Threads now lets you scribble on top of other users’ posts

0

Threads is adding a new feature that lets users get a little more creative in remixing posts from other people. The app now has a “markup” tool that allows users to scribble on top of posts they want to reshare, Adam Mosseri shared in .

Markup abilities appear in the menu for quoting and reposting. But instead of simply quoting a post, it launches an editing tool where you can add highlights, arrows or doodles on top of a screenshot of the post. Mosseri said the feature is intended “so you can add your creative take” on posts, but the tools are fairly limited for now. You can only add yellow highlights or red arrows and doodles, though Mosseri said there would be “more to come soon” from Meta.

A Threads spokesperson confirms that the feature will function similarly to quote posts in that the original user is notified if someone chooses to mark up their post. You can also use the “who can reply and quote” setting to disable markups on your own posts.

The app is also making two other features it’s already previewed official: and . The features will likely be particularly useful for brands, creators and others who manage a professional presence on the site, which has so far lacked many of the more advanced business-focused tools Meta’s other platforms have. Both could also come in handy should Meta begin to to Threads, a move that’s reportedly in the works for the beginning of 2025.

The Apprentice film debuted at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and sent shockwaves through viewers with its portrayal of Donald Trump, now once again serving as President. Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of a young Trump even sparked a response from the former host of the reality TV series.

Now, with Stan’s Academy Award nomination, the controversial movie is expected to gain even more attention. Hollywood Life has rounded up everything you need to know about the film here. Read on to find out more.

What Is ‘The Apprentice’ About?

Per its official logline, The Apprentice “is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire. It charts a young Donald Trump’s ascent to power through a Faustian deal with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn.”

The movie also claims to be inspired by “true events” from Trump’s life and career so far.

After it premiered at Cannes, viewers revealed that a graphic rape scene is featured in the film between Trump and his ex-wife Ivana Trump. Per Variety, the scene begins with Ivan (portrayed by actress Maria Bakalova) playfully showing a book about female orgasms to her husband. The interaction between them quickly takes a sharp turn, and the character Trump reveals he doesn’t want her anymore. After they argue, Trump rapes her.

‘The Apprentice’ Release Date

The Apprentice premiered on October 11.

How to Watch ‘The Apprentice’

The Apprentice is currently available to rent or buy on streaming services like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and YouTube TV.

How Did Donald Trump Respond to the Movie?

Upon hearing about the film’s portrayal of him, Trump and his campaign responded by calling it “garbage.” Per a statement by campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, they plan to file a lawsuit “to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers.”

“This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked,” the spokesperson added, according to the Associated Press.

Director Ali Abbasi spoke to reporters at Cannes, noting, “I don’t necessarily think that this is a movie he would dislike. I don’t necessarily think he would like it. I think he would be surprised, you know? And like I’ve said before, I would offer to go and meet him wherever he wants and talk about the context of the movie, have a screening and have a chat afterwards, if that’s interesting to anyone at the Trump campaign.”

Trump later broke his silence about the movie in a Truth Social post, calling it “fake and classless.”

In response to Trump’s statement, Abbasi tweeted, “Thanks for getting back to us @realDonaldTrump. I am available to talk further if you want. Today is a tight day w a lot of press for #TheApprentice but i might be able to give you a call tomorrow [sic].”

The little-known UK island with tragic history that’s become a dark tourism spot | Travel News | Travel

0

This tiny part of the UK has a little-known yet tragic history, and it’s become a point of interest for Brits wanting to learn about a disaster that killed dozens of people.

Canvey Island in Essex is made up of land reclaimed from the Thames Estuary and lies just above sea level.

On January 31, 1953, a massive storm hit the North Sea, causing a tidal surge that burst through the sea wall surrounding Canvey.

Today, a large sea wall protects the island but memories of the floods are found everywhere in the area.

Tourists visiting the area today often explore the memorials and history of the tragedy and it has become a destination for dark tourism.

From street names including Dyke Crescent and Deepwater Road to the King Canute Pub, reminders of Canvey’s historical relationship with the sea can be found around every corner.

During the storm, flood water poured into the island, trapping residents in their homes.

People climbed onto the roofs for safety, where some died due to shock and hypothermia, others drowned in the rising waters.

A total of 59 people lost their lives and 13,000 were evacuated in the tragedy.

The sea wall, previously made from little more than earth and grass, has been replaced by solid flood barriers.

Today, Canvey Island is a haven for birds and rare insects alongside a memorial to the flood victims.

It is known for its pretty coastal walks, peaceful atmosphere and rich history.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “I didn’t realise Canvey Island had such a lovely sea wall stroll.

“We had stopped on Canvey Island for a visit and decided to head to the sea for a look and found the sea wall walk. It is so lovely, super clean, really relaxing and I loved reading all the murals as I walked.”

Another wrote: “We spent the day here, we were pleasantly surprised at how close to London it was (45 mins), lovely beach, little shop and amusements, so inexpensive and the little one had so much fun crab fishing and at the little funfair.

“Food was lovely and we couldn’t believe how inexpensive everything is. Will definitely be back soon!! Roadside parking was free too!”

Who Is Leonard Peltier? ‘Incident at Oglala’ Has What You Need To Know

0

On January 19, 2025, former U.S. President Joe Biden commuted the prison sentence of Leonard Peltier, allowing the Native American activist to spend the rest of his days at home. The subject of the unanimously praised 1992 documentary Incident at Oglala, Peltier was convicted of murdering two FBI agents in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Claiming innocence since his arrest, Peltier will serve the remainder of his life sentence under house arrest.

Narrated by screen legend Robert Redford, Incident at Oglala is one of the most important American documentary films released in the past three decades. The film has an unblemished 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, ranking with The Thin Blue Line as a sobering account of the American justice system. Now that Peltier is set to return home on February 18, 2025, his story deserves more attention.

Who Is Leonard Peltier?

An AIM sign is displayed in Incident at Oglala
Miramax Films

Leonard Peltier is an 80-year-old Native American who joined the American Indian Movement (AIM) in 1972 to advocate and raise awareness for equal rights for the indigenous population. Peltier partly joined AIM after learning about the turmoil in South Daktoa’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where a division was sowed among its various constituents. Some reservation members supported the elected chair, Richard Wilson, while others clung to long-held Lakota tribe customs.

In 1975, Peltier joined an envoy of AIM activists to eliminate racial discrimination and political persecution and curb the widespread violence plaguing Pine Ridge. On June 26, 1975, a massive shootout occurred at Pine Ridge, resulting in the death of FBI agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams, and Native American AIM member Joe Stuntz. When the smoke cleared, three men were arrested for the fatal shootings, including Robert Robideau, Dino Butler, and Leonard Peltier. The case was the subject of Incident at Oglala, a social justice documentary still relevant today.

Although Butler and Robideau were acquitted during their murder trial, Peltier was tried separately after being extradited from Canada. Due to his past legal troubles, Peltier was a wanted fugitive before visiting Pine Ridge, charged with evading police after being accused of attempting to kill an off-duty Milwaukee police officer. Despite maintaining his innocence and providing multiple alibis, Peltier was named on the FBI’s Most Wanted List in December 1975 and was arrested for murdering FBI agents Coler and Williams on February 6, 1976. In April 1977, Peltier was convicted of murder and given two consecutive life sentences.

‘Incident at Oglala’s Engaging Subject

A man stands in profile in Incident at Oglala
Miramax Films

Directed to great acclaim by Michael Apted, Incident at Oglala closely examines what transpired at Pine Ridge on June 26, 1975. Robert Redford narrates the legal case, providing the contextual violence plaguing Pine Ridge before the deadly shootout. At Pine Ridge, the division between traditional Lakota tribe members and younger, Americanized Dakota natives resulted in multiple drive-by shootings. To prevent such, AIM was asked to visit Pine Ridge to espouse traditional customs.

Best Robert Redford Movies, Ranked

Robert Redford is an iconic Hollywood actor, director, producer, and the founder of the Sundance Film Festival. Here are his best movies, ranked.

The title Incident at Oglala refers to the shootout in Lakota territory at Pine Ridge, presided over by tribal chair Richard Wilson. Oglala also held AIM’s headquarters at Calvin Jumping Bull’s property. The incident was sparked by a pair of stolen boots by teenage AIM member, Jimmy Eagle, prompting an FBI investigation. When agents Coler and Williams approached Eagle to discuss the stolen boots, they followed a vehicle they believed to be entering the AIM settlement, and a brutal shootout ensued. Coler and Williams were shot dead, as was AIM member Joe Stuntz.

With a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Incident at Oglala traces the legal trial Peltier withstood following the deadly shootout at Pine Ridge. Narrated by Robert Redford, who has advocated Peltier’s innocence since 1980, helped to absolve Peltier’s legal guilt and prove he was framed and persecuted for being a native. While the documentary helped raise awareness about Peltier’s wrongful conviction, he was denied parole in 1993.

Peltier’s Journey to Clemency & Commutation

Val Kilmer appears in Incident at Oglala
Miramax Films

After being denied parole in 1993, Peltier spent the next 31 years in prison. In 1999, he wrote a memoir titled Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sun Dance, in which he admitted that, while he was involved in the shootout at Pine Ridge, he did not kill FBI agents Coler and Williams. Evidence pointing to Peltier’s guilt included possessing Coler’s handgun, which, along with a thumbprint, was left in an RV that Peltier evaded from police on foot.

With conflicting evidence throughout the trial and a 1979 prison escape, proving Peltier’s innocence has not been easy. However, 25 years after penning his memoir and nearly 50 years since his arrest, Peltier’s prison sentence was officially commuted by 46th U.S. President, Joe Biden. The commuted sentence allows Peltier to serve the remainder of his consecutive life sentences from home under house arrest.

Peltier’s commutation comes after filing for clemency in 2023, one of many legal attempts to absolve his guilt. At one point, President Bill Clinton considered commuting Peltier’s sentence. After being denied parole again in July 2024, President Biden commuted Peltier’s prison sentence on his final day in office. Peltier is expected to return to his Turtle Mountain Band tribe and live in a home on their reservation in North Dakota.

For fans of documentaries that make a real difference in daily life, Incident at Oglala joins Errol Morris’ The Thin Blue Line as a powerful film that can change public perceptions and result in true justice.

Incident at Oglala is available to rent on AppleTV & Amazon Prime Video

The Night Agent Could Follow A Different Character In The Future, Tease Star & Creator

0

Netflix’s The Night Agent could take a bold new direction in future seasons, according to creator Shawn Ryan and star Gabriel Basso. The series follows Peter Sutherland (Basso), a low-level FBI agent thrown into a high-stakes conspiracy after answering an emergency line call. The show’s intense action and storyline made it a breakout hit, banking 812 million hours watched in early 2023, solidifying it as one of the streamer’s standout titles. While Basso remains at the center of the action, currently filming The Night Agent season 3, a new night agent could exist in the future.

In a recent interview with Variety, Ryan and Basso talked about the possibility of bringing in a new night agent, since Basso has been open about possibly retiring in the near future. While Basso is working hard on the next season, Ryan recognized that the series does not need to revolve around the same character forever. In his own words:

The show is called ‘The Night Agent.’ It’s not called ‘The Gabriel Basso Show.’ So there may be a time when he decides he wants to do something else, and there’s a different night agent.

Additionally, Basso said that he would be taking a break after The Night Agent season 3, and revealed that he already has a strategy for how the character could be written out. Check out his comments below:

I’m probably going to take a break. […] I think Peter’s making decisions that have to happen. And it would be doing the audience a disservice if, every season, he was fine. At some point, the audience would be like, I get it now. No one wants to see someone who’s untouchable.

What This Means For The Future Of The Night Agent

Exploring New Stories

The possibility of The Night Agent following a different protagonist creates exciting opportunities for the future of the show. Although the first season was based on Matthew Quirk’s novel of the same name, The Night Agent season 2 was creatively reined in by Ryan and his team. By introducing other agents, the series could explore fresh perspectives and new missions in the world of night agents. It could explore past agents, like Rose’s aunt and uncle. On the other hand, it could introduce brand-new characters, like the agent filling in Peter’s spot, or perhaps even the very first night agent.

Whether it is through new characters or exploring the origins of the Night Action missions, the show now has the potential to shift into an anthology-like format while staying true to its roots.

This change would not only maintain the show’s core premise, but it would also inject new life into the plot, preventing it from becoming predictable or repetitive. Additionally, the series’ flexibility towards lead characters could pave the way for new dynamics and relationships. While Peter’s already been through difficult challenges, a new lead could bring a different set of skills, motivations and stakes to the table. Whether it is through new characters or exploring the origins of the Night Action missions, the show now has the potential to shift into an anthology-like format while staying true to its roots.

Our Take On The Night Agent’s Future

A New Direction That Could Be Succesful

The Night Agent has proven to be a success, and its potential shift away from Peter Sutherland could make or break the show. While Basso has delivered a fan-favorite performance as Peter, the idea of exploring different agents and missions could keep the series fresh and engaging. It also highlights how much Ryan and Basso prioritize the quality of the story over sticking to a formula. The willingness to change proven successful formulas points to plenty more thrilling stories to come.

Whether or not Peter’s story comes to an end in the next season, the future of The Night Agent looks bright. By not being afraid of change and embracing new possibilities, the show has the potential to remain a standout in the overcrowded world of crime dramas. For now, fans can look forward to more of Peter Sutherland’s thrilling mission in The Night Agent season 2, all ten episodes now streaming on Netflix.

Billy Ray Cyrus’ ‘worried’ son Trace asks singer to get help

0

Trace Cyrus, as a child, wanted to be just like dad Billy Ray Cyrus growing up. Nowadays, he says, he can “barely recognize” his father as someone he once thought was “the coolest person ever.”

The younger Cyrus, whose sisters are pop stars Miley Cyrus and Noah Cyrus, expressed his complex emotions about the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Wednesday on Instagram. The emotional open letter said he and his sisters “have been genuinely worried about” their father for years and claimed “you’ve pushed all of us away.”

Billy Ray Cyrus shares five children with ex-wife Tish Cyrus-Purcell: adoptive kids Trace and Brandi (whom Tish welcomed with her first husband, Baxter Neal Helson), plus Miley, Braison and Noah. He is also the father of Christopher Cody Cyrus, whom he welcomed with ex-girlfriend Kristin Luckey in 1992. Billy Ray and Tish were married from 1993 to 2022.

Trace Cyrus, 35, claimed Wednesday that his 63-year-old dad has not been present for Noah (“She deserves better”) and that his loved ones have been “hanging onto memories” and holding out hope that “the man we once knew” would return.

“You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it,” Trace Cyrus continued.

He added: “I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon.”

Beyond airing out his and his family’s grievances, Trace Cyrus seemingly offered a helping hand to his estranged father who he suspects is going through his own personal issues.

“I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help,” wrote Trace, who said he has been alcohol-free for more than a year.

Representatives for Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus and Noah Cyrus did not respond immediately to The Times’ request for comment.

Trace Cyrus shared his statement days after his father performed at President Trump’s Liberty Ball on Monday. The elder Cyrus kicked off his Inauguration Day set shakily singing along to both his verse and rapper Lil Nas X’s part on their 2019 hit “Old Town Road,” though his vocals were noticeably drowned out by the music video that played in its entirety in the background. At one point he had paused — then restarted — his singing to sync with the video.

“I think y’all was just getting warmed up, to be honest,” he told attendees, before performing the “Old Town Road” chorus on repeat for just short of 30 seconds.

He admitted: “They told me to kill as much time as possible.”

Billy Ray Cyrus, after addressing several technical difficulties, concluded his set by singing a minute-long portion of “Achy Breaky Heart,” a nearly 3½-minute song, a capella. On Instagram, he dubbed the final part of his performance “the most fun part” of the Monday ball.

The Traitors Season 3, Episode 5 Recap

0

Is anybody else still sweating from last week’s episode of The Traitors? Boston Rob effortlessly taking down Bob the Drag Queen will go down in reality TV history, but boy did it catch us off guard. We’ve barely recovered from it, and this week, it’s clear that the players haven’t either.

In The Traitors Season 3, Episode 5 “All This Murderous Power,” we watch how Boston Rob’s gambit slowly started biting him in the ass. His fellow Traitors don’t trust him, and the Faithfuls have become suspicious. Is time running out for the Survivor legend in this game? Let’s get into the details of what went down this week.

What happened on The Traitors Season 3, Episode 5?

After Bob the Drag Queen’s elimination, the surviving Traitors tried to get back on the same page. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Meanwhile, the Faithfuls continued to let last week’s coffin shortlist muddy their search for Traitors. By the end of the episode, we saw two more Faithfuls get booted from the competition.

Boston Rob has some explaining to do

Episode 5 picked up with the three remaining Traitors in their turret. Obviously, the energy was a little awkward because Boston Rob still had Bob the Drag Queen’s blood on his hands from the roundtable.

In an attempt to get back in good favor with Carolyn and Danielle, he tried to explain why he had to go after Bob. The three of them agreed to move past it and vowed to communicate more effectively. But, this is reality TV, and effective communication isn’t the name of the game.

In a confessional, Carolyn admitted that she felt like she couldn’t trust Boston Rob after what he did. If he was willing to throw Bob under the bus, how does she know she’s not next? You’d think Danielle would feel the same way since after all, she called Bob her “ride or die.” Strangely, that wasn’t the case.

In Danielle’s mind, it’s Carolyn who is the bigger threat to her endgame because she could have a Survivor alliance with Rob. Therefore, she explained in a confessional that from this point forward, she’s throwing Carolyn “under the bus.” She wants to get Carolyn eliminated, bring in a new Traitor, and then use them to take down Rob. Unfortunately for Big Brother fans, this is just one of fifteen times in this episode where you have to ask yourself, “What is this woman thinking?”

Who did the Traitors murder in Episode 5?

Although the Traitors were in complete disarray, they did come together to kill yet another Bravo star. The next day at breakfast, the players learned that Robyn, The Real Housewives of Potomac’s Green-Eyed Bandit, was murdered in the middle of the night.

“She’s my friend,” Dolores lamented, realizing that she was now the last Housewife standing.

In a flashback to the turret, we see that killing Robyn was mainly Boston Rob’s idea. Carolyn wasn’t down for it, but once again, no one wanted to listen to her. We’re eagerly waiting for Carolyn to find her voice in this game because right now, she only has one in her confessionals.

In an exit interview, Robyn theorized that the Traitors killed her because she was a “threat” to their game. That’s a pretty interesting assumption from someone who voted incorrectly at every single round table. Bless her heart.

One thing that Robyn said that we do agree with is that the Traitors are going to have to work twice as hard now that Bob is out of the picture. Plus, Bob put a huge target on Rob’s bag on the way out the door. It’s not going to be easy for any of them to make it to the end.

“The Traitors are sweating bullets,” Robyn accurately predicted.

Riddles, urns, and questionable strategies

Alan Cumming and his dog for The Traitors Season 3

For this week’s mission, Alan brought the players into a chapel filled with golden urns and candles. We were just a little distracted by Alan’s headpiece, and in a break from the physical challenges, this week’s mission was purely a mind game.

Alan would recite a riddle, and one player would have to find the answer to the riddle among a bookshelf full of urns. If they break the urn and find golden ashes, that adds money to the prize pot. If they see grey dust that looks like cremation remains, that means they answered wrong and are out of the game.

Of course, there was a twist. With only two shields up for grabs, the winner of each round would get to select someone to get the shield. If you’re playing for immunity, that meant that the last couple of riddles in this game were the only ones that really mattered.

This is where Danielle went completely off the rails. A good Faithful would try to give themselves a shield to get protection from murder. Instead, Danielle got up there and gave Dolores the shield, claiming that she didn’t want to see another murdered Housewife.

Now, if there’s anyone who would be on board for saving the Housewives in this game, it’s your friends at Reality Tea. However, this excuse made absolutely no sense. Rob and Carolyn were in the corner like, “What the hell is she doing?”

Danielle solved a second riddle and had the chance to redeem herself. This lady turned around and did it again! She had two chances to give herself a shield, and she didn’t take either of them. Red flags aplenty with that move.

Then, to make matters worse, Danielle tried to pull the same move that Rob did last week. After the mission, she got in the car and almost immediately began gunning for Carolyn. She straight-up said her name to a car full of people, setting the stage for an all-out war between the Traitors.

A crack in the Bambi alliance

Chrishell Stause on The Traitors Season 3

While the Traitors’ alliance slowly imploded, so did the Bambis. We were rooting for them, so this was truly a bummer of a storyline to follow this week. From the moment they entered the game, Chrishell, Gabby, and Nikki had forged a friendship, but the game finally caught up to them.

After surviving the coffin last week, most players were suspicious of Nikki. Gabby made it clear that she didn’t care if Nikki was a Traitor. She said she had a double standard for her friend. Chrishell on the other hand? Well, she didn’t feel the same way.

In a stunning move, she went behind her alliance’s back and told Boston Rob that she finally felt convinced that Nikki was a Traitor. You know Rob was jumping for joy on the inside while playing it cool in Chrishell’s face.

According to Chrishell, it all came down to a facial expression that Nikki made. Thank goodness Chrishell sells houses and doesn’t solve crimes for a living because she couldn’t be more wrong here. Either way, she put the final nail in Nikki’s coffin later that night at the roundtable.

Who got banished at the end of Episode 5?

Nikki Garcia on The Traitors Season 3

This week’s roundtable kicked off with Lord Ivar setting the stage. He established that there were three people up for debate: Ciara, Nikki, and Boston Rob. Bravely, Ivar confronted Rob about how strongly he came for Bob the week prior. How was Rob so confident that Bob was a Traitor?

Bob from The Biggest Loser jumped in and tried to help Ivar make his case, but Rob deflected. Fortunately for Rob, the misguided theory about the coffin kept everyone focused on Nikki and Ciara. The two ladies went head to head, desperately trying to prove their allegiance to the Faithfuls.

That’s when Chrishell entered the conversation. All of a sudden, we were reminded that this woman was a soap actress long before she was a reality star. Through “tears,” she explained how Nikki’s shift in energy led her to the conclusion that she was a Traitor. Dramatic music thundered in the background, really amping up the theatrics.

With the Bambi alliance fully shattered, Nikki didn’t have much fight left in her. The votes rolled in, and she became the latest player banished from the game. It wasn’t close. Nikki voted for “Ceara” while Dylan randomly voted for Gabby.

With the votes tallied, Nikki went to the Circle of Truth and shared the news that everyone at home already knew. She was a Faithful after all, and the Bambis betrayed each other for no reason. Cue a few more of those soap opera tears.

New episodes of The Traitors stream every Thursday at 9/8c on Peacock.

TELL US – WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE TRAITORS SEASON 3, EPISODE 5? DO YOU THINK THE TRAITORS WILL JEOPARDIZE THEIR GAME BY GOING AFTER EACH OTHER? WERE YOU SAD TO SEE NIKKI AND ROBYN LEAVE THE GAME THIS WEEK? WHO DO YOU THINK IS NEXT?

‘Southern Hospitality’ Newbies Lake Rucker & Michols Peña Break Down That Birthday Party Meltdown

0

The Republic crew’s group trip to the lake continued on Thursday’s (January 23) new episode of Southern Hospitality, and, despite the party ostensibly being all about newcomer Lake Rucker, things took a very dramatic turn when everyone’s attention turned to Emmy Sharrett again.

After a surprise drop-in by Lake’s father and little brother, who wanted to wish her a happy day and make sure they weren’t destroying his ex-wife’s lake house, the group settled down to the dinner table for a few dangerously undercooked chicken wings and some tough talk.

Michols, who is friends with Emmy outside of the bar, seemed to spearhead the conversation with her to break down what people had been hearing about her boyfriend Will Kulp and the unkind things he said about her. Emmy was defensive right away, arguing that it shouldn’t be discussed in a group setting or when Will isn’t around to defend himself, and it didn’t take her long to remove herself from the situation in dramatic fashion, tearfully calling Will and getting a ride home.

So why did Michols pick that moment to talk to Emmy? And how does Lake feel about her birthday party turning into a drama-fest? TV Insider caught up with both of them to find out.

How did you come to be a part of this show, and how long have your relationships with the other cast members been going on?

Lake Rucker: I was friends with Michols before. We met through mutual friends, and I went to College of Charleston — he’s still at College of Charleston — and we became close very, very quick. And then I was introduced to the group, started working at Republic, and then we all just kind of clicked very off the bat.

Michols Peña: For me, working in nightlife, you kind of know everybody that works at the other clubs. So I was already working at different venues for maybe three years and kind of just looking for change. I ended up landing a spot at Republic and then shortly later they approached me with the show. And I became — I mean, I was already really good friends with everybody before I was working there, but our friendships only got stronger right after.

Michols, Emmy credited you with being the one that brought her back together with Maddi because you were their mutual friend. Can you talk about how all that happened?

Michols: So when I first came to Republic, Maddi was getting out of her relationship with Trevor. They’d just wrapped filming of Season 2. Emmy and Maddi were feuding a little bit, so I was just trying to find my way to learn how to be the peacemaker between all the drama, and I don’t know. I was really good friends with Maddi. I was really good friends with Emmy, and any opportunity I had to bring them together, I kind of forced them to be in the same room. Anytime we had a photo shoot for Republic or was doing something work-related or maybe if it was outside of work with Brad and TJ and Joe, I just always kind of forced them to be near each other, and then one day it just kind of ended up crashing down and they just became friends again.

At the start of the season, both of you had kind of built-in romantic connections. Can you talk about what we’re going to see next from you with Bradley and TJ, respectively?

Lake: I mean, you’ll expect a lot of fun from both sides, honestly. Brad is a good person. I’m a good person, and we’re both equally good people.

Michols: I would probably say where TJ and I left things at the nail salon is kind of the farthest things go. I feel like as the season goes on, you just get to see our friendship just build up and just become stronger. But yeah, we’re definitely in a way better place.

Michols, you’re now a part of this show and Southern Charm‘s representation of the LGBTQ community in Charleston. How does it feel to be a part of that?

Michols: For me, I don’t know because I’m so new to everything. My biggest thing is just trying to stay authentic to myself. Just, it’s a wild ride. I’m just trying to educate myself, learn new things every day, just being able to talk to people from GLAAD or I spoke to someone from Parade the other day. It’s just been nice to have conversations with other members of the LGBTQ+ community and get good feedback from those who watch the show and that resonate with my story. But yeah, I think that my biggest thing is I’m just trying to learn how to stay grounded and be authentically me and tell my story and hope that it helps people.

Lake, in Episode 4, we get a good glimpse of your blended family…  What was it like for you to have your dad and even your mom and your little brother on the show?

Lake: For my mom, I feel like it was definitely a learning experience. Both of my parents are very supportive of everything I do for the most part, and they just want me to be happy.

And it was definitely like some trial and error, some questions being asked. My dad was like, “Why are you doing a TV show?” He’s very loud as you could see. He’s a very loud, strict man. And I feel like, he is a part of who I am now, and they want to be supportive of who I am. And so they’re just taking it step by step just like how I am. It’s kind of like them seeing their baby on TV, they’re like, “Oh my gosh.” I enjoyed watching King on TV, too. He’s super cute, and he just was eating his cookie in the background, so that’s what I was paying attention to.

Obviously later in the episode, things get a bit chaotic when you guys turn the subject to Emmy. I wanted to know how it came about because you seemed like you were a little frustrated that that was even happening at your birthday dinner.

Lake: Well, yes, I was kind of frustrated. I think we were just all drinking — well, I was drinking all day. It was a lot going on at once, and it was my birthday. And so I was hoping that it would be about me and not about a crash out. But things happen and I deal with it.

Were you glad that she left?

Lake: Honestly, I wasn’t mad. I was a little bit like, “Okay, that’s disrespectful. I invite you to my home, and you would expect some hospitality coming from people that have a show named Hospitality after them”… but there was no hospitality to be shown at my house. I was annoyed. I’m not even gonna lie, I was annoyed because it was just disrespectful, but that’s just me.

Michols, were you the one who brought it up? Because I know you were the one she trusted most of the group. And if so, why did you think you wanted to do it then?

Michols: So for me, as you can see, Emmy and I are best friends as the summer goes on, and it’s already hard enough to manage somebody that you’re best friends with and also be their best friend at work outside of work. It kind of puts you in a tricky situation. So I knew this conversation was never going to be anything easy, but I never thought the day would come where I would have to have it. Just because it did happen when cameras weren’t around. Maddi was also there, Siobhan was also there, so they heard it with their own ears, and then later on other people and rumblings around town… Everybody in the group was starting to learn about the conversation that was had and the things that were said, and I’m the kind of person that’s just like, “You know what? If it was happening to me, I would want somebody to come and tell me.” I don’t know, yeah, that’s the kind of person I am. If my partner’s going behind my back and talking poorly about me, I would want to know. And also Emmy being my best friend, it was a secret that I held on to for so long because I never like to put myself in other people’s business or their relationships, especially just because this group is notorious for getting in other people’s relationships. And so it just kind of put me in a sticky situation, and it was almost kind of… throughout the time, it was a little unbearable to be around her for me because I felt so uncomfortable.

And then finally getting to the lake when I knew, okay, we’re not in Charleston, we’re also not at work. I can sit down with her and have this conversation because if I don’t do it now, it’s gonna blow up in her face and she’s gonna be blindsided. And I know that if it were happening to me, the last thing I would want is that, and the only thing I would have wanted is for my friends to sit me down and have a one-on-one conversation.

Do you think like the reason that it was the right time — other than what you just said — is also because other people were talking about it?

Michols: One thousand percent. Yeah, everybody already knew.

When I talked to her, she seemed disappointed that people chose to bring it up when the cameras were around, but it sounds like you were afraid people would blindside her?

Michols: Yeah, I mean, that conversation was kind of like when push comes to shove. That was definitely one of those scenarios. It kind of sucks because of the way that it played out, but I feel better now that the conversation was had. I think that I would have felt worse if everybody would have just ambushed her or attacked her at dinner. And then you are as transparent as you could be in a situation like that. You’re handed this information about one of your closest friends. What else can you do?

I think it was just a little worse for me, too, just because I don’t have that close of a relationship with Will, and this is somebody that I’m best friends with. So it’s just like already very tricky and it’s like one of those, “I’m not trying to put you in a weird position where you have to choose your boyfriend over your friend. I’m telling you this because I would want to know if it were me, but also because I respect you enough to tell you.”

So this was the first group trip of the season, but I hear that we’re going to Vegas next. Can you preview a little bit of that? I understand Will will be there. Is that gonna be awkward for you guys?

Lake: I would expect a lot of drinks, a lot of fights, a lot of drama, but also a lot of fun. We bonded as a group, but we also had our moments where the bond broke.

Lake, your personality is you’re very bubbly and positive and, well, a little bougie. You remind me of Grace Lilly in that way. Are you guys going to have any time together this season?

Lake: Yes, I mean, I knew Grace before, whenever she was working at Republic, and we worked together for a little bit. And Grace is also a lot of fun. We’re fun.

Going beyond that trip and everything like that we’ve talked about, is there anything else fans should know about the season ahead?

Lake: It’s the unexpected, and take some things with a grain of salt and then let the salt do the seasoning.
