community where everyone is treated with equal respect and mutual kindness,” the company said.

Lateasha Lunceford Might Skip Married to Medicine Reunion

0

As the cast of Married to Medicine prepares for the Season 11 reunion, Lateasha Lunceford is still not sure if she wants to attend. In an exclusive conversation with Reality Tea, Sweet Tea revealed that she’s on still the fence about sitting down with her co-stars. According to her, she’s focusing on other things right now.

Why Sweet Tea feels unsure about Married to Medicine Season 11’s reunion

Although Sweet Tea had a rocky introduction to the group last year, she has been finding her footing in Season 11. She joined forces with Phaedra Parks and Dr. Contessa Metcalfe to host a glamping trip. She even recruited a new friend into the circle! Regardless, Sweet Tea isn’t sold on the idea of coming together with the group for a reunion.

“I’ve debated on whether or not I was going to go,” Sweet Tea confessed.

“It’s just a lot,” she continued. “I’m focusing on my babymaking journey and all these things, and my marriage and all that. I’ve just been busy, but I’m coming around to the decision.”

So far, Season 11 of M2M has shown Sweet Tea clashing with Dr. Heavenly Kimes and trying to dance around the sticky situation of coexisting with Quad Webb. With that in mind, Sweet Tea predicted that there would be a lot to address when they reunite. We think she might luck out, and the ladies will end up spending the entire time harassing Phaedra about her Med Gala donations. You never know with this group.

Either way, Sweet Tea made it clear that she’s still weighing her decisions about what’s next. If she does decide to attend the reunion, she said she’s going to try to make the best out of it and have a good time, all while defending herself.

“I’m going to give you guys my authentic self — my real thoughts, and they’re not going to be rehearsed,” Lateasha teased. “Whatever you get out of my mouth is what you get.”

Married to Medicine continues on Bravo every Sunday at 9/8c.

TELL US – ARE YOU SURPRISED TO HEAR LATEASHA MIGHT BE SKIPPING THE SEASON 11 M2M REUNION? DO YOU THINK SHE WILL SHOW UP?

Colleen Zenk Shares Disappointment Over Jordan’s Quick Exit (Exclusive)

0

Colleen Zenk admits that she’s disappointed her run as The Young and the Restless Jordan Howard has come to an end. “I’m sad Jordan went away so quickly,” she says of her alter ego, who met her maker last week after swallowing poisoned tea. “I thought that Ian [Ray Wise] and Jordan would go out like Bonnie and Clyde together.”

Nevertheless, Zenk, who played As The World Turns’ Barbara Ryan from 1978 to the show’s finale in 2010, feels thankful to have been hired for the role after more than a decade away from soaps. “What a gift at my age and my tenure to be given that kind of character,” she reflects. “And to be able to work with the people that I worked with, first with Mel [Thomas Scott, Nikki Newman], then Amelia [Heinle, Victoria Newman] and sweet little Hayley [Erin, Claire Grace] and Eric [Braeden, Victor Newman] and then Ray [Wise]. It’s been so much fun.”

When the actress was initially tapped to play Jordan in 2023, the gig was short-term but quickly became longer. “When Josh [Griffith, executive producer/head writer] first got a hold of me, he said, ‘I’ve got this character. Are you interested? It’s only about 12 shows,’ ” she recalls. “And I said, ‘I’m in.’ And then the 12 shows turned into 50 and then I came back for another 22. It’s just been a great ride with a great group of people, from actors to production.”

Sonja Flemming/CBS

Though Zenk had plenty of daytime experience under her belt, she says she battled nerves when she showed up to the studio. “It was daunting, and I was completely intimidated,” she confides. “Coming into the show that first week, I was terrified until Eric, on our first or second day of work, looked into the camera and he said, ‘Thank God, you hired me a pro.’”

She also found many familiar faces on set to help ease her way. “There are so many people out there from World Turns and Guiding Light,” she explains. “Chris LeBlanc [Michael Baldwin, who played ATWT’s Kirk McCall], I’ve kept up with for years and I’ve known Peter Bergman [Jack Abbott] since we were both 22. So, the New Yorkers made me feel like I was home, between Vivian Gundaker, one of our main producers who was the lead producer on World Turns, who I’ve known since she was an intern, down to Fritz Brekeller, who is one of our stage managers, who I’ve known since he was an intern on World Turns. And there were just so many people that came through that I’ve known from other shows in New York. Little Lizzie Henderson [Chloe Mitchell, who played All My Children’s Maggie and Frankie Stone] and I rebonded, which was great.”

Zenk also met some new co-stars over the months she spent there. “I met Jess Walton [Jill Abbott] for the first time when she came back for Devon [Bryton James] and Abby’s [Melissa Ordway] wedding [last November],” Zenk relays. “We were in the makeup room, and she gets up out of the makeup chair, she sees me, she runs over and we both start crying because we couldn’t believe after all these years, we had never met each other. And we had that beautiful little moment in the makeup room in front of everybody, and then I never saw her again.”

Ray Wise was another actor with whom she developed a close bond. “I’ve never met Ray before, but I knew his work,” she shares. “He’s everything that everyone told me he would be. He’s the real deal. He is kind, he is supportive, he is gracious, he’s funny as hell and he’s a pure gentleman. And he’s an actor who supports other actors. I loved my time with him, and we became good friends, and he’s called a couple of times since I’ve been home just checking up on me.”

There are other performers Zenk wishes she could have shared scenes with before she wrapped her run. “I never got a chance to work with Peter [Bergman],” she laments. “I only had one day with Christian [LeBlanc]. And Michelle Stafford [Phyllis Summers]! I adore her and never got to work with her or Tracey [E. Bregman, Lauren Fenmore]. We became really good friends. I thought I was going to be in the Abbott world when I came back but that didn’t happen. I would have loved to work with the Abbotts — Peter, Eileen [Davidson, Ashley Abbott] and Beth [Maitland, Traci Abbott] — all of them over there.”

Zenk says she loved working out what made Jordan tick and going along for the ride as she descended into madness. “I wasn’t given really any direction,” she notes. “I just had to go with what was on the page and figure Jordan out myself. The only thing I kept saying to Josh Griffith was, ‘If I go too far, pull me back.’ He said, ‘You can’t go too far.’ I went, ‘OK.’ That was very freeing as an actor. I had to jump in with both feet and not even think about how out there I was being.”

The actress appreciates the support she received from the show’s devoted fans when they heard she was cast in the role, and the positive feedback since. “I didn’t expect the overwhelming welcome I got when I came back and now I’m getting the overwhelming sadness because they’re saying, ‘No, no, don’t die,’ ” she muses. “So, I’ve had it from both ends and it’s been lovely. It’s been really lovely just seeing the outpouring of love and the respect that I’ve had from everybody.”

Though she’s kept busy since her Oakdale days, Zenk reports that she fully embraced her soap return. “I’ve been able to do a lot of different things since World Turns,” she offers. “I played Tallulah Bankhead in Looped, I did Hello, Dolly! again, and I played the gun-toting madam on a Western web series called Thurston. There was also a lot that came into my lap over the last decade or so that I turned down because I didn’t feel it was right. But when Josh got a hold of me for this, I felt it was right.”

And while she wishes the job could have lasted longer, “my biggest takeaway is I can still work this medium,” Zenk declares. “I can still do this. And for my age with no work, I look pretty good on camera, not too bad. For a 72-year-old woman to be given this kind of opportunity, I’d jump in again.”

President Trump Destroys Jim Acosta with a Savage Response on Truth Social While Failed ‘Reporter’ Takes One Last Ridiculous Shot at Trump During His Final Show (VIDEO) | The Gateway Pundit

0

Credit: Mediaite

President Trump could not resist getting a few last brutal parting shots in on failing fake news nemesis Jim Acosta following news of his journalistic demise while Acosta got his own last word in on Trump during his last show.

As The Gateway Pundit reported, Acosta had reportedly decided to leave CNN after it was revealed that the struggling network was moving him to the waste-land of midnight or 2 AM. Acosta allegedly threatened to quit right away following the news.

The program would have aired at a time when cable news viewership is at its lowest level. Of course, it’s not like Acosta had many viewers to begin with.

On Tuesday morning, President Trump responded to Acosta’s ouster in a predictably savage and hilarious fashion.

“Wow, really good news! Jim Acosta, one of the worst and most dishonest reporters in journalistic history, a major sleazebag, has been relegated by CNN Fake News to the Midnight hour, “Death Valley,” because of extraordinarily BAD RATINGS (and no talent!),” Trump wrote.

“Word is that he wants to QUIT, and that would be even better,” Trump added. “Jim is a major loser who will fail no matter where he ends up. Good luck Jim!”

Acosta confirmed that he was leaving the network while telling viewers “This is no time to bow down to a tyrant!” a clear reference to Trump.

“People often ask me if the highlight of my career at CNN was at the White House covering Donald Trump,” Acosta said during his final farewell.

“Actually, no. That moment came here when I covered former President Barack Obama’s trip to Cuba in 2016 and had the chance to question the dictator there, Raul Castro, about the island’s political prisoners,” he continued.

“As the son of a Cuban refugee, I took home this lesson: It is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant.”

WATCH:

Add Acosta’s timely demise to the list in just over a week of epic wins for President Trump and America.

British man dies after being swept out to sea in Tenerife – reports | UK News

0

A British man has reportedly died after being swept out to sea in Tenerife.

The 63-year-old tourist was one of three people who got into difficulties at Los Gigantes natural swimming pool on the west side of the Spanish island, according to The Sun.

The other two people, both women, managed to get back to safety, the newspaper adds.

A local Civil Guard officer reportedly said all three were in the pool, often referred to as Crab Island natural swimming pool, when a wave “swept them into the sea”.

The officer added: “It will be up for the autopsy to determine how the British man died and whether it occurred for instance through drowning or from a blow to the head.”

Did a little known Chinese startup cause a ‘Sputnik moment’ for AI? : NPR

Did AI just have a “Sputnik moment”?

That’s what some investors, after the little known Chinese startup DeepSeek released a chatbot that experts say holds its own against industry leaders, like OpenAI and Google, despite being made with less money and computing power.

Buzz around DeepSeek built into a wave of concern that hammered tech stocks on Monday. It wiped almost $600bn from chipmaker Nvidia’s market value.

Not iterative or evolutionary, but pathbreaking

“This is, I think, something that has really shown to some degree how much the U.S. was living in a bubble,” said Antonia Hmaidi, a senior analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin.

“OpenAI and companies like OpenAI had really bet on scaling being sort of infinite, and needing to buy more and more and more chips for performance to improve.”

What DeepSeek showed, she said, is that there are different paths.

The company says it used a little more than 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs to train the bot, and it did so in a matter of weeks for $5.6 million. Others have reportedly deployed 10,000 or more GPUs, and spent upwards of $100 million or more to get similar results.

Marina Zhang, a scholar with University of Technology Sydney, said DeepSeek has also demonstrated a new kind of innovation for China – not iterative or evolutionary, but pathbreaking.

“They’re not really following existing models,” she said. “It’s basically based on algorithm optimization, using software to break through the constraints of not enough computational power.”

Have the U.S. chip export controls failed?

Those constraints were imposed on China by the United States. In 2022, the Biden Administration banned the export of cutting edge microchips to China, arguing that they could be used to enhance the Chinese military.

Zhang said DeepSeek has shown that the chip blockade has not been successful so far. Beijing has been doubling down on a self-reliance drive in tech for several years, pouring money into chip development and other sectors, including AI.

AI companies in China aim for innovation despite U.S. restrictions on access to parts

Others argue it’s too early to say the chip export controls have failed.

Gregory Allen, director of the Wadhwani AI Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said DeepSeek could have acquired all its chips before the effect of the controls started to be felt.

In a widely reported 2023 interview, DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng said the company had stockpiled some 10,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs – a variety that was put on the U.S. export control list. Experts think those may have been deployed in earlier versions of DeepSeek’s model.

After the chip blockade started, Nvidia developed a workaround, creating the slightly less powerful H800 GPU, which was legal to sell to China for a time.

“We are currently living through the era of the lagging impact of the Biden administration’s misfire in that first batch of AI export controls,” said Allen.

DeepSeek had a window in which it was able to buy H800s – before the administration eventually banned the sale of them to China, too.

“DeepSeek has discovered some architectural innovations, some algorithmic innovations that sort of increase the number of IQ points, the amount of intelligence, that a given AI model can get from a given quantity of computational resources,” he said.

But AI development requires computing power, and the number of advanced GPUs that DeepSeek, or any other Chinese company, can access is limited by the export controls, he said. That will eventually bite.

Allen says it means the U.S. has an edge: access to advanced chips without restrictions.

“We can copy China’s advantages. They cannot copy our advantages. At least not any time soon,” he said.

In terms of the hype around DeepSeek developing its near-cutting edge model on the cheap, Allen said the cost was undoubtedly far north of the reported $5.6 million. He likened it to the development of a drug.

“The cost of developing a new medication is not just the cost of the clinical trial that worked,” he said. “It’s the cost of all the clinical trials that didn’t work. And it’s the same with this AI model training run. DeepSeek has published how much it cost them for that final successful training run.”

It’s not known how much the company spent to get to that point, he said.

Hmaidi says DeepSeek is a “very legitimate triumph of Chinese engineering”. But she says it’s not yet the threat that many are making it out to be.

“I currently don’t see how you get a significantly better model with their current pipeline – without more compute,” she said.

“Personally, I don’t think it’s a threat to America’s AI prowess at this point.”

Did the rains ease Southern California’s fire threat? What we know

0

This week’s rainstorm brought some much needed moisture to Southern California without the mudslides some feared.

But did it help reduce the fire danger that fueled this month’s unprecedented firestorm?

Fire conditions

Forecasters say the amount of rainfall isn’t quite enough to keep Los Angeles’ fire season from dragging into February. It would take 2 to 4 inches of rain to comfortably consider the wildfire season over, said Ryan Kittell, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Oxnard. This storm dropped, generally, half an inch to 1.5 inches across the L.A. Basin.

“It’s not quite where we’d be comfortable to say we’d be good for the season, but certainly providing relief for the next couple weeks,” he said.

Amid the wet weather, containment grew on all of Southern California’s wildfires.

The Palisades, Eaton and Hughes fires in L.A. County were 95%, 99% and 98% contained, respectively, as of Tuesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Containment of the Border 2 fire in San Diego County was listed at 74%.

What SoCal got

Rainfall in Los Angeles County peaked in Porter Ranch, with its three-day rain total hitting 1.62 inches as of 10 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Sepulveda Canyon wasn’t far behind with 1.45 inches, and Santa Monica Pier got 1.38 inches. Some areas, however, didn’t top half an inch: Agoura Hills and Castaic saw a third of an inch; Alhambra got 0.49 of an inch.

Snowfall in the mountains accumulated to more than a foot in some of the highest elevations, including Mountain High in Wrightwood and at Arrowbear Lake. Other peaks saw 1 to 10 inches: Mt. Wilson recorded 10 inches, Frazier Park got 2 to 4 inches and Mt. Baldy got 5 to 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Here are some three-day rain totals, from the weather service:

  • Porter Ranch —1.62 inches
  • Santa Monica Pier — 1.38 inches
  • Northridge — 1.36 inches
  • Calabasas — 1.12 inches
  • Canoga Park — 1.10 inches
  • La Verne — 1.10 inches
  • Culver City — 1.06 inches
  • Chatsworth Reservoir —1.05 inches
  • Beverly Hills — 1.02 inches
  • Hansen Dam — 1.00 inches
  • Bel-Air — 0.93 of an inch
  • Hollywood Reservoir — 0.87 of an inch
  • Newhall — 0.79 of an inch
  • Claremont — 0.72 of an inch
  • San Rafael Hills — 0.72 of an inch
  • Santa Fe Dam — 0.61 of an inch
  • Eagle Rock Reservoir — 0.59 of an inch
  • Whittier — 0.59 of an inch
  • La Cañada Flintridge — 0.57 of an inch
  • Sierra Madre — 0.54 of an inch
  • Alhambra — 0.49 of an inch
  • Agoura Hills — 0.33 of an inch
  • Leo Carrillo State Beach — 0.31 of an inch
  • Castaic — 0.30 of an inch

‘Dodged a bullet’

Although the much-anticipated rainfall had many fire-weary Angelenos hopeful, forecasters had also been worried that the system would create thunderstorms or strong storm cells that would inundate the regions’ fresh burn scars, wreaking more havoc on the disaster-fatigued region. But luckily, Kittell said, the heaviest rain missed those areas.

“This was a largely beneficial rain. … I think we dodged a bullet,” he said. “It helped with the firefights and definitely gives us a break from fire weather.”

Some areas saw significant downpours, with heavy rain falling in a short amount of time, causing some minor flooding and road closures from mud and debris, especially in the Santa Monica Mountains. But the worst-case scenario didn’t play out, Kittell said.

Forecasts show the next few days relatively dry, but there are some chances for rain this weekend or next week, which could continue to ease the fire threat if it materializes, Kittell said.

There are “a few signals for one or two rain events,” he said.

UFC champ Merab Dvalishvili returns to face former titleholder Petr Yan for TUF-inspired reality show

0

Reigning UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili and former 135-pound titleholder Petr Yan will face off as opposing coaches on the next season of Hype Reality, Russia’s TUF-inspired reality show that previously featured Arman Tsarukyan and Khamzat Chimaev.

“The world is not ready yet,” wrote Internet personality Alfredo Auditore, who is sort of like Russia’s version of the Nelk Boys.

I think he meant “the world is not interested yet,” since we already saw Dvalishvili defeat Yan at UFC Las Vegas back in early 2023. In the nearly two years that followed, Dvalishvili went on to capture (and defend) the bantamweight title.

Yan rebounded with consecutive wins over Song Yadong and Deiveson Figueiredo.

No word yet on when or where Hype Reality will stream online. As of this writing, both “The Machine” and “No Mercy” remain unbooked though it’s likely Yan — dormant since last November — will be tapped first as Dvalishvili waits for this rival to recover.
