“The most stunning place in the UK” and “Britain’s most beautiful beach” – these are just some of the descriptions attributed to this renowned UK beach.

In West Penwith in West Cornwall, this tidal shoreline sits on the southern coast of the picturesque Penwith Peninsula and offers the sort of views that inspire paintings.

Regrettably for the wider public, they can now only see this too-stunning-to-be-true beauty spot from a distance.

Pedn Vounder Beach has long been regarded as amongst the most spectacular beaches in Cornwall, and indeed Britain, and a single glance at the former tourist destination would reveal precisely why.

What makes the beach so special

Previously a well-guarded Cornish secret, Pedn Vounder Beach rose to prominence after featuring in the popular BBC series Poldark in a dream sequence depicting the fictional Nampara Cove, reports Cornwall Live.

With its crystalline waters and near-perfectly white sand, Pedn Vounder Beach represents the material of dreams and has consistently topped the rankings of ‘must see’ locations in Cornwall.

At the tip of Cornwall, near the village of St Levan, the “Instagrammable” shoreline could only be accessed for a few hours daily (when it remained open to visitors) due to the hazardous shifting tides.

Nevertheless, its beauty proves so captivating and striking that it frequently secured places on prestigious ’50 Best Beaches in the World and the UK’ lists.

This secluded slice of paradise has even secured its reputation as “arguably the most beautiful beach in Cornwall” according to Cornwall Beaches.

The hidden tidal beach doubles as a breathtaking cove, situated immediately to the west of the iconic Logan Rock headland, directly below the equally beloved Treen Cliffs. It is widely claimed that Pedn Vounder “could give Bali’s beaches a run for their money”.

Easily mistaken for a tropical Caribbean island, Pedn Vounder Beach is nestled amongst the spectacular cliffs of the Treryn Dinas hillfort, just a stone’s throw from its perhaps slightly better-known neighbour, Porthcurno.

Before it gained worldwide recognition, Pedn Vounder Beach was well-known as one of the UK’s top “naturist friendly” spots.

Pedn Vounder Beach’s name roughly translates to “end of the lane” in the Cornish language, and the beach boasts an impressive 4.4 out of 5 rating on Tripadvisor, with one visitor writing: “Pedn Vounder Beach is hands down one of the most stunning places I’ve visited in the UK. Tucked away on the Cornish coast near Porthcurno, it feels completely untouched, turquoise waters, soft sand, and dramatic cliffs. Photos don’t do it justice.”

While one visitor wrote: “This beach cove really is gorgeous, the water is crystal clear and a stunning turquoise colour, you wouldn’t believe it’s in the UK!” another remarked of the Cornish beauty spot: “Wow! The best of Cornwall beaches and one of the best in the world.”

UK’s secret paradise – now inaccessible

Pedn Vounder Beach has been shut to the public since August 2025, a month after a tragic drowning incident at the beauty spot resulted in the death of a 31-year-old man on July 3, 2025.

Accessing Pedn Vounder Beach was no easy feat – with entry restricted to a demanding and treacherous coastal path that was just as difficult to descend as it was to ascend.

Being a tidal beach, numerous visitors over the years were reported to have been caught unawares by the unpredictable tides.

Bringing an end to its renowned tourist destination status, last August, the National Trust shut public access to Pedn Vounder Beach for safety concerns.

The National Trust website states: “The route to Pedn Vounder has been closed for safety reasons. The path has eroded in places making it unstable, with steep drops and ending in a near vertical 6m climb down onto the beach below.

“The sea at this location is also dangerous due to rip currents. There have been regular serious incidents involving the emergency services at this beach.

“Please use the beach at Porthcurno.”
