What if football players chose love instead of the game? : NPR

When the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles score touchdowns in the Super Bowl tomorrow, you might see that one of the end zones is stenciled with a message: CHOOSE LOVE. The other says, IT TAKES ALL OF US.

You may wonder: how are professional football players, who are paid gobs of money to bash, thrash, and smash each other before a vast, worldwide audience, supposed to represent choosing love?

The NFL may be aiming that sensitive message more at fans than players. But envisioning those creeds stenciled into the end zones moves me to imagine a different kind of
Super Bowl that might be played tomorrow.

Picture it: the game is about to begin when Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ vaunted quarterback, runs onto the field and shouts, “Brothers! Why are we here? To pummel, pound, and pounce on one another for so-called ‘entertainment’? To fatten the assets of team owners, shoe companies, beermakers, and sportsbook sites?”

Players stop in their cleats, to ponder his truly existential question. I imagine Saquon Barkley, the Eagles celebrated running back, stepping up.

“They call us rivals,” he cries out. “But verily, I say no! Why do we heed orders to run into each other, week after week, to win fleeting, fragile fame, when we know that only our noble brethren across the line of scrimmage truly understand and value us!”

“Brothers!” Travis Kelce, the Chief’s famed tight end, calls out. “Why do we whomp and wallop one another for mere points on a board? When, verily, as it is written in the end-zone, we should choose love!”

Chiefs then begin to call out to Eagles, “I love you, man!” The Eagles sob back to Chiefs, “You complete me!”

Patrick Mahomes opens his arms to both teams and the crowd to say, “It takes all of us!” Even Philadelphia fans in the stands embrace Kansas City fans, and don’t swipe their wallets.

The two Super Bowl teams suddenly see their highly-promoted competition as trivial stuff, compared to the great game of life. They heed the commandment in the end zone to choose love. The players then embrace at the 50-yard line, eyes brimming. And together, the Chiefs and Eagles sing:

“One Love! One Heart!
Let’s get together and feel all right.
Hear the children cryin’ (One Love!)
Hear the children cryin’ (One Heart!)
Sayin’: give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right
Sayin’: let’s get together and feel all right. Wo wo-wo wo-wo!”

California Postal Service supervisor pleads guilty to $300,000 mail theft

0

A former United States Postal Service supervisor from Compton has admitted to being a serial mail thief, pilfering more than $300,000 worth of checks, gold and collectible currency while on the job, authorities said.

Joivian Tjuana Hayes, 36, of Compton, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of theft of mail matter by a Postal Service employee and one count of unlawful transfer, possession and use of means of identification, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

From early last year until her arrest in December, Hayes — who was a supervisor at the Costa Mesa Post Office — stole checks from the mail and fraudulently deposited them in her own bank account by forging the payees’ names, according to her plea agreement. One of these checks was for more than $114,000, authorities said.

Surveillance camera video shows Hayes depositing the stolen checks at ATMs in Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and Compton, prosecutors said. She deposited some checks at ATMs while wearing a blue shirt with a USPS logo, prosecutors said.

In total, she deposited 20 checks worth around $284,000, as well as $3,000 worth of postal money orders that she also swiped from the mail, prosecutors said.

When searching her home last month, federal agents found a trove of gold coins and collectible currencies.

This included a $1 bill from 1917 with a sticky note listing an estimated value of $675, a $100 bill dating from 1914 that was valued at $1,500, and a $10 Confederate States of America bill. They also discovered a $5 gold piece with a note listing a value of $1,600, prosecutors said.

The total value of the stolen goods is estimated to be between $304,000 and $324,288.

Hayes is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on May 23. She faces up to 20 years in federal prison, prosecutors said.

This case was investigated by the United States Postal Service office of inspector general.

iOS 18.4 Beta 1 is expected in first half of February

0

iOS 18.4 will primarily focus on Siri

It now seems likely that Apple is gearing up to roll out its next beta, this time designed to offer significant improvements for its voice assistant.

Apple continues to slowly roll out Apple Intelligence, with the first features appearing in iOS 18.1. These included Writing Tools, system wide summaries, and Photos cleanup.

With this next beta, Apple will begin testing a handful of new features centered around Siri. This includes an app intent system that will let Siri have on-screen context for commands. Apple has already asked developers to begin work on the new feature in iOS 18.2.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman announced the upcoming beta on Threads on Friday:

“I expect iOS 18.4 beta 1 to be released between the middle of next week and early the following week. So it’s coming fairly soon.”

Apple is also gearing up to expand Apple Intelligence to support more languages in iOS 18.4. The update should add support for Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

There’s a good chance that we’ll see the Unicode 16 update, which is set to bring seven new emoji characters, including root vegetable, face with bags under eyes, shovel, harp, splatter, leafless tree, and fingerprint.

Apple released iOS 18.3 to the public in late January. The newest updates were centered around expanding Apple Intelligence features, including improving Visual Intelligence, addressing notification summary concerns, and enabling Apple Intelligence by default.

‘He’s too tough’ — Israel Adesanya picks winner for UFC 312 main event | Du Plessis vs. Strickland 2

0

Israel Adesanya is rolling with a familiar foe later this evening (Sat., Feb. 8, 2025) at UFC 312 LIVE on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia, as Dricus du Plessis puts his UFC middleweight title on the line for the second-straight time against former division champion Sean Strickland.

These two middleweights first met back at UFC 297 in Jan. 2024. It was a very competitive back-and-forth fight that some people thought Strickland won, but it was DDP who walked away with the split-decision victory and the 185-pound championship belt. Strickland has been holding out hope for another chance to test his skills against du Plessis and he’ll get that opportunity tonight in Sydney.

While du Plessis is a sizeable betting favorite to walk out of UFC 312 victorious and keep his middleweight strap, some believe that Strickland will make the proper adjustments to exact revenge. It could be a true toss-up main event that produces another five-round war of attrition. The official betting odds can be seen HERE.

One of the best people to ask to help predict du Plessis vs. Strickland 2 is none other than Adesanya, who is widely regarded as one of the best middleweights ever. The former UFC champion has experience competing against both fighters, losing a decision to Strickland at UFC 293 in Sept. 2023 and then getting submitted by DDP at UFC 304 in August 2024.

The former middleweight king offered up his official prediction for UFC 312’s main event earlier this week. Check it out below:

“To be honest it’s going to be Dricus doing what he does,” said Adesanya (shown above). “Strickland might wrestle better, but he’s not going to initiate it. If he [Strickland] can have his defense on point he might be able to beat Dricus. I just think Dricus is too tough right now.

“I think Dricus is going to win, but he’s going to do it the way he does it, which is just be stubborn and take him down and try to beat Strickland up. I’m going to go Dricus.”

MIDDLEWEIGHT REMATCH! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues its 2025 pay-per-view (PPV) schedule on Sat., Feb. 8, with a rematch between 185-pound kingpin, Dricus du Plessis, running it back against the man he lifted the belt off little more than one year ago, Sean Strickland, in the five-round main event. In UFC 312’s championship co-headliner from inside Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, women’s Strawweight roost-ruler, Zhang Weili, will defend her belt against undefeated (and oft-injured) 115-pound contender, Tatiana Suarez. UFC 312 will also feature a hard-hitting Heavyweight battle between Justin Tafa vs. Talisson Teixeira, alongside a Light Heavyweight showdown with Jimmy Crute facing Rodolfo Bellato, and so much more! UFC 312’s start time is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET (“Prelims” undercard) and 10 p.m. ET (PPV main card).

‘Nosferatu’ Director Robert Eggers Says ‘Werewulf’ Is “Darkest Thing I’ve Written”

0

Robert Eggers

ended 2024 with a bang with his remake of the classic silent horror film Nosferatu. The movie, which Eggers wrote and directed, was a long-time passion project for the creative. The development of the film went all the way back to 2015, shortly after the release of the director’s debut film, The Witch, at the Sundance Film Festival that year. Now, nearly a decade later, Eggers has finally completed the project, with Nosferatu receiving critical acclaim and even an Academy Award nomination. Now, the director has already begun the early stages of development for his next project, tentatively titled Werewulf.

While taking questions at a panel, Eggers briefly touched upon his next film, which was given a December 2026 release date in keeping with the holiday horror tradition that started with Nosferatu. All the director had to say about the movie was, “It’s a medieval werewolf movie. It’s also the darkest thing I’ve ever written by far.” Just this tiny detail alone is enough to get fans excited, especially those deeply familiar with his work.

Eggers has a small but impressive filmography, having directed The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, each receiving rave reviews, praised for their historical accuracy and extreme attention to detail in the production design and various dialects. Moreover, these films have had incredibly dark moments, making Eggers’ comments about Werewulf being his darkest work yet feel like an exciting and terrifying promise.

‘Werewulf’ Has the Potential to be Robert Eggers’ Best Work Yet

The Medieval setting mentioned in Eggers brief comment also gives fans of the filmmaker a new period and setting to look forward to. Whether it was the 1630s New England setting of The Witch, or the 1890s backdrop of The Lighthouse, each new Eggers film has felt like a time capsule that perfectly encapsulates bygone eras and traditions while somehow still making them thematically relevant to modern-day audiences. The 13th-century setting of Werewulf will be entirely new territory for the horror director; placing the iconic horror creature in a medieval setting will undoubtedly lead to some intense bloodshed.

Hugh Jackman’s Dark Robin Hood Movie Adds ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘A Quiet Place’ Stars

Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe join the production from A24.

The upcoming horror movie will be released only two years after Leigh Whannell’s take on the classic Universal Monster, which recently hit digital retailers following a somewhat disappointing (and still ongoing) box-office run. Whannell’s modern sensibilities resulted in a film that had mixed reviews, which makes one curious as to how Eggers take on the lycanthrope will be received by audiences come holiday 2026.

Whatever the case, it’s exciting to see so many horror icons reimagined by talented modern-day filmmakers. Besides Whannell’s Wolf Man and Eggers’ upcoming Werewulf, James Wan was announced early last year to tackle a remake of Universal’s Creature From the Black Lagoon. Although there have been no announcements since then, there is still hope that the project will move forward. For now, we can look forward to Eggers’ interpretation of the werewolf, which will more likely than not be scarily accurate to the myths of the creature that originated from that period while also being his darkest film yet.

Netflix’s Upcoming The Thursday Murder Club Movie Is Reuniting 8 Actors Who All Appeared In The Same TV Show

0

The Thursday Murder Club is one of Netflix’s most anticipated upcoming projects, based on the hugely popular crime novel by Richard Osman. The story follows a group of elderly friends who regularly meet up to discuss unsolved cases, but their hobby quickly turns dangerous when the police require their crime-solving talents for an ongoing investigation. The film has an all-star cast including names such as Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and David Tennant, making The Thursday Murder Club one of Netflix’s most exciting upcoming movies.

Despite the well-written story and the scenic filming locations, the most exciting part of The Thursday Murder Club is undoubtedly its cast. The film will bring together some of the most well-known and acclaimed talents of their generation, celebrating older actors in a way that crime movies rarely do. This is part of the reason that Osman’s book works so effectively; it’s not common for older characters to lead this kind of high-octane story, but they bring such charm to the narrative.

The Thursday Murder Club Cast Has 8 Actors Who Appeared In Doctor Who

Including One Actor Who Played The Title Role

Doctor Who is one of the longest-running shows in British television history, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to learn that eight of The Thursday Murder Club’s cast members have made appearances on the sci-fi drama throughout the years. While David Tennant is the most obvious, having played the title role between 2005 and 2010, there are certain cameos among the cast that may have gone unnoticed. Richard E Grant, for example, has worked on Doctor Who several times, most notably as the Great Intelligence from the rebooted show’s seventh season.

Chappell Roan responds to writer who criticized her Grammy speech

0

Chappell Roan challenged the author of an op-ed critical of her speech at the Grammy Awards to match her in donating $25,000 to “struggling dropped artists.”

In a series of posts on her Instagram story early Friday, the pop singer — who after being named best new artist at Sunday’s ceremony called on record labels to provide up-and-coming musicians with “a livable wage and health care” — tagged Jeff Rabhan in a screenshot of the piece he wrote this week for the Hollywood Reporter in which he described Roan, 26, as “far too green and too uninformed to be the agent of change she aspires to be today.”

Rabhan, former chair of New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, went on to say that Roan had a naive understanding of the record industry’s workings — “There is no moral or ethical obligation by any standard that hold labels responsible for the allocation of additional funds beyond advances and royalties,” he wrote — before urging her to “do something about it — rather than just talk at it.”

On Instagram, Roan wrote, “Mr. Rabhan I love how in the article you said ‘put your money where your mouth is’ Genius !!! Let’s link and build together and see if you can do the same.” She added that she’d “show receipts of the donations” then shouted out a handful of artists “that deserve more love and a bigger platform”: Hemlocke Springs, Sarah Kinsley, Devon Again and Baby Storme.

Years before Roan broke out in 2024, she was signed as a teenager and later dropped by Atlantic Records, a journey she recounted in her Grammy speech.

“I had zero job experience under my belt, and like most people I had a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic and could not afford health insurance,” she said to applause from fellow artists including Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Benson Boone. “It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanized to not have health [insurance]. And if my label would’ve prioritized artists’ health, I could’ve been provided care by a company I was giving everything to.

“So, record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection,” she said.

In his op-ed, Rabhan asked, “If labels are responsible for artists’ wages, health care and overall well-being, where does it end and personal responsibility begin?” He added: “Demanding that labels pay artists like salaried employees ignores the fundamental economic structure of the business.”

Here’s Where Oscars Music Races Stand

0

“El Mal” from Emilia Pérez won best original song at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards, which were held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., on Friday (Feb. 7).

The song, co-written by Clément Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard, the film’s writer, director and co-producer, also won the Golden Globe Award in that category on Jan. 5.

With these two wins, “El Mal” appears to be the front-runner in the race for best original song at the Oscars. The other Oscar nominees in that category are “El Camino,” also from Emilia Pérez; “Never Too Late” from Elton John: Never Too Late; “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight; and “Like a Bird” from Sing Song. The latter three songs were not nominated at the Critics Choice Awards.

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross’ acclaimed score for Challengers won the Critics Choice Award for best original score, just as it won at the Golden Globes. But it cannot win the Oscar as it wasn’t even nominated. It’s just the third film score to win both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award and not even be nominated at the Oscars. The first two were Howard Shore’s score for The Aviator at the 2005 ceremony and Justin Hurwitz’s score for First Man in 2019. (Shore, Hurwitz and Reznor & Ross had all won best original score at the Oscars with previous films, making these shut-outs hard to understand.)

The other best original score nominees at the Oscars are Volker Bertelmann for Conclave, Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist, Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot and John Powell & Stephen Schwartz for Wicked.

Emilia Pérez also won the Critics Choice Award for foreign language film. Zoe Saldaña, who sang “El Mal” in Emilia Pérez (with an assist from Karla Sofia Gascón), won the award for best supporting actress.

Accepting the Critics Choice Award for best original song, Camille said “This gives us such a sense of belonging. It feels so grounding. You know this awards season sometimes is so hectic, so overwhelming. I feel like saying sometimes [sings] ‘I’m just a bird.’ Thank you so much to Jacques Audiard to allow the bird in me and us to write. Thanks to the Emilia Pérez team and to Zoe, of course, for being such a great artist.”

Ducol, Camille’s romantic partner and collaborator, spoke warmly about Los Angeles in accepting the award. “We’ve been making L.A. our home over the past few months with our family and fell in love with the city and its people. We were so warmly welcomed by the community here and made lasting friendships. Of course, we were heartbroken by the fires and destruction. Now I know why I dreamed of becoming a firefighter when I was young.”

Last year’s Critics Choice Award winners in the music categories were Ludwig Göransson’s Oppenheimer for best original score (which went on to win the Oscar) and “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie for best original song (which was Oscar-nominated, but lost to fellow Barbie song “What Was I Made For?”)

Chelsea Handler hosted the Critics Choice Awards for the third year in a row. The show was originally set for Sunday, Jan. 12, but was postponed to Sunday, Jan. 26, and then postponed again, because of wind-whipped wildfires in Los Angeles that began on Jan. 7. The three-hour show, which included awards for both film and television, aired at 7 p.m. ET/PT on E!. The show will also be available to stream the next day on Peacock.

Final-round Oscar voting extends from Feb. 11-18. The 97th Oscars, hosted for the first time by Conan O’Brien, will be held on Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The show will air live coast-to-coast at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC and streamed live on Hulu for the first time.

Here’s a complete list of nominees in film categories at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, with winners marked. Below are nominees in the two music categories, with winners marked:
