Alan Ritchson’s Blockbuster Netflix Action Sequel Officially Sets Perfect New Title

Alan Ritchson may have risen to prominence with his work in the Prime Video series Reacher, which is about to release its fourth season in August, but he now has a different level of success altogether. The actor has played supporting roles in some big action movies in the past, but has now more recently begun headlining action films all on his own. Upcoming movies like Motor City or the recently announced in-development Maelstrom are fine examples of how his popularity has allowed him more work, and other movies, like the Netflix original War Machine, also prove that they can be a success.

War Machine was one of the biggest movies for Netflix in 2026, so much so that it justified the development of a sequel. Director and co-writer Patrick Hughes had previously teased that a sequel for War Machine was in the works, and that the ideas he had for future installments could blow this first film out of the water. Now, it’s been confirmed by Netflix that a sequel to War Machine is in development. The title of the movie has also been revealed, and it’s about as James Cameron-esque as a movie title can get.

An Instagram post from the director revealed that the sequel will be titled War Machines, undoubtedly taking inspiration from the sequel to Alien that would define a generation, with Cameron simply changing it from singular to plural with Aliens. The image showcases the script cover and a mech statue, teasing that pre-production on the film could begin soon. This new social media post also reveals that Hughes is once again writing the script with James Beaufort, who is also credited as a writer on the first movie. The post itself is also comedic, as each slide zooms in on the “s” at the end of War Machines.

Anyone surprised by the announcement of a sequel would also only need to look at the first slide of the post that Hughes posted. Featuring a graph of the 10 most-watched Netflix movies this year, War Machine sits at the top with 147 million views. The only movies that come close are the Ben Affleck and Matt Damon movie The Rip, and the animated films Swapped and KPop Demon Hunters. Considering that one of these movies was released a year ago, it’s impressive to see how popular War Machine has become since it dropped on the streaming service on March 6.

Ritchson made his own social media post to celebrate the massive viewership numbers of War Machine, while also teasing the future of the sci-fi action world of the movie, saying: “Top 10 films of all time on Netflix is crazy. But this was just the appetizer. Wild times ahead. We’re just getting started.” The website What’s on Netflix has reported that, according to production listings, the movie is in development with a budget between $50 million and $100 million. If the movie’s name (and the influences that led to that title) are anything to go by, War Machines is set to be a massive action-packed sequel that doubles down on the scale and ambition of the first film.
