2 super-value FTSE 100 shares to consider right now!

0

Despite worries over the global economy and stubborn inflation, the FTSE 100 continues to make tracks at the start of 2025. In fact, the UK’s leading share index is now within a whisker of last May’s record highs above 8,400 points.

It’s been a strong couple of years for the Footsie. Yet long periods of underperformance mean that many top blue-chips are still trading at dirt cheap prices.

Here are two of my favourite FTSE 100 value shares today. Not only do they trade on rock-bottom price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios, they also carry tremendous market-beating dividend yields.

FTSE 100 share P/E ratio Dividend yield
HSBC (LSE:HSBA) 7.7 times 6.5%
Rio Tinto (LSE:RIO) 8.5 times 6.6%

Let me explain why I think they’re worth serious consideration.

Top bank

Asia-focused HSBC’s tipped to endure a slight earnings drop in 2025. This reflects in part the ongoing threat posed by China’s weak economy, and more specifically its slumping property sector.

But encouragingly, the bank’s so far managed to effectively navigate the tough trading environment. In the third quarter of 2024, it beat broker forecasts to post revenues and profits growth of 5% and 10% respectively.

I wouldn’t bet against HSBC beating full-year estimates for this year either, helped by ongoing efforts to accelerate cost cutting. According to Bloomberg, the bank’s targeting £3bn of savings through restructuring efforts that it aims to complete by June.

I think HSBC shares could deliver great long-term returns as financial product demand surges across its emerging markets. It has the scale and the brand power to supercharge its earnings growth, and plans to split its operations between ‘East’ and ‘West’ should help meet its goals.

Great miner

Rio Tinto’s another Footsie share expected to post a slight earnings dip in 2025. This also reflects problems in China’s commodities-hungry economy, allied with a broader slowdown of global growth.

Yet I believe it’s a value stock for patient investors to consider. I hold it in my own Stocks and Shares ISA and plan to increase my holdings when I next have spare cash to invest.

Over a longer time horizon, the outlook for major mining stocks like this remains compelling. Rio Tinto — which has a market-cap of £59bn — has the strength to weather temporary weakness in metal prices.

Expertise across a range of commodities including copper, iron ore and lithium means it’s well-positioned to capitalise on demand growth when the market upturn eventually comes. Factors like global decarbonisation, emerging market urbanisation and the growing digital economy should all lift industrial metals consumption substantially from current levels.

What’s more, a strong balance sheet gives Rio room to boost earnings growth through acquisitions and organic investment. Latest financials showed its net debt to underlying EBITDA ratio at just 0.4 times.

Spain’s beautiful seaside town where 44% of the population is tourists | Travel News | Travel

0

The Spanish island of Gran Canaria is a popular tourist destination for many reasons including the warm climate, stunning beaches and incredible culture it boasts.

The island is one of the largest of the Canary Islands, welcoming 20 million tourists last year – a record high for the islands.

However, for this particular town in the southwestern part of the island,  tourism is particularly important as tourists make up an estimated 44% of the town’s population.

According to data provided by Spain’s National Statistics Institute, in 2023 Mogan registered 4.55 million hotel overnight stays, with foreign tourists making up 4.19 million.

It doesn’t come as a surprise as within the town and the surrounding area, travellers can find a variety of tourists resorts dotted along the coastline.

The municipality it is located in and shares a name with is one of the ones which recieves the most visitors on the island. The Mogan Harbour described as one of the most beautiful towns on the island.

The town is recommended for those who would like to experience Gran Canaria’s culture. The old quarter of the town is home to the Church of San Antonio de Padua – a beautiful church built in 1814.

Or why not visit the five murals near Nicolas Quesada Park, that shows traditional canarian costumes and then travel on the road leading towards Puerto de Mogan where you’ll find the Molino Quemado (the Burnt Mill) – the island’s oldest and highest windmill.

While Mogan is a gorgeous town worth visiting, the Independent reported that authorities in the town have planned to approve a tourist tax in a plenary session that was held last month.

It will be set at €0.15 per person per day for visitors staying at a tourist establishment.

However, it will be the owners of hotels and holiday homes that will pay the tax to the Mogan Town Hall as local councils cannot impose taxes on overnight stays.

The rate could change annually depending on tourism activity predicted in the council’s budget and is expected to come into force this month. The profits generated will be used to improve the local tourism industry and infrastructure.

  • In the Refrigerator: Store leftover chicken pot pie pasta in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container.

‘The Rookie’ Begins Season 7 with a Big Achievement

0

Although The Rookie is in its seventh season, it hasn’t lost any momentum in terms of popularity and viewership. The ABC series has reached the #1 spot on the streaming service Hulu, showing that people are more invested than ever in the Nathan Fillion-led series. The police procedural drama has slowly grown in popularity as the story has evolved past Fillion’s character being an older rookie, with the show introducing new recruits while showing the original rookies coming into their own as police officers.

The series, which was created by Alexi Hawley, was initially inspired by the true story of William Norcross before the series began to veer off into various other storylines. The rise to the top of the streaming charts undoubtedly has to do with the seventh season premiere on January 7. Titled “The Shot,” the episode features plenty of high stakes while introducing new rookies. Season 6 of the series only had 10 episodes, making this new 18-episode season much more anticipated, given the wait between new installments.

Hulu has become one of the best ways for those without cable television to watch the series. New episodes of The Rookie are available the day after they air on ABC, so there is not that long of a wait to see what happens next. Moreover, all six previous seasons are available for those who want to catch up on the show or rewatch to refresh their memory of what happened in past seasons. The series is also available on Disney+, making it widely accessible.

‘The Rookie’ Has Built Plenty of Momentum For More Seasons

Star Nathan Fillion has also been busy outside his shooting schedule for The Rookie, as the actor was cast as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film. The movie is set to be the first feature film project of the new and improved DCU, and making Fillion a key part of it has yet to affect the production schedule of The Rookie. While the show’s initial premise may have once centered around him, the ensemble cast and overarching storylines have grown so that other stars can help carry the load.

Why ‘The Rookie: Feds’ Was Canceled After One Season

This spin-off of the Nathan Fillion-starred show was intended to start a new police procedural franchise. So what went wrong with ‘The Rookie: Feds?’

While the writer and actor strikes of 2023 may have stalled the previous season of The Rookie, it’s clear that the team behind the production are more than ready to release an exciting Season 7 to make up for the lost time. While Tru Valentino’s character Aaron Thorsen isn’t returning, the series has introduced two new characters in his place, Seth (Patrick Keleher) and Miles (Deric Augustine), who will undoubtedly add a new and interesting dynamic to the show. Hopefully, The Rookie delivers on all the action and drama fans want after a seven-month wait between this season and the last, because if anything, the show’s number one spot on Hulu displays that people want more. “I Think They’d Be Really Smart…”

0

While the show is still in the early stages of its development, Jennifer Hale is already weighing in on potentially returning for the Mass Effect TV adaptation. Hale, a highly regarded voice actor, starred in the first three games of the sci-fi RPG franchise as the female version of Commander Shepherd, as the lead character came with both a male and female option for players to choose. Development on a Mass Effect adaptation began regaining steam after shifting to TV on Prime Video with F9: The Fast Saga‘s Daniel Casey set to write the show.

During a recent interview with Eurogamer, Hale was asked her thoughts on the in-development Mass Effect TV show. While the game star humorously acknowledged she would like to see FemShep made canon for the show, she was very eager about her interest to return to the franchise with the adaptation, while also explaining why she thinks the show should bring back multiple voice actors from the game. Check out what Hale said below:

You will always get a yes vote from me on Shepard coming back in any form. That was such a gift, and it’s a gift I will always be extremely joyful to receive. I never supposed to tell creators what to do. The only thing I must say about that TV series is I want to play! Any capacity, I will be there with bells on! I think they’d be really smart to pull as much of the original cast into the show in cameos and Easter eggs and recurring and regular [roles] as possible.

I think that would be an absolutely genius move. The voice acting community are some of the most brilliant performers I’ve ever met… they’re the most gifted, hard-working, adept, skilled people I’ve ever met in my life in the acting field. So, I’m ready for the smart production company that stops overlooking that gold mine. I fully volunteer to be on the show.

What This Means For The Mass Effect TV Show

It Could Take A Page Out Of Another Adaptation’s Playbook

With Casey having only just been attached to spearhead the show this past November, there’s certainly a long way to go before the Mass Effect adaptation begins building its cast, let alone consider bringing back any original stars. One of the biggest factors that could affect Hale’s potential return is how the show looks to adapt BioWare’s game franchise, be it telling Commander Shepard’s story again, or tackling it from an original angle. Given the latter angle worked for fellow Prime Video RPG adaptation Fallout, it would make sense they’d encourage Casey to take that route.

Why Amazon’s Mass Effect Show Shouldn’t Use Commander Shepard

Amazon is reportedly working on a TV adaptation of the Mass Effect video games. Here’s why the show should avoid Commander Shepard’s story.

That being said, regardless of what path Casey takes to adapting the games, there is another game adaptation that the Mass Effect show could look to for bringing back original stars, that being HBO’s The Last of Us. Season 1 of the post-apocalyptic drama saw many of its game actors return to the property, albeit nearly all of them in entirely different roles, namely original Joel actor Troy Baker as the villainous James and original Ellie actor Ashley Johnson as her own character’s mother. Considering Hale’s continued interest in the world of Mass Effect, it would make sense for the show’s team to consider having her appear.

Hale also provided additional, unspecified voices in the original Last of Us game.

The other reason why this could work for the Mass Effect show is the wide range of alien races that exist in the franchise, many of whom would likely need to be brought to life with CGI and voiceover actors. Some of the more notable who would be key figures to the story should Shepard be the protagonist again include Garrus, voiced by Brandon Keener, Urdnot Wrex, voiced by Steven Barr, Tali’Zorah, voiced by Ash Sroka, and Thane Krios, voiced by Keythe Farley.

Our Take On Hale & Other Potential Mass Effect Returns

The Games Had A Number Of Big-Name Stars Who Could Also Come Back

Five characters from Mass Effect 2, from left to right: Thane, Miranda, Shepard, Grunt, and Mordin.

Considering who closely linked Shepard’s story is to player’s choices, it may feel weird for longtime fans to see them as the protagonist of the Mass Effect show, particularly since it would necessitate canonizing the character’s gender. That being said, I think Hale’s return would be a very fun nod to the source material, particularly if they take a similar route to the likes of The Last of Us by giving most of their returning stars some form of an impactful story rather than a quick cameo.

10 Most Important Characters To Save In The Mass Effect Trilogy

The Mass Effect trilogy forces players to watch beloved characters die, but some characters are critical to save for future events to go well.

I also don’t necessarily think that the Mass Effect TV show should stop at the main cast of the games for nostalgic returns, considering the games had some big names playing supporting characters. Whether it’s Yvonne Strahovski’s Miranda, who was clearly modeled after the future Handmaid’s Tale star, Carrie-Anne Moss’ Pirate Queen Aria T’Loak or Keith David’s Captain Anderson, the possibilities are endless for whom the show’s creative team should look to bring back.

Lakers, Clippers games for Saturday postponed due to L.A. fires

0

The Lakers’ game with the San Antonio Spurs scheduled for Saturday night in Los Angeles has been postponed by the NBA because of wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The NBA also postponed the Clippers’ game with Charlotte at Intuit Dome in Inglewood.

“The NBA and the Clippers and the Lakers organizations have been in communication with local officials in Los Angeles and Inglewood about the ongoing situation in the Los Angeles area and the game postponements ensure no resources will be diverted from the wildfire response efforts,” the league said in a statement.

The games will be played at a date to be determined later this season. Tickets for both games will be honored on the rescheduled game date.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Assn. also announced plans to donate $1 million for “immediate relief” to American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen and other organizations supporting the aid efforts in the area.

The Lakers held a practice Friday in El Segundo with the belief that Saturday’s game with the Spurs would be played while also understanding how fluid the situation is.

Lakers coach JJ Redick, who lost his home in the Pacific Palisades on the first day of the Palisades fire, said he hoped his team would be allowed to play Saturday.

“We’re prepared for whatever tomorrow. We obviously are going to work with the NBA, the Spurs, the city and do what’s right. I want to play tomorrow; I want to coach tomorrow. I want these guys to play tomorrow and if we can play, we’ll play,” Redick said. “I do believe for everybody, for everybody that has been impacted by this, there is a grieving process. There’s a healing process. I can only speak for myself, part of my healing and grieving process is being here with these guys and coaching basketball.”

The Lakers had even scheduled a shootaround for Saturday morning before the game was postponed Friday night. The team also had Thursday’s game against Charlotte postponed.
Both games will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Lakers are scheduled to play San Antonio again on Monday at Crypto.com Arena.

The Clippers posted a message on social media saying that events on their calendar for next week will go on as scheduled, including UFC 311 on Jan. 18. Intuit Dome also announced a benefit concert for Jan. 30.

Pelicans’ Herb Jones out indefinitely with labrum tear

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Pelicans forward and top defensive player Herb Jones has a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder that will sideline him indefinitely, the club announced on Friday.

The announcement came hours before the Pelicans were scheduled to play at Philadelphia – the first stop on a three-game road trip that also includes visits to Boston on Sunday and Chicago on Tuesday.

Jones underwent an MRI on Thursday after leaving Wednesday night’s loss to Portland.

Jones also missed 18 games earlier this season because of an injury in the same shoulder before returning on Dec. 5 and starting 16 consecutive games.

Jones has played in 20 of New Orleans’ 38 games this season, averaging 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.9 steals in 32.4 minutes per game.

Selected in the second round – 35th overall – by New Orleans in the 2021 NBA Draft, Jones has appeared in 240 games career games for the Pelicans and last season was named NBA All-Defensive First Team.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, pregnant with baby girl

0

Snoop Dogg soon will welcome another grandchild to his family, this time thanks to daughter Cori Broadus.

Broadus, the hip-hop icon and side hustle extraordinaire’s 25-year-old daughter, confirmed this week that she is expecting a baby girl with fiancé Wayne Duece. She told E! News that the baby might be “unplanned” but they are “blessed” regardless.

The Choc Factory Co. makeup executive told the outlet she is four months pregnant and explained that doctors were concerned for her “high-risk pregnancy.” In recent years Broadus has opened up about her health, including her experience living with the autoimmune disease lupus, which she was diagnosed with at 6 years old. She told E! she feels protected by God and that she and her baby are doing fine.

While her dad was hoping for a grandson, Broadus said she’s looking forward to doting on her soon-to-be-daughter alongside her fiancé. “I’m having a mini me,” she said.

Broadus unveiled her pregnancy journey nearly a year after she said she had a “severe stroke.”

In her January announcement she lamented the health scare: “I’m only 24 what did I do in my past to deserve all of this?” Less than two weeks later she said she was on the mend and that the stroke had landed her in the hospital.

Broadus is the youngest of Snoop Dogg’s three children with wife Shante Broadus. Earlier this month the father-daughter duo discussed their close-knit relationship on The Jennifer Hudson Show.”

“He’s always there for me and shows me everything I need to know in life,” Broadus said. “But I think a lot of people have expectations because I am his daughter, but I just try to be me at all times.”

Snoop Dogg said he has had to “step into the maturity lane” to understand his daughter and allow her to experience life on her own. “Her life isn’t my life,” he said.

Additionally, Snoop Dogg said he knew that Duece was “the one” for his daughter. The couple got engaged in November 2022.

“Their love is their love,” the rapper, getting emotional, said on the talk show. “But I also understand how much he loves her.”

Broadus and Duece kept their baby news under wraps until Monday, despite celebrating with a gender reveal over the weekend. Broadus shared several photos from the reveal to her Instagram story. She said she was very confident that she was expecting a baby boy and revealed that her baby girl will arrive in June. Duece also took to Instagram on Monday to celebrate.

“Girl dad,” he captioned photos of an ultrasound, his fiancée’s pregnancy test and himself holding Broadus’ pregnant belly. “Can’t wait to meet you baby girl.”

Legendary Soul Singer Was 89

0

Sam Moore, half of the seminal duo Sam & Dave, died Friday (Jan. 10) in Coral Gables, Fla. The cause of death was complications from surgery. He was 89.

Moore, who was revered by artists including Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Garth Brooks and Jon Bon Jovi, had an instantly recognizable tenor, first heard on such call-and-response classics as Sam & Dave’s 1960s hits “Hold On, I’m Coming” and the Grammy-winning “Soul Man,” both of which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart, as well as “I Thank You” and “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby.” The duo, who performed at Martin Luther King Jr.’s memorial concert at Madison Square Garden following his assassination in 1968, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 by Billy Joel.

Moore, who grew up in Miami, began singing in church and drew the attention of another legendary Sam, Sam Cooke, who wanted Moore to replace him in his gospel group The Soul Stirrers. However, after seeing Jackie Wilson perform, Moore shifted from gospel to pop and was performing at the King O’Hearts Club when he met Dave Prater and the two formed Sam & Dave.

Legendary Atlantic Records executives Ahmet Ertegun, Tom Dowd and Jerry Wexler saw the pair at the King O’Hearts Club and signed them to the label in 1965. Wexler passed them to Atlantic’s southern partner, Stax Records, where Isaac Hayes and David Porter took them under their wing and produced their iconic hits.

Following Sam & Dave’s breakup in 1970, Moore signed to Atlantic as a solo artist. He recorded a solo album produced by King Curtis featuring Donnie Hathaway and Aretha Franklin. However, after Curtis was murdered in 1971, the album was shelved. He reunited with Dave for a few years, but spiraled into heroin addiction, which was chronicled in the DA Pennebaker/Chris Hegedus documentary Only the Strong Survive.

Interest in the duo was greatly revived by 1980’s The Blues Brothers movie, starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. The pair’s main theme was their boisterous version of “Soul Man.”

The song “turned out to be an anthem, sort of like ‘Blowin’ in the Wind” or one of those,” Moore told the Library of Congress in a 2002 interview when “Soul Man” was added to the Library’s National Recording Registry. “And, I tell you, it doesn’t matter where I sing — perform it — at the end of the night; if we didn’t do ‘Soul Man, the room would go up in smoke!”

Moore also shared how he and Prater worked out how to trade verses, with the help of Hayes. “By me at that time being the dominate one — and I’m not bragging here — I always sang the high parts,” he said in the same interview. “We went back with Isaac and he took us back and forth [with the verses]. Isaac was like, ‘Sam, try something like this.’ I remember him saying, ‘We want it bright. Not a dull opening.’ That’s why you hear all the high. Isaac was the one that suggested that.”

In the early ‘80s, Moore became sober with the help of Joyce McRae, whom he married in 1982 and who became his manager.

Moore went on to perform for six U.S. presidents — Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump — and was a frequent performer at the Kennedy Center Honors.

Springsteen asked Moore to perform on his 1992 Human Touch album, as well as Only the Strong Survive, his 2023 album of soul covers.

Moore recovered his lost 1970 album, Plenty Good Loving, and released it in 2002 via EMI. “I met Sam and his wife, Joyce, when I was in my 20s and working for Rhino Records, who reissued the classic Sam & Dave albums,” says Exceleration Music creative director David Gorman, who was instrumental in the album finally seeing daylight. “Drooling fanboy that I was, I showed up to our first meeting holding a 45 and asking for his autograph. The 45 was his solo single ‘If I Should Lose Your Love.’ When he picked it up, his jaw dropped because he had completely forgotten that he ever made a solo record at all. Over dinner, his memories came flooding back and he remembered making an entire album but had no recollection around its fate. As soon as I got back to LA, I asked [mastering engineer] Bill Inglot if it really existed and within a few days he’d found the tapes and sent over a CD-R. It was brilliant. Sam, Joyce, and I worked together to find a new home for the solo album nobody remembered making.”

Four years later, Moore released his first new album in 30 years, Overnight Sensational, which featured Bon Jovi, Sting, Springsteen and Billy Preston, with whom he received a Grammy nomination for their duet of “You Are So Beautiful.”

In 2019, Moore and Prater received the Recording Academy’s highest honor, its Lifetime Achievement Award.

In his later years, in addition to continuing to perform, Moore became an artists’ advocate, including testifying in Congress on behalf of the Fair Play Fair Pay Act, which would pay performers for radio airplay.

“His loss is deep,” Gorman says. “He was a force of joy as a human being, who lit up everyone around him. As an artist he had the explosive ability to work a crowd out — even Otis [Redding] feared following Sam & Dave on stage — but I found Sam’s genius alone with his records, especially the ballads. Sam’s cries, his knowing asides, the way would use time as a weapon to hit you when it would hurt or heal the most, gave me comfort and companionship in ways no other artist could. He could turn up the tempo and turn up the heat, but his slow-burn just couldn’t be touched. He was a master, the last of his kind.”

At the time of his death, Moore was working on a gospel album with Rudy Perez. He is survived by Joyce, daughter Michelle and grandchildren Tash and Misha.

‘I’m a Cancer dietician and you can eat these without increasing risk’

0

A cancer dietitian has said that she wants to put an end to myths that we have to avoid certain food and drinks and instead, we should simply enjoy what we want to consume. And by doing so, she has revealed a surprising list of foods and drinks she claims can be consumed without risk.

Items we’re often told to avoid include red meat, artificial sweeteners, and fizzy drinks – yet these are on her list of safe things to have in our diets. With over 15 years of experience in oncology nutrition, Nichole Andrews regularly shares advice with her 200,000 TikTok followers. In her latest post, she shared a list of ‘safe’ items and it’s good news.

The 38-year-old said: “I know how amazing and powerful nutrition can be to help survivors have better treatment outcomes and reduce risk of recurrence. Based in Tri-Cities, Washington, US, she expressed her frustration at the misinformation out there, which prevents people from eating well, and her joy at being able to clear up confusion and help people eat confidently.

Previously, Nichole had shared foods she avoids due to her “cancer prevention lifestyle”, including alcohol, pepperoni, and sugary drinks. However, she has now revealed some unexpected safer options.

In good news for movie lovers, microwave popcorn is on the list. There is also a mention of artificial sweeteners, coffee, peanut butter, rotisserie chicken and soy products. Contrary to popular belief, Nichole says it’s safe to consume red meat, but advises not exceeding 18oz per week.

She clarified: “Red meat is not going to increase the risk of cancer at consumption, like alcohol and processed meats do, however they will increase risks of colorectal cancer after 18 ounces a week. I usually keep to one serving of red meat a week, or I just don’t have any at all.”

Although we are often told to avoid fizzy drinks, Nichole says that diet drinks are acceptable, as it’s the sugar content that can heighten cancer risks. She also noted excess body fat tissue can escalate the risk of 13 different types of cancer.

Nichole further advised: “Maintaining a healthy level of calories is key to keeping your body fat tissue down. I prefer not to get my calories from sodas.

“If you opt for a large soda during a meal out, you’re likely to consume a lot of extra calories. When I dine out, I usually choose water or unsweetened ice tea, or you could go for a diet soda.”

As for foods that can potentially reduce your risk of developing cancer? Nichole recommends cruciferous vegetables, berries, garlic, tomatoes, green tea, turmeric, leafy greens, nuts, carrots and legumes.
