Early ‘Spider-Noir’ Reactions Compare Spider-Man Series to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’

Nicolas Cage returns to the superhero genre in the highly anticipated Spider-Noir, a new Prime Video series based on the alternate universe version of Spider-Man. After voicing him in the animated Spider-Verse franchise, Cage’s take on the hero is getting noir-driven action thriller that brings several iconic Marvel characters to the small screen. The first modern live-action Spider-Man television series arrives later this month, but early reactions have already compared the upcoming Prime Video title to another beloved superhero show.

While the official review embargo has not been lifted yet, some brief reactions to Spider-Noir have surfaced online. Grace Randolph said she was allowed to post on X that the show was “amazing,” calling it “Spider-Man meets Batman: The Animated Series.” Another critic, Nick Zednik, also went to X to share his (very) brief thoughts, simply calling Spider-Noir a “spectacular” series that should be on everyone’s radar. It’s unclear if they were able to watch all eight episodes, but critics will be able to share their complete review once the embargo lifts on May 22 (per Randolph).

Spider-Noir has an unusual release schedule strategy for a Prime Video series. All eight episodes will premiere on MGM+ linear broadcast on May 25, two days before also releasing globally on Prime Video. Unlike other superhero shows, including The Boys and Invincible, which release new episodes on a weekly basis, Spider-Noir will be a lengthy “binge” for subscribers. Fortunately, it already sounds like the series will be more than worth the watch, which bodes well for its chances to earn a second season, even if it may not be able to build up momentum week-to-week.

More to come.
