What we loved: A charming wellness retreat full of delightful surprises. Set amidst beautifully landscaped grounds, the resort boasts exceptional pool and spa facilities, with an elegant yet understated design that creates a genuine sense of escape. Despite its high calibre, the food and drinks are refreshingly well-priced, and every bit as impressive as the surroundings.
What we didn’t love: The resort isn’t beachfront and is located a short distance from Málaga’s city centre, which may be less convenient for travellers looking to be in the heart of the action. However, its location makes an excellent base for exploring the region, with many charming nearby towns within easy reach.
How to book: This hotel participates in the World of Hyatt program and is a Category 5 property, requiring between 15,000–35,000 points per night. During low season, cash rates often start from $350 CAD per night plus taxes and fees. If you’re booking a cash rate, be sure to get in touch with our travel agency, Prince Collection, for extra perks during your stay.
La Zambra Resort – About the Property
La Zambra became part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt in 2022, joining the brand’s portfolio of independent, story-driven hotels. Before that, the property operated for decades as the legendary Hotel Byblos, one of the Costa del Sol’s most iconic and luxurious addresses, known for its celebrity clientele.
The name itself is a lovely detail. “La Zambra” refers to a flamenco dance traditionally performed barefoot, signifying freedom, a fitting name for a resort that wants you to relax and unwind, leaving your shoes at the door.
The resort features 100 guest rooms and an impressive 96 suites, including 21 family suites. Throughout the property, bright corridors are illuminated by natural light, the gardens are impeccably maintained, and the design strikes a thoughtful balance between contemporary minimalism and the warmth of traditional Andalusian architecture.

Location
La Zambra is located in Mijas on the Costa del Sol, about 20 minutes from Málaga Airport (AGP) and 30 minutes from both Málaga city centre and Marbella. It’s also well positioned for day trips, with Ronda about 90 minutes away and Granada just under two hours. The nearest beach is a 15-minute drive, with a paid hotel shuttle available to a nearby beach club.
Having a rental car is a real advantage here, for getting around Malaga as well as exploring the broader region. Better yet, parking at the resort is complimentary.
Booking
For our stay, we booked using a combination of points and Fine Hotels + Resorts credits from my US American Express Business Platinum card, which kept our out-of-pocket spend low.
I redeemed 20,000 World of Hyatt points per night for a couple of nights at La Zambra. At Prince of Travel, we value World of Hyatt points at 2 cents per point (CAD), making this an good use of points compared to the cash rate of over $400 USD for our dates.
The Chase World of Hyatt Credit Card would be a great card to use for your stay to earn to earn an extra 4 Hyatt points per dollar on your stay, but if you don’t have US credit cards yet, then consider using the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card, which has no foreign transaction fees.
Check-In Experience
Heading into the resort, you drive through a residential neighbourhood framed by two golf courses before the property’s Andalusian design begins to reveal itself. Whitewashed walls, light wooden accents, open archways, and large glass doors and windows allow natural light to pour through the public spaces, bringing warmth to every corner of the property.

The lobby itself offered plenty of comfortable seating areas, creating a relaxed first impression.

Check-in was warm and unhurried. Staff were quick to assist with our luggage on arrival, and we were offered water at the front desk while completing the formalities. As a Globalist member, we received a warm recognition of my status and were presented with the following elite perks:
- Upgrade: Junior Suite Golf View with Sofa Bed
- Welcome amenity: A bottle of wine, a small bottle of olive oil (a great local souvenir to take home), and a charcuterie platter served in jars. The jars were a brilliant touch so that the cheese didn’t soften and the crackers stayed crisp.
- Late check-out: 4pm late check-out was offered proactively at check-in
- Breakfast: Breakfast is included for all guests
Junior Suite Golf View with Sofa Bed
The room itself was simple yet elegant, featuring a king bed, a large linen-upholstered sofa with decorative cushions, and light wood furnishings throughout.

At a minimum of 54 square meters, the suite felt exceptionally spacious, with a calming design centred around natural materials, neutral tones, and understated Andalusian influences. Windows brought in plenty of natural light, while soft lighting and woven accents added warmth to the otherwise minimalist aesthetic.

For those mixing business with leisure, a desk provides a comfortable place to work. The TV above the desk felt somewhat undersized for a room of this size and wasn’t positioned particularly well, though in fairness, we spent so little time indoors that we never ended up turning it on.

Every room at La Zambra comes with a balcony or terrace with seating. Mine overlooked resort pools and the neighbouring golf course and rolling hills beyond.

The suite’s open-concept layout flowed seamlessly into a generously sized dressing area with open wardrobes.

Next to this was a spacious bathroom finished in stone and warm earth tones. Here, guests will find dual vanities, a deep soaking tub, an enclosed water closet, and a large walk-in rainfall shower. While the robes provided were comfortable, I found them to run a little small. The toiletries were self-branded.

Waiting in the room was a thoughtful welcome amenity consisting of a bottle of wine and olive oil alongside a selection of charcuterie items presented in individual glass jars, a charming touch that immediately set the tone for the stay.

The beverage station included a Nespresso machine, teas, minibar, and complimentary bottled water.

Overall, the suite struck a balance between contemporary minimalism and resort comfort. It isn’t flashy, but the thoughtful design, generous space, and tranquil scenery made it an inviting place to unwind between spa visits and exploring the surrounding region.
For families, Junior Suites accommodate a maximum of two children and one baby. If quiet is your priority, a garden-view room tends to be the calmer option over the golf-view side. For larger families, opt for a family suite which features adjoining rooms.
King Bed Deluxe Room
During my visit, I also had the chance to see their standard room. The aesthetic was identical to the Junior Suite and the rest of the property, with the same whitewashed walls, light wood furnishings, and understated Andalusian feel, just on a smaller footprint at 38–40 square meters. By European standards, the room still felt quite spacious.

The key differences come down to space. The bathroom skips the soaking tub in favour of just the shower, and the balcony is noticeably more compact.

For travellers who don’t need the extra square footage or the tub, the Deluxe King still delivers the same look and feel as the rest of the resort.

Food and Drink
Across its four dining venues, La Zambra showcases local Spanish ingredients and products, which adds a nice regional touch to the culinary experience. What stood out most, however, was the value. Despite the resort’s luxury positioning, food and drinks were refreshingly reasonable, with pizzas starting at €16 and mojitos at €14, far from the inflated markups often found at high-end resorts.
Palmito is the the all-day Mediterranean restaurant, which doubles as the breakfast venue and serves the pool deck during the day. The menu rotates every few months.

Breakfast is included for all guests and it was excellent, consistent of a continental buffet with an extensive selection of vitality drinks and smoothies, charcuterie, breads and pastries, salads, fresh fruit, and more. There’s a small gluten-free section too. Eggs, waffles, and crepes can be ordered à la carte.

On our final morning, we had an early flight, and the hotel packed continental breakfast boxes for us to take away. They even asked about our preferences beforehand, a thoughtful touch that I greatly appreciated.
Dinner was fabulous here and I particularly enjoyed their seafood dishes. My only regret was leaving not enough room to try the paella.

Picador is the property’s signature Andalusian restaurant with a focus on family-style dining. Note that Picador is closed Sundays and Mondays and reservations are recommended.

The food at Picador had great presentation and taste. The beef tartare, tuna with avocado, and seafood dishes were highlights.

The pizza here was a standout, with an authentic Neapolitan style that easily exceeded expectations.

Located by the resort’s second pool, La Bartola is a seasonal pool bar that opens from Easter onwards, serving fish, tapas, and snacks.
Two scheduled touches worth knowing about at dining venues are the live music runs on Thursdays and Fridays, and the resort even hosts flamenco shows on Saturdays during the summer.
Other Facilities
Beyond the rooms and dining venues, La Zambra has plenty more on offer to round out a stay.
There are beautifully manicured gardens throughout the property and subtle details, from the fountains to the tile work carried over from the original Byblos days, quietly pay homage to the resort’s Andalusian roots.

La Zambra has four pool areas for guests to enjoy, with two indoor heated pool areas inside the spa, and two outdoor pool areas.

Both outdoor pools are family-friendly, but the one fronted by La Bartola is the better pick for younger kids thanks to its shallow zero-entry design. Hours for all outdoor pools run from 11am to 7pm.

You’ll need to grab your own towels and set up your own chair, but staff do come around to take drink and food orders from Palmito, and there’s a call button if you need help.

The view from the main pool, looking over the infinity edge onto the golf course and the rolling Andalusian landscape beyond, was the relaxing moments of our stay.

If you prefer to relax in an indoors setting, visit the Mood Spa. Aside from the usual spa treatments, it also houses a spa circuit that includes a heated pool, a jacuzzi, a vitality pool, two saunas, a hammam steam room, and a Nordic cold bucket shower.

The weather during our mid-May visit was cooler than I’d expected, which made the spa one of the best spaces on property for a quiet pause that was warm, welcoming, and with plenty of loungers.
The spa circuit is complimentary for suite guests, including Junior Suites, for 90 minutes per day (normally €30 per person). Smoothies in the spa are also discounted to €5 (from the regular €8). Kids are welcome to visit with an adult during the hours of 3-5pm daily.
The resort also houses an extensive gym facility, with aerobic machines and free weights, and indoor and outdoor sections that are open 24/7.

Tennis and padel courts can be booked for €30 per hour, equipment included.
Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the resort’s proximity to Mijas Golf Club, which features two courses designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. Green fees are not included with the stay, but the resort can offer package rates.
The resort also runs a steady rotation of complimentary activities throughout the week for guests, including morning yoga, gin tasting, wine tasting, olive oil tasting, and more.

To help parents have some me-time, the resort runs a supervised Kids Club that’s open to children aged 6 months to 10 years from 10am to 6pm daily. Pricing is €50 for a full day, €30 for a half day, or €15 per hour. Babysitting is also available outside these hours through an external company.

If you’re looking to relax and spend time with family or friends, the resort also offers plenty of inviting spaces to gather and socialize.

While La Zambra isn’t beachfront, the resort has a collaboration with La Familia Beach Club, offering a €40 return shuttle that includes a beach bag with towels, reserved sunbeds with an umbrella, and the option to have lunch on-site at the beach club.
Conclusion
La Zambra is a peaceful luxury wellness retreat tucked away in a quiet pocket of Andalusia. If you don’t mind being away from the beach and Málaga’s core, it’s one of the most rewarding Costa del Sol points stays you’ll come across, with a low-
With gorgeous Andalusian grounds, an excellent spa, reasonable priced food, and spacious rooms, I would love to come back in a heartbeat. La Zambra is a destination in its own right, a nice place to spend a few nights and pair with a broader road trip through the region.
