JPMorgan’s Doug Petno among top contenders to succeed CEO Jamie Dimon

0

A senior JPMorgan Chase executive once thought to be a dark horse candidate in the race to succeed CEO Jamie Dimon is now a top contender for the role, according to a report.

Doug Petno, 59, is one of three people who have been mentioned as potential successors to Dimon alongside Troy Rohrbaugh and Marianne Lake, according to Bloomberg News.

Petno’s prospects to ascend to the chief executive role appeared dim when the commercial banking division that he headed within JPMorgan Chase was folded into another unit.

The restructuring led Petno to report to two other rising executives.

But his candidacy was unexpectedly boosted earlier this week after the nation’s largest lender announced that it was elevating Jenn Piepszak to the chief operating officer position — taking her name out of the running for the top slot.

Daniel Pinto, a top Dimon lieutenant who has spent four decades at the bank, will vacate the COO role later this year and retire.

The reshuffle included Petno being promoted to co-head of the combined commercial and investment banking division.

Petno is considered a highly valued member of Dimon’s leadership team — having helped expand JPMorgan Chase’s commercial banking division.

Under his leadership, commercial banking more than doubled its revenue, growing from $6.4 billion in 2011 to $15.5 billion in 2023, outpacing the firm’s overall 63% revenue growth in that period.

More recently, Dimon entrusted him with expanding JPMorgan’s footprint in Silicon Valley, targeting startups, venture capital firms and high-growth tech companies after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and First Republic Bank.

“He’s a great client guy and a culture carrier — he built a great business in commercial banking, including the investment-banking partnership,” Dimon told Bloomberg News in an interview Friday.

“He’s also got a great sense of humor — one of the best on the OC.” The “OC” is the operating committee that runs JPMorgan Chase.

Another member of the operating committee is Rohrbaugh, who is co-CEO of the commercial and investment banking division.

Petno will now run that division, which is larger than Goldman Sachs, jointly with Rohrbaugh as a result of his promotion.

Lake runs the lender’s community and consumer banking division.

JPMorgan Chase declined to comment.

Mayor Eric Adams is right to meet with President-elect Trump on behalf of regular New Yorkers

0

Of course Mayor Eric Adams was right to meet with President-elect Donald Trump on Friday: New York City needs every friend it can get in Washington, and Queens’ most famous native son can be a very good friend indeed.

That Adams’ trip to Florida upset his lefty critics is just icing on the cake.

Indeed, having Trump as any kind of ally can only help Adams help the city, when the state Legislature is only interested in milking Gotham for tax and toll money, and torturing its citizens by empowering criminals and keeping madmen on our streets.

City Hall explained the mayor’s agenda: “a productive conversation with the incoming president on how we can move our city and country forward.”

Yes, it’s good for Trump and Republicans to have the friendship of a black mayor voted for by working people — and let’s not forget, the working class has shifted massively toward the GOP in the Trump era, especially in the last election and nowhere more so than in New York.

Adams’ progressive rivals will surely snipe; once again, their ideology is getting in the way of what’s best for the regular New Yorkers they (only) pretend to care so much about.

Fact is, Gotham is lucky Trump wants to help New York — his longtime home, the town where he rose to fame and fortune.

Even if it’s also a stronghold of the progressive resistance, which spent much of the last four years waging shameless lawfare against him.

Heck, state Attorney General Tish James and Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg have given Trump plenty of reason to resent New York; offering the incoming president at least one friendly face in high office here should be a complete no-brainer.

Unlike the lefty chuckleheads bashing his visit, Adams realizes that a hyperpartisan, adversarial relationship between City Hall and the White House can only harm the interests of regular New Yorkers.

Not least because the city gets billions in federal aid that most of the Republicans who run Congress would be happy to trim, even if the state’s GOP reps in the House have already moved Trump to rethink the SALT cap.

Federal funds for NYCHA, the MTA and the Gateway project for new Hudson rail tunnels are also at stake, and while Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries aren’t powerless on that front, they’re the Senate and House minority leaders.

The New York left, which loved the Biden open-border policy, wants the city in open rebellion against Trump’s early drive to get criminal illegal migrants out of the country.

But most New Yorkers want Tren de Aragua and MS-13 driven out.

The NYPD and other city law-enforcement agencies will need to work with the feds on this front, and Adams realized it.

“We will not be a safe haven for those who commit violent acts. We don’t do it for those who are citizens, and we are not going to do it for those who are undocumented,” the mayor said after meeting with incoming border czar Tom Homan last month.

Adams, like Trump, is fundamentally a pragmatist; both men prize personal relationships and loyalty (sometimes to a fault); this could be the start of a beautiful friendship between two native sons of the city.

Let’s hope so, because a war between New York City and Washington can only mean big trouble for ordinary New Yorkers.

Why has the FTSE 100 just reached a new daytime high?

0

The FTSE 100 hit a new intra-day high on Friday (17 January), peaking at 8,508 points in the early afternoon. It might be even higher by the time you read this.

Stubborn inflation, rising business costs and threats of US trade tariffs don’t seem to be holding anyone back.

In fact, inflation news might actually have helped boost optimism. The UK’s December figure fell to 2.5%, not quite at the Bank of England’s 2% target but it’s the right direction.

US inflation outlook

And the US core consumer price index (CPI) dropped to 3.2% year on year, with 3.3% expected. Again still some way to go, but that’s positive.

Sterling falls will have helped boost UK stock prices too.

Multinational company earnings are closely tied to the US dollar, and the pound has slipped 9% from $1.34 in September to $1.22 as I write.

On the cards

I think bull market signs have been in the air for much of the past year, and I reckon it shows in the banking sector.

UK investors seem to have been largely inward-looking for the past few years. But a glance at what’s been happening to the Barclays (LSE: BARC) share price shows a big change.

Barclays shares are up 104% in the past 12 months. Crucially, it’s perhap the most outward-looking and diverse of the big Footsie banks.

Global banking

At Q3 time, Barclays reported a 6% rise in Investment Bank income, with a 3% boost for Global Markets income.

If the incoming US administration relaxes some regulations regarding investment banking as expected, the world outlook for the sector might get even brighter.

Analysts are already forecasting rises in earnings and dividends for Barclays in the next few years. The predicted dividend yield for 2024 is down to 3% after the share price rise, mind. So maybe the shares are fairly valued for now.

Though Friday’s bullish stock market is cause for cheer, there is a bit of a fly in the ointment.

Reasons for caution

The Christmas retail period was disappointing, which I think could put a drag on markets and perhaps even pull the outlook for the banks back a bit.

Forecasters had predicted a 0.4% month-on-month rise for retail sales in December. But figures just out from the Office for National Statistics instead show a 0.3% drop.

Food retailers faced the biggest hardship, with a 1.9% fall.

It raises the fear that the UK economy might have shrunk in the final quarter of 2024. Still, there’s a bright side even to that. Along with the drop in inflation, it surely boosts the chance of an interest rate cut at February’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting.

What does it mean?

So what should investors do about the booming FTSE 100? Sell up and pocket some profit? Or maybe pile in now it looks to be on the up?

I’m pleased to see the optimism, but it doesn’t change anything for me. I’m looking to invest in companies with great long-prospects at good prices. Same as always.

How Apple is in the race for workplace AI – Computerworld

0

Tomorrow’s world

Tomorrow’s employees have grown up with that tech, meaning Gen Z is also set to be Generation AI. This is going to become increasingly important to business users, who will need to make the right investments today to ensure they have appropriate tech (including experience and policy) in place.

This is something that’s evidently important to device, service, and operating system vendors, as each and every one of them is now engaged in a rapid sprint to deploy AI in their offerings. Apple, of course, is a little unique in that it is attempting to weave privacy into the systems it providesincluding Apple Intelligence, something that will be seen as of increasing importance to business users as they seek to lock down their information, both in competitive terms and also to meet data protection requirements.

For digital natives, privacy is a currency they want to control

It’s interesting to see how Generation Z sees privacy. These digital natives want to control the digital narrative concerning their lives, have grown up with the internet, and are more likely to digest information in video than written form.

Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie will get up to four weeks in theaters

0

Greta Gerwig’s follow-up to Barbie, an adaptation of one of C.S Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia books, will be exclusively viewable in theaters for four weeks before it hits Netflix on Christmas, according to a new report from Puck. Netflix is historically anti-theater, but it seems like it can set that aside for the right filmmaker.

Theaters will have a four-week exclusive window on the film globally — longer than the week Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery got — but it will only be available to watch on IMAX screens to start. IMAX is guaranteeing the film will be shown in the format for two weeks, according to Puck, and is willing to add another week if there’s demand. After that, the film could come to non-IMAX theaters, too.

Netflix, while owning a few theaters itself, is philosophically-opposed to theatrical exclusivity. It’ll put Netflix movies in theaters for the amount of time required to qualify for awards season, but otherwise avoids them like the plague. That might be nice for subscribers who’ve become accustomed to watching everything at home, but most filmmakers want their films to be seen on the big screen. For example, Netflix reportedly lost the chance to distribute Saltburn director Emerald Fennel’s next film, an adaptation of Wuthering Heights, because it refused to give the film time in theaters, according to The New York Times.

Rumors circulated that IMAX, Gerwig, and Netflix were discussing a deal in October 2024, and it seems the director got her way. It’s strange to have to fight tooth and nail for what could be a blockbuster movie to be seen by a paying audience. There’s plenty of evidence that putting films in theaters makes money, but it’s a lesson that even company’s like Disney have had to relearn after the streaming boom. Moana 2 started as a Disney+ filler before it was tweaked and turned into a theatrical release that made over $200 million in December 2024.

It’s impossible to say if this decision signals a longterm change at Netflix, but future filmmakers working with the company now have interesting precedent to point to for their own theatrical deals.

Why the New James Bond Should Be Aaron Taylor Johnson

0

The speculation surrounding which actor will be chosen to play the latest iteration of action and espionage icon James Bond continues to run rife. But maybe the best choice for the coveted role has already been found? A favorite for the new 007 for some time, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
clearly contains all the ingredients necessary to make a great 007, and while he may now be the obvious choice for the role (he’s been the bookies’ favorite on and off for a while now), perhaps, in this case, the obvious choice is simply the best choice.

Whether looking back at his prior roles, which include action, romance, thrillers, and more, or whether simply looking at the tall, dark, and handsome man himself, Aaron Taylor-Johnson undeniably has everything needed to make a great James Bond and thus keep the beloved franchise alive and lead whatever shape the reboot takes into the future. So, let’s break down why Taylor-Johnson, while being the obvious choice, is also the right one.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Prior Roles Prove He Has What It Takes to Be 007

Aaron Taylor-Johnson now has a vast array of roles from across the spectrum of genres behind him. Stepping into the spotlight as John Lennon in the Beatles biopic Nowhere Boy, the actor quickly joined the realm of superheroes, excelling as the fledgling costumed vigilante Kick-Ass and later Kick-Ass 2, before adding his name to the MCU as Pietro Maximoff in Avengers: Age of Ultron. So, already, we’ve seen him as a man destined for greatness and a fist-fighting action hero. What more could you want?

Okay, so you want more. Taylor-Johnson has proven himself adept at all sorts of characters, including hero roles in the likes of Godzilla, Tenet, and The King’s Man, a romantic lead in Anna Karenina, and tapped into his dark side in the superbly eerie Nocturnal Animals. He did that without even mentioning his other action fare in Bullet Train, The Fall Guy, and Kraven the Hunter. Clearly, he possesses everything necessary (and then some) to make a captivating Bond.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Has the Action, Comedy & Drama Muscles Needed for Bond

Now that you’ve familiarized yourself with Taylor-Johnson’s back catalog, it’s clear that the actor has muscles. And we’re not just talking about the ones necessary to sell a tiny trunks moment, ala Casino Royale. To really deliver as 007, whoever is chosen needs to be able to stretch not just their action muscles but their dramatic and comedy ones, too.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s career so far not only shows off his talent as an actor but also his adeptness at leaping from action to drama to comedy in the blink of an eye. A quality needed for 007 and the sheer number of personas at his disposal in his life as a spy. Much like Bond himself, who is able to slip into any scenario, Taylor-Johnson can glide effortlessly across genres and even from smaller, more isolated stories, as in the likes of Nocturnal Animals and The Wall to major big-budget blockbusters like Bullet Train and Kraven.

One of the Worst James Bond Films Released 40 Years Ago — Should You Give It a Second Chance?

Roger Moore’s lackluster performance in ‘A View to a Kill’ proves there needs to be an age limit to play James Bond.

Not only that, his vast genre experience also suggests that Taylor-Johnson could bring together the many facets of Bond, combining the comedy of Roger Moore, the suaveness of Sean Connery, and the grit of Daniel Craig to create something completely different.

He Meets All the Necessary Criteria as Laid Out by the Producers

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been a favorite for the role of James Bond for some time. And it’s not hard to see why. Tall, dark, and handsome, the actor possesses all the criteria as laid out recently by long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Speaking with The Independent back in November last year, the pair revealed that the next actor chosen to be James Bond following Daniel Craig’s departure in 2021’s No Time to Die will be “a man” and will be “in his 30s.” Not only that, the actor will need to “agree to doing at least a decade’s worth of films.”

Considering Taylor-Johnson is both a man, aged 34, and isn’t tied down to any major franchises (the Sony Spider-Man Universe is now dead, and his character in 28 Years Later will surely also end up in the grave eventually if the other movies in the franchise are any clue), he ticks all the James Bond boxes.

James Bond Fans (and Experts) Want Him to Do It

Not only has Aaron Taylor-Johnson been one of the top choices among 007 fans for a while now, often finding his name alongside Venom star Tom Hardy, Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill, and Luther star Idris Elba, but James Bond expert and president of 007GB: The British James Bond Fan Club, Philip Dewhurst, can see the Nosferatu star slipping effortlessly into the iconic tux.

One Actor Has Appeared In More James Bond Films Than Brosnan, Craig, and Connery Combined

He’s made appearances in 17 James Bond movies and you probably didn’t even notice…

Speaking with MailOnline back in March 2024, Dewhurst explained that “Bond films are reflective of what is going on in the world but they don’t follow the exact same blueprint.” Believing that the “best Bonds are the ones that are somewhere in between” the source material and something unique, Dewhurst agrees that “Taylor-Johnson has it in him to be rough, but he could be romantic and he can be very suave and quite funny. These are all things you need to be Bond.” So, if you don’t want to listen to us, then at least take it from the experts: Aaron Taylor-Johnson has got what it takes.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Could Be Very Different to Daniel Craig’s 007

Rebooting the James Bond franchise after the Daniel Craig era will be no easy task. Whether the series continues to be set in the modern day or whether the studio decides to take the adventures back in time to the 1950s and, thus, the setting of the novels is yet to be determined. But one thing’s for sure: they are going to need to differentiate themselves from Craig’s legacy.

The easiest (and fastest) way to do this is to present audiences with a very different kind of Bond. And Aaron Taylor-Johnson could well be the answer. Not only could the actor bring a seriously dark edge to the role alongside the swagger, ramping up the somewhat sadistic nature teased by Craig’s Bond (remember the devilish smile that spreads across his face when he blows up a bomber in Casino Royale?), he could also bring a lot more comedy and chutzpah to the role. Take his Bullet Train character, remove the mustache and drop the accent, and you could have a very different, but still familiar enough, James Bond ready to lead the latest iteration. Aaron Taylor-Johnson can next be seen in 28 Years Later, which debuts in theaters on June 20, 2025.

Empire State Building to honor Vince Carter when Nets retire jersey

0

NEW YORK — The Empire State Building is joining in the party to celebrate Vince Carter’s jersey retirement.

The landmark building will be lit in red, white and blue, the Nets‘ former colors, when Brooklyn retires the Hall of Famer’s No. 15 jersey on Jan. 25 at halftime of its game against the Miami Heat.

The No. 15 will be rotating on the landmark’s spire, the Nets announced Thursday.

Carter played five of his NBA-record 22 seasons with the New Jersey Nets and set the franchise record with 2,070 points in 2006-07. He was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in October.

Carter’s jersey will be the seventh retired by the Nets, the first since his former teammate Jason Kidd was honored. The Nets switched their colors to black and white when they moved to Brooklyn in 2012.
