Apple Watch Solo Loop bands are on sale for up to 70 percent off

0

If you want to get Solo Loop bands for your Apple Watch in several colors, this may be your chance to grab a few at a discount. Woot is selling them for up to 70 percent lower than their actual price, so you can get the Braided Solo Loop bands that sell for $99 on the official Apple website for just $30. The regular Solo Loops are also on sale, and you’ll only have to pay $20 instead of $49 for one. That’s just a few dollars more than some third-party bands considered as affordable alternatives to official Apple products. Apple’s Solo Loop bands for its watches are stretchable, don’t have any overlapping parts and come with no clasps or buckles. The company says they’re “designed to provide a precise, comfortable fit,” which means you’ll have to make sure to get the correct size for your wrist if you want to be able to put one on comfortably and make sure it doesn’t slide off.

The braided variants on sale come in several black and white hues, blues, greens, purples, reds, oranges and yellows. You can also get the rainbow-colored 2021 Pride Edition band. Apple’s braided Solo Loops are made with strands of recycled polyester yarn filaments around ultrathin silicone threads. If you don’t like their textured feel, you can opt for the regular Solo Loop bands made of liquid silicone rubber instead. The same colors are on sale, and you can get any of them for $20. They’re sweatproof and waterproof, so they’re probably the better choice for physical activities, though the braided bands are sweat- and water-resistant, as well.

You’ll be able to choose your watchface measurement and your wrist size on Woot. If you don’t know what size you’re supposed to wear, you can check out Apple’s pages for its Solo Loop bands for instructions on how to measure your wrist.

Biden Has Created More Jobs Than Trump, Obama, and George W. Bush

In the future, the presidency of Joseph R. Biden will be evaluated by historians and experts as it settles into the public memory. Presidencies are often remembered more for the feeling they engender than the policies passed. The presidency of Barack Obama evokes good feelings in many Americans, while the presidency of George W. Bush always carries with it the lingering sense of 9/11 and the Great Recession.

Who knows what Biden’s presidency will feel like in the future, but in terms of accomplishments, the current president has put up numbers in terms of jobs that none of his recent predecessors can match.

Via Axios:

Biden is now at +16.1 million, aided by the post-pandemic economic recovery.

  • Trump oversaw 2.1 million job losses, although there were 6.6 million jobs added during his first three years in office (i.e., pre-pandemic years).

  • Obama oversaw 7.1 million job gains, with losses at the beginning of his first term due to the Great Financial Crisis.

  • Bush oversaw 5.2 million job gains.

  • Bill Clinton has a stronger record than any of his successors, with a total of 23 million jobs added, although his annual average trails that of Biden.

Bill Clinton’s presidency is a good example of one that may not be remembered much for specifics outside of the Lewinsky scandal, but the good economy of the 1990s is in part, one of the reasons why that decade inspires so much nostalgia for many Americans.

Joe Biden’s record is very impressive, and given the massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations that Donald Trump and his party are planning to enact, it is a safe guess that Trump won’t touch the Biden jobs record.

Republicans are setting the table for the era of steady job creation after the Great Recession to come to an end at some point over the next few years.

What Joe Biden has accomplished deserves more recognition and praise, but things have been so steady, minus the pandemic, for so long that I am of the opinion that many Americans are taking the economy for granted.

Joe Biden oversaw an era of job creation that may not come the nation’s way again for a very long time. Many of these jobs were created due to decisions that Biden and congressional Democrats made.

Biden created more jobs than the previous three presidents combined. He never had a month of job losses as president, and even though he is overlooked in the present, Joe Biden should be remembered fondly in the future.

What do you think of Biden’s job record? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Gay men can become priests, as long as they remain celibate, new Italian guidelines say | World News

0

The Vatican has given the green light for gay men to become priests – as long as they remain celibate.

In an unexpected adjustment to practice in the Catholic Church, the new guidelines from Italian bishops will allow gay men to enter seminaries.

Although the Vatican had not explicitly prohibited gay men from entering the priesthood in the past, an instruction from 2016 barred men who have “deep-seated homosexual tendencies”.

The new guidelines, approved by Italian bishops, say seminary directors should consider a priestly candidate’s sexual preferences, but only as one aspect of their personality.

“When referring to homosexual tendencies in the formation process, it is also appropriate not to reduce the discernment to this aspect alone, but … to understand its meaning within the whole framework of the young person’s personality,” the guidelines say.

It’s not clear if the new guidelines will be reflected in other countries.

Pope Francis accused of using homophobic slur

Pope Francis, who has been pontiff since 2013, has been viewed by some as having taken a more welcoming approach towards the LGBTQ+ community.

This has included allowing priests to bless same-sex couples on a case-by-case basis – but the admittance of gay men into the priesthood has remained a taboo subject.

Pope Francis previously called for careful screening of seminarian candidates, and has in the past sharply warned priests who pursue sexual relationships to leave the priesthood.

The wildfires that have devastated huge swaths of Southern California have also disrupted the industry that makes the region famous: Hollywood. Many well-known performers have reported that the wind-whipped flames destroyed their homes. And just as the annual Hollywood awards season kicked off, the fires prompted red carpet event cancellations, delays in much-anticipated nominations announcements, and temporary halts to film production in the area.

Actor Billy Crystal was one of many stars who reported losing his home, which is in Pacific Palisades. “Words cannot describe the enormity of the devastation we are witnessing and experiencing,” he wrote in a statement shared with press.

“We ache for our friends and neighbors who have also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy. Janice and I lived in our home since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away.”

Like his character in the show This is Us, actor Milo Ventimiglia’s home in Malibu was destroyed by fire. “It’s not lost on me, art imitating art,” he told CBS, as he visited the rubble that was once the home he shared with his pregnant wife and their dogs.

Others, including Ricki Lake from Hairspray and Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride, have lost homes, too.

Many are also offering their support: Actress Jamie Lee Curtis announced that she and her husband, actor and director Christopher Guest, and their family pledged $1 million to support wildfire relief efforts. Paramount also announced they’d be donating $1 million to first responders.

Celebrities are just a small portion of those in the area who have been impacted by the blazes. Nearly 30% of the country’s film and TV and film workers live in this part of California, according to reports from Otis College of Art and Design. That includes behind-the-scenes writers, editors, camera operators, makeup artists, caterers and more.

Delays and cancellations as awards season kicks off

To steer clear of potential danger – and to avoid seeming tone-deaf to the deadly and destructive fires — star-studded red carpet events were scrapped this week. Amazon MGM Studios cancelled its Los Angeles premiere of their film Unstoppable, the story of wrestler Anthony Robles, starring Jharrel Jerome, Jennifer Lopez and Don Cheadle. Sony also cancelled its planned premiere of the film One of Them Days, a comedy set in Los Angeles and starring Keke Palmer and SZA.

Apple TV+ canceled its planned Monday premiere for the highly-anticipated second season of Severance. The streamer said it would be donating “to support the relief efforts on the ground and our thoughts and heartfelt support remain with everyone who has been affected by these tragic fires.”

The wildfires arrived just after the Golden Globes kicked off Hollywood awards season, upending a much-anticipated schedule of galas and events for the coming months. The American Film Institute, which planned to host an annual awards luncheon on Friday, postponed that event. The Critics Choice Awards, which were scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 12, were postponed for two weeks.

The Producers Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America and the American Society of Cinematographers delayed announcing their nominations for upcoming awards by several days.

Oscars hopefuls will have to wait as well. Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were originally scheduled to be announced on Friday, Jan. 17. But in an email to members shared with NPR, the organization said that event will be delayed until Jan. 19. “We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California,” wrote Academy CEO Bill Kramer. “So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”

Actress Jean Smart, who won the Golden Globe award for best actress in a TV comedy last weekend, urged upcoming award shows to cancel their telecasts and donate their profits. “With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters,” Smart posted on her Instagram account.

Productions paused as fires rage

Production in Los Angeles had already slowed in recent years. This week, many tapings were paused, and TV production came to a halt.

Late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! was shuttered temporarily and aired repeat episodes, as did Taylor Tomlinson’s After Midnight; a planned reboot of the show Hollywood Squares was pushed by CBS TV from this week to next.

Jean Smart’s award-winning series Hacks was supposed to begin shooting its fourth season this week. But in a statement to NPR, NBCUniversal said it was one of the productions on pause as part of its studios temporarily. Production also paused for Loot, Suits LA and Ted.

Robert Pietranton, a representative from Warner Bros., told NPR that it temporarily shuttered its Burbank production lot, where Abbott Elementary, All American, and the brand new medical drama The Pitt, would have been shooting.

Some Hollywood sound stages were threatened when fires broke out in the Hollywood Hills and other regions of Southern California. As of Friday, they had not burned.

Los Angeles’ film permitting office, FilmLA, sent out a warning telling producers, “If prior to the fires you obtained permission from FilmLA to film in or near an evacuation zone, expect to have your permit canceled. New applications to film in or near these areas will be denied, until local permit authorities instruct us otherwise.”

The wildfires added anxiety to filmmakers, performers, crew members and others in the industry who have already been worried about Hollywood productions leaving Los Angeles. In recent years, Canada and the United Kingdom have lured many productions abroad, and states including Georgia, New York and Illinois have offered generous tax credits to shoot movies and TV shows at their locations and sound studios.

To try to lure productions back to California, Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed more than doubling the state’s available tax credits for TV and film productions, to $750 million a year. If passed, California would offer the country’s second most generous incentive package for production – after Georgia, which does not put a limit on the amount of tax credits it grants filmmakers.

‘Light My Fire’ was written in Pacific Palisades home that burned

0

In 1967, Robby Krieger, the guitarist for L.A. band the Doors, wrote the hit single “Light My Fire” in the living room of his parents’ Pacific Palisades home. This week, nearly six decades later, the lyrics took on a disturbing resonance as the structure where the music originated burned to the ground.

The home on Alma Real Drive has been owned for the last 24 years by Claudio and Kathleen Boltiansky. On Thursday, after each lugged a 60-pound electric bicycle up the locally known Hillside Vance “secret staircase,” the couple were able to gain access to their street in the Huntington Palisades.

Two days prior, when the devastating wildfire first erupted, Claudio had set up a security camera in the backyard to monitor the blaze. By the time the power went out on Tuesday night, he could see that the homes neighboring his appeared to be engulfed in flames. Still, the Argentine immigrant, who owns a fine French antiques shop in West Adams, remained hopeful.

This was not only the home where the Doors famous song was written. It was where Claudio, 61, often hosted his buddies for their bimonthly poker games with a $60 bucket. Where his son and daughter used to catch their school bus. Where the mantle proudly displayed a vintage photograph of Kathleen’s grandparents on the day they became engaged.

Now it was gone. “It would be one thing to just lose our house, but the biggest loss we’re feeling is our whole community,” said Kathleen, 56 and an interior designer. “It’s never going to be the same.”

As they’ve struggled to absorb their new reality, the Boltianskys said they’ve been disappointed by the prevailing narrative that the Palisades as a solely affluent community.

“The misconception people have about the Palisades is that they think that everybody’s rich,” said Claudio. “People should know that this is not Beverly Hills, which has always been expensive. Before the 2000s, the Palisades was a very affordable neighborhood like any part of Los Angeles.”

“People that have been there for 20 to 30 years are people that are hard workers — plumbers, electricians, small-business owners. Yes, rich people live there, but so do hardworking, real people who were fortunate to buy at the right time and rode it all the way up to Ben Affleck moving in nearby.”

On Monday, Claudio is organizing a lunch at Fogo de Chão to gather with 19 other men he met through his poker games, the majority of whom also lost their homes. Most of them became friends when their kids were in preschool. “We need community right now — not money. People need to know that others care and are suffering with them at the same time.”

In a few years, he hopes he’ll be able to start hosting low-stakes gambling gatherings at the home he rebuilds on Alma Real. He and Kathleen are unwavering about that — they will return.

“We’re going to rebuild it as our forever home,” she said. “But Pali Strong is about community, and community is not the houses or the shops. It’s the people. We pray that will come back.”

UFC Vegas 101 start time, full fight card details | Dern vs. Ribas 2

0

What’s Hot:

Many had high hopes for Dern when the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist jumped into UFC’s Octagon six years ago. After all, she had shown promise in the minor leagues, jumping out to a perfect (5-0) record. She did start of great with two wins under UFC’s banner before running into Ribas in Oct. 2019, the first loss of her career in what was considered a huge upset at the time. Dern was able to bounce back to win four straight before running into yet another tough contender in Marina Rodriguez, who defeated her via unanimous decision in 2021. It was after that defeat when Dern’s inconsistencies really came to light, going a sub-par 3-4 since, which includes tough defeats to Yan Xiaonan and Jessica Andrade, who beat the submission guru from pillar to post thanks to an excellent display of striking. Dern snapped her two-fight skid in Aug. 2024 with a unanimous decision win over Loopy Godinez and now eyes her first back-to-back wins in four years against the first person to ever defeat her.

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

Since defeating Dern, Ribas has also been very inconsistent when it comes to getting back into the winner’s circle. She has alternated wins and losses over her last eight fights, with tough defeats to Maycee Barber, Rose Namajunas and the aforementioned Rodriguez along the way. Coming off a tough defeat at the hands of “Thug Rose,” Ribas is looking to bounce back and has the confidence she needs in her back pocket having already defeated Dern. That said, Dern has made improvements since their last meeting and will come in hungry for revenge and will attempt to use the momentum she has with her most recent win to push her through. A win for Dern won’t warrant a trilogy fight between the two, but I fully expect her to come out on top here in a closely-contested bout.

What’s Not:

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

Nurullo Aliev is undefeated (9-0), which includes winning his UFC debut fight in early 2023 by defeating Rafael Alves via majority decision. He’s been on the bench for nearly two years now, so it will be interesting to see just how much ring rust plays into the fight. The matchmaking here I don’t get because his opponent, Joe Solecki, is currently on a two-fight losing streak, so I would have liked to see matchmakers book Aliev against someone with a bit more upside, someone coming off a win (not back-to-back losses).

Original Card vs. Actual Card:

UFC Fight Night: Allen v Curtis 2 Weigh-in

Preston Parsons was originally set to face Andreas Gustafsson at this event before Gustafsson withdrew from the fight and was replaced by Jacobe Smith, who will be making his UFC debut. Also, Nurullo Aliev and Yanal Ashmouz were set to throw down at 155 pounds before Ashmouz withdrew for unknown reasons and was replaced by Joe Solecki. Plus, Germaine de Randamie was in talks to face Jacqueline Cavalcanti on this card before “Iron Lady” decided to call it a career.

Injuries:

No injuries were reported for this event.

New Blood:

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

There are several newcomers on this card including Bruno Lopes, who will make his UFC debut against Magomed Gadzhiyasulov. Lopes is 13-1 so far in his MMA career, earning his way to the big show via the Contender Series by knocking out Mikheil Sazhiniani in Aug. 2024. He will have a tough challenge in his first fight because Gadzhiyasulov is undefeated at 9-0, which includes a win over Brendson Ribeiro in his own UFC debut.

Nicolle Caliari will look to make a splash in her UFC debut when she battles Ernesta Kareckaite. Caliari is currently on a four-fight win streak and is also a Contender Series winner, defeating Corinne Laframboise via submission last September. The Brazilian strawweight is 8-2 as a pro. As for Kareckaite, she came up short in her own UFC debut by losing to Dione Barbosa, so dropping her first two fights under the UFC banner wouldn’t exactly be ideal.

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

Smith agreed to step in for Gustafsson after he withdrew from his fight against Parsons. Smith is undefeated (9-0), winning his fight on Contender Series via second round technical knockout, his seventh win in that manner. As for Parsons, he has seen better days, going just 2-3 in his first five fights inside the Octagon.

Austin Bashi, 23, will make his UFC debut against Christian Rodriguez, puttung his 13-fight win streak on the line in the process. Of those 13 wins, eight have been finishes — three via knockout and five by submission. He submitted Dorian Ramos on Contender Series to earn his shot, and is now out to make a splash right away against Rodriguez, who saw his four-fight win streak go up in flames at the hands of Julian Erosa in his last fight, losing via submission with 10 seconds remaining in the first round.

How The ‘Prelims’ Look:

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

Jose Johnson and Felipe Bunes will throw down in a Flyweight bout between two fighters coming off defeats. Johnson is coming off a loss at the hands of Asu Almabaev and is 1-2 in three fights under UFC’s banner. As for Bunes, he came up short in his UFC debut after getting knocked out by Joshua Van one year ago.

Thiago Moises has had a real rough strength of competition schedule when it comes to his UFC fights, facing off against the likes of Islam Makhachev, Beneil Dariush, King Green, and Benoit Saint Denis, so there really won’t be much that Trey Ogden will be able to throw at him that he hasn’t already seen before. Still, Moises needs to be on his toes because he can not afford another loss after coming up short against Ludovit Klein in his last outing.

Fatima Kline came into UFC’s ranks undefeated (6-0), but her debut didn’t go exactly as planned, suffering the first loss of her pro career at the hands of Jasmine Jasudavicius last summer. She will try to get the bad taste of defeat out of her mouth when she goes up against Victoria Dudakova, who is also coming off the first and only setback of her otherwise mint career at the hands of Sam Hughes five months ago.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

Ihor Potieira is currently riding a two-fight losing streak and is 1-4 overall in his last five fights. All told, he is just 2-5 inside the Octagon, so if he loses his third straight it could be the end of the road for him as he welcomes Marco Tulio to the Octagon. The UFC rookie will put his eight-fight win streak on the line in his promotional debut. Tulio is yet another product of Contender Series, with eight of his 12 wins coming by way of impressive (technical) knockout.

STRAWWEIGHT SHOWDOWN! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heads back to its APEX venue in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sat., Jan. 11, 2025, with an important 115-pound main event featuring jiu-jitsu phenom Mackenzie Dern, who looks to avenge her 2019 loss to Brazilian bruiser Amanda Ribas. In addition, longtime welterweight slugger Santiago Ponzinibbio returns to face off against “Mocambique” mauler Carlston Harris in UFC Vegas 101’s hard-hitting co-headliner.

Don’t miss a single second of face-punching action!

Interest Level: 5.5/10

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

In the co-main event of the evening, Santiago Ponzinibbio will battle Carlston Harris. Ponzinibbio was at one time considered a legit threat to the title in the 170-pound division, but has fallen on rough times over the last few years. “Argentine Dagger” is coming off two straight defeats and is 1-4 in his last five fights. Granted, three of those fights have been razor-thin split decisions going the other way, but the fact remains: he needs a win badly here because while he won’t get cut based on his name value, he won’t be getting co-headlining slots moving forward. As for Harris, he is coming off a 90-second knockout loss to Kalinn Williams (see it here), snapping his two-fight win streak in the process. All told, he is 4-2 inside the Octagon, and a win over Ponzinibbio would be the biggest of his career.

Another matchup I was scratching my head at was the one between Cesar Almeida and Abdul Razak Alhassan. Almeida is 6-1 as a pro, 2-1 under the UFC banner, while Alhassan is a just 2-5-1 in his last seven fights and hasn’t won consecutive fights in eight years. The math simply isn’t adding up when we talking about level of success in the combat world, which is still mind-boggling to me that with such a robust roster matchmakers can’t find better matchups. Then again, records don’t matter once they are locked inside the cage.

UFC Fight Night: Dern v Ribas 2 - Weigh-In

Chris Curtis recently made headlines after admitting that he didn’t accept a fight against Alex Pereira because he knew that the path to victory was a very slim and arduous one, and because he accused his opponent of planting spies in his camp. “Action Man” will attempt to get back into the UFC win column when he takes on Roman Kopylov in a middleweight affair. Kopylov is coming off a split-decision win over the aforementioned Cesar Almeida, bringing his UFC record to 5-3.

Kicking off the main card is a 170-pound tilt between Punahele Soriano and Uros Medic. Soriano snapped his two-fight losing streak last summer by defeating Miguel Baeza via unanimous decision. He has an even 4-4 record inside the Octagon, but will look to go one up in the win column against Medic, who is 4-2 under the UFC banner and is coming off a TKO win over Tim Means (see it again here).

Enjoy the fights!

Everything to Know About Her 2 Adopted Daughters – Hollywood Life

Image Credit: Elder Ordonez / SplashNews

Hoda Kotb left the TODAY show after nearly 20 years on the air. She announced her decision in September 2024, explaining the reason for her exit. “A new decade of my life lies ahead, and now, my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie.,” she said.

Hoda Kotb with daughter Haley in 2018. (Elder Ordonez / SplashNews)

Over the years, it was clear that Hoda prioritized her children above her career. However, she was able to balance both with grace.

“Sometimes I wonder like, ‘How did this happened? How did I get this?’” Hoda said of becoming a parent to E News. “I used to feel almost undeserving of it. But I don’t anymore. Something happened within me where I was like, ‘You know what, I’m worthy of these children, I’m worthy of myself. I’m enough just as I am. I will nurture and love these little girls, as long as God lets me have them for as long as I’ll be here.’”

And she’s very much open to adopting another child to expand her brood! Or at least she was toying with the idea in 2020, while she was still engaged to her boyfriend of 9 years, financier Joel Schiffman. “We wondered, you know, would our family be better with another child? Do we have enough love, do we have enough time, you know, will we be a better family unit?” she recalled to ET.  “And the answer to all those questions seems to be ‘yes, we would be.’ But you can’t control how life works,” she added. “It’s in God’s hands, it’s not in mine, so if it’s meant to be, we’re happy ’cause, you know, we have room and we have love.”

Sadly, Hoda announced she and Joel broke off their engagement in January 2022.  “We decided that we are better as friends and parents than we are as an engaged couple, so we decided that we are going to start this new year on our new path as loving parents to our adorably delightful children and as friends,” Hoda said on the third hour of Today. It remains to be seen if Hoda’s two daughters will still end up with another sibling, but drama did rock the family in February of 2023 when Hoda disappeared from the Today Show, later to reveal that her youngest daughter Hope had been hospitalized. She’s since been brought home and is recovering.

Let’s meet Hoda’s two girls, below!

Hayley Joy

In February 2017, at the age of 52, Hoda told her Today family that she welcomed her first child, Hayley Joy Kotb. “She’s a Valentine’s baby. She is the love of my life,” Hoda said on the show at the time. “I didn’t know my heart could feel like this. This is a moment in my life that I never thought would happen, and here it is, happening to me.”

Hoda, who was previously married to Burzis Kanga from 2005 to 2007, also celebrated the news on her Instagram. “And then my soul saw you and it kind of went, ‘Oh there you are. I’ve been looking for you,’” read the inspirational message.

Hope

The TODAY show anchor revealed to her co-hosts on the April 16, 2019 episode of the morning show that she adopted a baby again, another little girl named Hope Catherine Kotb. Hoda went on to talk about the sweet moment Hayley found out that she was a big sister. “We had Hayley downstairs, and Joel and I were like, ‘Wait; we have a present!’ So we went upstairs, and came down holding her. And we have been telling her ‘baby Hope is coming.’ She literally walked up to her, looked up at her, and she goes, ‘Hope.’ It was like one of those moments,” Hoda explained.

She also explained how she chose the moniker, claiming she hoped, prayed, and dreamed about having another child. How sweet! And check out how big Hoda’s two girls have grown on her most recent Instagram posts!

In March of 2023, news broke that Hoda had disappeared from The Today Show over a “family health issue.” It was later revealed that her two week leave of absence came about because Hope had been hospitalized. By March 6, her 3-year-old was home. “[Hope’s] vibrant and brilliant. She’s home,” she said in part on the show. “I’m over the moon that she’s home, and I can’t believe how amazing people are.” On June 6, she took to Instagram to share her daughter’s first pic since the ordeal.
