Nets’ Cam Johnson will be reevaluated next week amid trade rumors

0

Cam Johnson’s final game as a Net may have already happened.

The star forward and team’s second-leading scorer, who has missed the past two games with a re-aggravated right ankle sprain, sat out Monday’s 110-96 loss to the Kings and will be reevaluated next week, said coach Jordi Fernandez.

Johnson will miss the next two games — at Charlotte and at Houston — this week, which leaves only two more games to play before the trade deadline on Feb. 6.

“He’ll be reevaluated I think next week. He’s out right now,” Fernandez said before tipoff at Barclays Center on Monday. “Obviously we want him to get that ankle right. He was good when he came back, it’s just like he tweaked it again twice. And again, it’s unlucky, but we just want to make sure that now it’s strong enough that he’ll be able to play through things and he’s 100 percent. Obviously, we want him back. We love having Cam Johnson, because you guys know his leadership and also the impact he has for us, but right now this is the situation that we have to deal with.”

Johnson is the latest Net whose name has come up in trade rumors following the departures of Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Schroder.

One of the teams Johnson has been linked to is Sacramento.

Johnson initially injured his ankle in the final seconds of the Nets’ 113-110 win over the Bucks on Jan. 2 while coming down with a rebound.

The injury sidelined him for five games, until his return against Portland on Jan. 14, when he scored 24 points. He re-injured the ankle in a loss to the Knicks on Jan. 21.

Noah Clowney exited late in the second quarter with what appeared to be a left ankle injury and was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Following the Nets’ seventh straight loss, Fernandez did not have an update on the young forward.

Clowney went up for a rebound, didn’t come down with it, and landed on Domantas Sabonis’ foot. He went down in what appeared to be a lot of pain and was holding his left leg. He was helped off the court by the training staff.

Cam Thomas is set to undergo scans on his injured left hamstring Wednesday, Fernandez said. Following that, the Nets will provide a timeline for his return.

Thomas, who is the team’s top scorer, averaging 24.7 points, has missed the past 13 games.

Ben Simmons (lower back soreness), Bojan Bogdanovic (left foot injury recovery), Johnson (right ankle sprain), Maxwell Lewis (left tibia fracture), Thomas (left hamstring strain), Trendon Watford (left hamstring strain) all sat out against the Kings on Monday.

BREAKING: Trump Uses Emergency Powers to Send U.S. Military into California and Provide Water: “The Days of Putting a Fake Environmental Argument, over the PEOPLE, are OVER.” | The Gateway Pundit

This post has been updated with additional information.

President Trump announced on Monday night that the United States Military has entered California amid ongoing wildfires to render assistance with turning on the water.

For weeks, the fires have burned across Los Angeles County, forcing evacuations, destroying more than 16,200 structures, and killing at least 29 people as of Monday.

“The United States Military just entered the Great State of California and, under Emergency Powers, TURNED ON THE WATER flowing abundantly from the Pacific Northwest, and beyond,” the President said on Truth Social. “The days of putting a Fake Environmental argument, over the PEOPLE, are OVER.”

This comes after President Trump signed an executive order Friday titled “Emergency Measures to Provide Water Resources in California and Improve Disaster Response in Certain Areas.”

“For weeks, residents of the Los Angeles area have watched raging fires consume their homes, belongings, beloved pets, and childhood memories. Almost immediately, firefighters were unable to fight the blaze due to dry hydrants, empty reservoirs, and inadequate water infrastructure. Today, at least 28 people have lost their lives and thousands more have lost everything else, with some damage estimates calculating hundreds of billions of dollars in damage,” the order states.

The order further notes that the fire has affected the entire nation, and therefore, “it is in the Nation’s interest to ensure that California has what it needs to prevent and fight these fires and others in the future.”

“it is the policy of the United States to provide Southern California with necessary water resources, notwithstanding actively harmful State or local policies. And it is the policy of the United States to assist Americans in disaster areas through responsive policies that more effectively empower them to rebuild and regain their livelihoods.”

The Secretary of Defense, Attorney General, Secretary of Homeland Security, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of the Interior, and the Secretary of Agriculture are ordered to “expeditiously take all measures, consistent with all applicable authorities, to ensure adequate water resources in Southern California.” The section granting this authority calls for “overriding disastrous California policies.”

Democrat state and local government leaders left critical aquifers empty, causing local firefighters to lose water and leaving the wildfires near-unstoppable. Despite having abundant access to water, the California Democrats have flushed annual water flow into the ocean to save a tiny endangered fish called the Delta Smelt, which they can’t even find in its natural habitat. Because of these radical environmentalist policies, 29 Americans have died, and thousands have lost their homes and livelihoods.

This is why Trump sent in the military to save the day and force California to provide water to the residents and firefighters of Los Angeles instead of dumping it into the ocean.

As The Gateway Pundit reported, President Trump also visited Los Angeles, California on Friday and called out Democrat Mayor Karen Bass for the city’s sluggish response and incompetence in allowing evacuated residents to return and rebuild their homes after the devastating wildfires. Trump criticized Mayor Bass for not promptly utilizing her emergency powers to expedite residents’ return to their properties and commence rebuilding efforts.

Trump Calls Out Democrat Mayor Karen Bass on Live TV Over Disgraceful Delays in Wildfire Recovery

President Trump made the announcement late Monday night, telling residents of the Golden State, “Enjoy the water, California!!!”

The United States Military just entered the Great State of California and, under Emergency Powers, TURNED ON THE WATER flowing abundantly from the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. The days of putting a Fake Environmental argument, over the PEOPLE, are OVER. Enjoy the water, California!!!

This is a developing story.

UPDATE: The California Department of Water Resources has denied that the military entered California. “The federal government restarted federal water pumps after they were offline for maintenance for three days. State water supplies in Southern California remain plentiful,” the agency said on X.

Donald Trump warns DeepSeek should be ‘wakeup call’ for America’s AI industry | US News

0

Donald Trump thinks the Chinese startup DeepSeek, which claims it has a technical advantage over US rivals, should be “a wakeup call” for American AI firms.

DeepSeek says its artificial intelligence models are comparable with those from US giants, like OpenAI which is behind ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, but potentially a fraction of the cost.

That has triggered a fall in various US shares, especially chipmaker Nvidia which registered a record one-day loss for any company on Wall Street.

But the US president believes the success of the Chinese firm could be helpful to America’s AI aspirations.

“The release of DeepSeek, AI from a Chinese company should be a wakeup call for our industries that we need to be laser-focused on competing to win,” Mr Trump said in Florida.

Image:
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has promised to outperform rival firm DeepSeek. Pic: AP

He pointed to DeepSeek’s ability to use fewer computing resources. “I view that as a positive, as an asset… you won’t be spending as much, and you’ll get the same result, hopefully,” he added.

On Monday, the DeepSeek assistant had surpassed ChatGPT in downloads from Apple’s app store.

More on Artificial Intelligence

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has given his rival some acknowledgement in a post on X, reacting to DeepSeek’s R1 “reasoning” model – a core part of the AI technology which answers questions.

“DeepSeek’s r1 is an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price,” he wrote.

But Mr Altman was also defiant: “We will obviously deliver much better models and also it’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor! we will pull up some releases.”

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is a startup founded in 2023 in Hangzhou, China.

Its CEO Liang Wenfeng previously co-founded one of China’s top hedge funds, High-Flyer, which focuses on AI-driven quantitative trading.

By 2022, it had created a cluster of 10,000 of Nvidia’s high-performance chips which are used to build and run AI systems. The US then restricted sales of those chips to China.

DeepSeek said recent AI models were built with Nvidia’s lower-performing chips, which are not banned in China – suggesting cutting-edge technology might not be critical for AI development.

In January 2024 it released R1, a new AI model which it claimed was on par with similar models from US companies, but is cheaper to use depending on the task.

Since DeepSeek’s chatbot became available as a mobile app it has surpassed rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple’s app store.

There have been concerns DeepSeek could undermine the potentially $500bn (£401bn) AI investment by OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank in Stargate which Mr Trump announced last week at the White House.

That project essentially aims to build vastly more computing power to boost AI development.

But while addressing Republicans in Miami on Monday, Mr Trump remained upbeat. He claimed that Chinese leaders had told him the US had the most brilliant scientists in the world.

He indicated that if Chinese industry could come up with cheaper AI technology, US companies would follow.

“We always have the ideas. We’re always first. So I would say that’s a positive that could be very much a positive development.

“So instead of spending billions and billions, you’ll spend less, and you’ll come up with, hopefully, the same solution,” Mr Trump said.

The intense attention on the Chinese firm has not all been good news though. It reported suffering “large-scale malicious attacks” on its services.

The company said it was hit by a cyber attack on Monday which disrupted users’ ability to register on the site.

Justice Department moves to fire at least 12 officials who investigated Trump : NPR

The acting attorney general moved on Monday to fire several Justice Department officials who worked on the federal criminal investigations into President Donald Trump, according to two department officials familiar with the matter.

In termination letters sent to more than a dozen officials, acting Attorney General James McHenry wrote that he did not believe they “could be trusted to faithfully implement the President’s agenda because of their significant role in prosecuting the president,” one of the officials said.

It was not immediately clear how many officials involved in the Trump investigations received termination notices. The news was first reported by Fox News.

The move comes the same day that Trump’s acting U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., Ed Martin, issued a memo announcing a “special project” to review the department’s prosecutions of Jan. 6 Capitol rioters, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

Martin instructed prosecutors to provide all information related to the use of a specific obstruction charge, including files, documents, emails, notes and other information. He also describes the use of the charge against rioters as a “great failure,” according to the person who described the memo to NPR.

Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled that the Justice Department went too far in applying the obstruction charge against Jan. 6 defendants. But several lower court judges had previously blessed the DOJ’s approach.

The moves are the latest in the administration’s aggressive approach to the Justice Department since Trump returned to the White House seven days ago.

Already, the department’s acting leadership has reversed policies on a host of issues, including charging decisions and immigration enforcement, and brought a halt to other work, including in the civil rights and environment divisions.

The shakeup also extends to department personnel: several senior career officials have been reassigned from their areas of expertise to, in many cases, an immigration task force.

President Trump, has lashed out for years at the Justice Department, accusing it of unfairly targeting him and his supporters in what he claims were politically motivated investigations.

He was particularly angry about the two investigations brought by special counsel Jack Smith. One case revolved around Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and the other case stems from Trump’s keeping of classified documents after he left office. Both cases were dropped after Trump won the election.

Department officials, including former President Joe Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, have rejected the allegations of weaponizing the department. They point out that the department prosecuted prominent Democrats during Biden’s term, including the president’s son, Hunter, as well as two prominent Democratic members of Congress.

Still, Trump frequently talked on the campaign trail about seeking vengeance against his perceived enemies, including at the Justice Department.

His pick for attorney general, Pam Bondi, and his choice for FBI director, Kash Patel, have both talked about investigating the investigators.

Trump social media claim of using troops to force water flow is refuted by California

0

President Trump on Monday night heightened his battle with California over water policy by suggesting U.S. military troops arrived in the state to turn on pumps and send more water flowing — something state officials quickly denied.

On Monday evening, Trump wrote that the military “just entered the Great State of California and, under Emergency Powers, TURNED ON THE WATER flowing abundantly from the Pacific Northwest, and beyond,” in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

The California Department of Water Resources responded in a statement: “The military did not enter California. The federal government restarted federal water pumps after they were offline for maintenance for three days. State water supplies in Southern California remain plentiful.”

Trump’s post came after he signed an order directing federal agencies to “maximize” water deliveries in California and “override” state policies if necessary, and following a longstanding debate with Gov. Gavin Newsom over the state’s water management policies.

Trump has lambasted Newsom, saying he has held back water supplies in California and impeded the response to Los Angeles’ recent wildfires. Newsom and state departments have repeatedly denied these claims, noting that there is a plentiful supply of water in Southern California.

“Water supply has not hindered firefighting efforts,” the Association of California Water Agencies said in a statement Monday. “Reservoirs in California are at or above average storage levels for this time of year, thanks in part to years of proactive water management.”

Trump’s executive order, issued Friday, outlines steps intended to increase the amount of water pumped from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.

The order, posted on the White House website Sunday, directs the Interior and Commerce secretaries to “immediately take actions to override existing activities that unduly burden efforts to maximize water deliveries.”

It calls for delivering more water via the federally managed Central Valley Project, one of the two main systems of aqueducts, dams and pumping facilities in California that transport supplies from the Delta southward. The president also directed the federal Bureau of Reclamation to ensure state agencies “do not interfere.”

In the order, Trump criticizes “disastrous” policies and water “mismanagement” by California, and directs federal agencies to scrap a plan that the Biden administration adopted last month establishing new rules for operating the Central Valley Project and the State Water Project — California’s other main water delivery system in the Central Valley.

Instead, Trump has told federal agencies to more or less follow a plan adopted during his first presidency, which California and environmental groups challenged in court, arguing it failed to provide adequate protections for endangered fish.

Trump has said he intends to try to weaken environmental protection measures, and has questioned why the state should keep certain flows in rivers to help species such as the delta smelt, “a little tiny fish.” It’s one of several threatened and endangered fish species in the Delta, including steelhead trout, two types of Chinook salmon, longfin smelt and green sturgeon.

He doubled down on his criticism in his Monday evening post, writing, “The days of putting a Fake Environmental argument, over the PEOPLE, are OVER. Enjoy the water, California!!!”

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the wildfires in Southern California underscore why the state should be delivering more water south from the Delta. But water managers and experts have said Southern California’s cities are not currently short of water, pointing out that the region’s reservoirs are at record-high levels following plentiful deliveries of supplies in 2023 and 2024.

State officials have also said that pumping to move water south from the Delta has nothing to do with the local fire response in Los Angeles.

Trump’s executive order focuses largely on the federally operated Central Valley Project, one of the state’s two main water delivery systems in the region, which transports water from the Delta to farmlands that produce almonds, pistachios, tomatoes and other crops.

The CVP ends in the southern San Joaquin Valley near Bakersfield and does not reach Southern California’s urban areas to the south.

Alex Pereira reignites potential Jon Jones fight, claims he’s a ‘bigger achievement’ than Tom Aspinall

0

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

UFC Light Heavyweight champion Alex Pereira may be booked to fight Magomed Ankalaev, but he’s still interested in fighting former divisional kingpin Jon Jones.

“Poatan” vs. “Bones” is a match up that makes sense in many ways. For one, it’s two of the largest active stars in the sport currently. Secondly, the two are the official champions in their respective divisions. Given that Pereira is somehow always the biggest person in the room and has nearly cleared out the 205-pound ranks, a jump into the Heavyweight title mix doesn’t sound unreasonable for the Brazilian knockout artist.

Generally, Pereira and Jones have been quite respectful towards one another, and Tom Aspinall is lurking as the obvious next foe at Heavyweight. For those reasons, the match up hasn’t yet really been demanded by fight fans, though it was discussed as an option prior to Jones beating up Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. Since then, talks have quieted, as Jones considers retirement or an Aspinall payday as his next move.

Well … “Poatan” still wants the fight. He revealed in an interview with Ariel Helwani that he recently talked with Jones about the potential match up, and he believes his name is a better one for Jones’ legacy than Aspinall.

“I’m the champ, I want to fight the champ. Let’s make the fight with Jon Jones … Before Jon’s last fight, we actually talked about fighting.” Alex Pereira stated through a translator (via Josh Evanoff). “More random talk, not too much about fighting. [He’s] not a friend or someone I talk with on the regular, but someone I respect. I know he respects me, and there’s mutual respect.”

He continued, “I think [Jon wants to fight me], because of the momentum and the risk, it’s a risk fighting Aspinall. There’s not a lot to gain there, it’s another title fight. But fighting Alex is much bigger achievement… It’s a bigger fight. We saw the fight [with Stipe] later. It was an impressive win and impressive performance.”

Indeed, Jones vs. Pereira would be massive bout that could move a lot of pay-per-view (PPV) buys. However, there might be an outright riot if Aspinall is left sidelined longer. Either way, Jones certainly has some leverage at the negotiation table, because either booking could be one of the biggest of 2025.

Common sleeping problem increases your risk of developing dementia

0

A recent study has unearthed a worrying connection between poor sleep quality and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have found that difficulty in entering the vital REM sleep phase correlates to cognitive deterioration.

REM sleep, known for being the intense, dream-heavy part of sleep, plays a key role in aiding the brain in processing and storing memories. Struggles with attaining this level of rest could hint at early stages of Alzheimer’s, the research indicates.

Published in ‘Alzheimer’s and Dementia,’ the research found that delays in reaching REM sleep—which occurs during the fourth 90-minute cycle of slumber—not only impedes memory formation but can also raise stress hormones. Dr Yue Leng PhD, the paper’s senior author, warned: “The delay in REM sleep disrupts the brain’s ability to consolidate memories by interfering with the process that contributes to learning and memory.”

Part of the team from UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, Dr Leng added, “If it is insufficient or delayed, it may increase the stress hormone cortisol. This can impair the brain’s hippocampus, a critical structure for memory consolidation.”

In the study, conducted by researchers from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing, 128 individuals over the age of 70 were invited to stay overnight at their sleep clinic. The participants, a third of whom had mild cognitive impairments, half diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and the rest with normal cognitive function, had their brain activity measured while they slept.

This included monitoring their brainwaves, eye movements, breathing, and heart rates. Participants were then divided into two groups based on how quickly they reached REM sleep.

Those who reached this crucial sleep stage first typically took 98 minutes, while those with poorer quality sleep took over three hours (198 minutes). Most Alzheimer’s patients fell into the latter group, which also tended to have higher levels of proteins associated with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Those with delayed REM sleep had significantly higher levels of amyloid (16%) and tau (29%) than the other group. This research contributes to the growing body of evidence linking sleep quality to dementia risk and could influence further studies into the effect of drugs that aid REM sleep on reducing this risk.

Dr Leng concluded: “Future research should study the effects of certain medications that influence sleep patterns, as these may modify disease progression.”

Recent research has uncovered that treatments for insomnia, which aid in achieving REM sleep, may also decrease tau and amyloid levels in the brain, sparking optimism that sleep therapies could contribute to reducing the risk of dementia. Neurologist Dr Dantao Peng, a senior co-author of the study, said: “This includes treating conditions like sleep apnea and avoiding heavy drinking, since both can interfere with a healthy sleep cycle.

“Patients taking certain antidepressants and sedatives that reduce REM sleep should discuss their concerns with their doctor, if they are worried about Alzheimer’s.”

How to Choose The Right Franchise For You

0

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

If you’re new to franchising, the abundance of information can seem overwhelming. How do you know where to start? You may have a generalized understanding of franchising, but part of performing due diligence means moving beyond the general and getting into the nitty gritty.

When it comes to understanding different franchise models, there are several categories to be aware of. First, you’ll want to understand the differences between “brick-and-mortar” and “service-based” franchises.

Related: Considering franchise ownership? Get started now to find your personalized list of franchises that match your lifestyle, interests and budget.

Location-based (Brick-and-Mortar) businesses

Brick-and-mortar franchises require significant upfront investment, particularly for real estate. Establishing a physical storefront or office space can involve high costs, and finding the right location is critical to success. Consequently, these businesses often experience a longer ramp-up period before reaching profitability.

Despite the high initial costs and extended setup time, brick-and-mortar businesses are known for their scalability. Once a successful model is established at a single location, expansion becomes more feasible, with additional locations benefiting from the existing brand presence and operational experience. Many of these businesses also integrate advanced technology solutions to enhance customer engagement and streamline daily operations.

However, the reliance on a specific location introduces risks. Factors such as local competition, foot traffic, and economic conditions can greatly influence the success of the franchise. Additionally, compared to service-based models, brick-and-mortar franchises are generally less recession-resistant, as discretionary spending tends to decrease during economic downturns.

Related: See Which Brands Topped Entrepreneur’s 46th Annual Franchise 500

Service-based businesses

Service-based franchises offer several advantages, making them an attractive option for prospective franchisees. They typically require a lower initial investment compared to brick-and-mortar businesses, have a quicker ramp-up time, and are highly scalable through territory expansion. With integrated technology capabilities, these franchises can streamline operations and improve customer experience. Additionally, because services are performed at the customer’s location, they carry negligible location risk, and many offer higher recession resistance by providing essential services.

Within the broad category of service-based franchises, two primary models emerge: project-based and subscription-model franchises. To illustrate, consider a roofing company as an example of a project-based franchise. This model involves providing one-time, high-value services, with revenue tied to individual projects. On the other hand, a lawn fertilization company represents a subscription-model franchise, where customers pay for recurring services, ensuring a steady revenue stream. While both types fall under the service-based umbrella, their operational models, customer relationships, and revenue structures vary significantly. This distinction allows franchisees to choose a model that best aligns with their goals, financial capacity, and market conditions.

Related: Here’s how we determined our annual Franchise 500 ranking and what we learned from the data.

Project-based model

Consider a customer in need of a new roof for their home – this is a high-ticket expense. Barring unpredictable weather like high winds or hail, they likely won’t be buying a new roof more than once every decade or more. Therefore, your customer base is not dependent on recurring customers. While this may not sound like a good thing, there are benefits to this model.

Often, these types of businesses can hire contractors based on the needs of a particular project. Rather than having a large employee team on hand waiting for customers to buy your product, a project-based franchise will wait until an order has been placed before hiring contractors to perform the service. You may only need yourself and an in-office worker to manage projects. This presents a variable cost model that means that the franchisee can maintain relatively lower overhead costs.

That said, take note of your strengths. The project-based model requires a more sales-oriented approach. Since these are high-ticket transactions, the salesperson (likely you as the owner, unless you are hiring a general manager) will need to interact with the customer before the service is performed to build trust and credibility. Furthermore, consider what kinds of projects you are interested in taking on. Is your focus residential home roofing? Commercial? The larger the projects, the more sales-savvy you’ll need to be. While this can lead to a much larger and more profitable business, an understanding of B2B is highly useful.

Also worth noting: while you likely won’t have many recurring customers, there are opportunities to obtain new customers through referrals from complementary service providers. This will require more upfront time and marketing effort, but it can pay off in spades if you proactively build this into your process.

Other “project-based” franchise examples include: restoration, fencing, siding, windows, remodeling, flooring, window treatments, and residential or commercial painting.

Related: The One Factor the Top Franchises of 2025 Have in Common

Subscription-model

Alternatively, consider customers who require lawn-fertilization services. This is typically a recurring service that may be needed bi-monthly (if not more frequently). Each service is low-ticket, but due to the ongoing nature of these services and the ability to stack many customers daily, this can also be a highly profitable and durable franchise model.

Unlike the roofing example above that can rely on contractors, a subscription model will have higher fixed costs. Lawn care companies require consistent labor employees, equipment (sprayers, spreaders, trucks, trailers, etc.), and possible in-office personnel in addition to your general manager. These costs add up.

However, dissimilar to roofing, which relies on strong sales skills, customers for lawn care may not even talk to a salesperson. With integrated technology (which is increasingly common in these franchises), your customers may simply book online or request virtual quotes from a national call center. Another value-add to the subscription-model is that your customer base is essentially unlimited. Less time will be spent finding customers and building out each project to match their needs. A lawn care company offers a specific set of services that can be templatized and repeated as a plug-and-play service.

Other “subscription-model” franchise examples include: irrigation, pest control, pool maintenance, HVAC, window cleaning, restaurant hood cleaning, parking-lot maintenance, pet grooming, child enrichment, and senior care.

While you’ll certainly learn lessons as you go, in franchising in particular, it’s important not to put the cart before the horse. The franchise model you choose at the beginning of your franchise ownership journey can be the difference between success and failure. Ensuring a compatible match upfront is vital for longevity in your future business.

Trump suggests Microsoft is in talks to buy TikTok, hopes for a ‘bidding war’

0

President Trump suggested on Monday that Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok and that he hopes a “bidding war” breaks out over the contentious Chinese-owned social media app.

“I would say, yes,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One when asked if the software giant was bidding to buy TikTok from its Chinese parent company ByteDance.

Trump, 78, has previously revealed that there is “great interest in TikTok” and that he has “spoken to many people” about a possible deal that would allow the app to operate in the United States long term.

Trump argued that a bidding war for TikTok would lead to a better deal. REUTERS

“I like bidding wars because you make your best deal,” the president said on his trip back to Washington from Miami Monday night.

“So if there’s a bidding war, that’s a good thing,” he added.

Trump halted the implementation of a congressionally approved ban on TikTok on his first day in office last week, postponing the prohibition by 75 days.

The president has said he wants ByteDance to sell at least a 50% share to an American partner.

Trump signaled that Microsoft is involved in talks to acquire TikTok from its Chinese parent company. REUTERS

Trump, however, has downplayed concerns that the Chinese Communist Party is using or could use the app to surveil Americans – the impetus for the legislation forcing ByteDance to divest from TikTok or face a US ban.

“Is it that important for China to be spying on young people, on young kids watching crazy videos?” Trump questioned during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity last week.

Last week, Reuters reported that the Trump administration was working on a plan to save TikTok that would see software company Oracle and a group of outside investors take control of the app’s operation, including data collection and software updates.

Others vying to acquire TikTok, include a group led by billionaire Frank McCourt and another involving YouTube streamer Jimmy Donaldson, better known as Mr. Beast, according to the outlet.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
