The Bosch TV franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon, especially when the upcoming prequel series has ramped up filming. Renewed for a second season, Ballard will also focus on Renee Ballard (Maggie Q), Harry Bosch’s (Titus Welliver) frequent collaborator in the novel series. Welliver had always asserted that his character could have taken on more cases lifted from or inspired by the Bosch books — speaking to MovieWeb, he teased they’re making headway into adapting a new story.
Author Michael Connelly has so far written 23 Bosch-led books, on top of crossovers with The Lincoln Lawyer novels. That’s why it was bittersweet for Welliver, and for Bosch fans, when Amazon cancelled Bosch: Legacy. It was the direct sequel and extension of the original Bosch series, which ran for seven seasons and 68 episodes on Prime Video. Producers decided to wrap up that show in Season 7, when it had become the streaming platform’s longest-running original series. The silver lining was Bosch: Legacy, which ran for three seasons on Amazon Freevee.
While speaking with MovieWeb in support of The Westies, Welliver said there’s still plenty of source material to adapt for another Bosch TV series:
“That show potentially, when you consider all the books that Michael Connelly’s written, that character could go on for a very, very long time. There’s still a lot more books to mine for material, and I feel like the fans would really like it. They didn’t get proper closure, for lack of a better word.”
The Bosch TV franchise draws storylines from multiple books, often blending these with original plotlines to form a season’s overarching narrative. Bosch Seasons 1 to 7 adapted plots from at least 16 novels, and at least two in Bosch: Legacy. Last April, Welliver confirmed that he had informal conversations with Connelly about Bosch: Legacy Season 4, but there’s still no definitive update. He said the producers are likely busy with Bosch: Start of Watch, the prequel series focused on Bosch’s origin story.
Start of Watch is venturing into uncharted territory, since there were only fragments of passages about Bosch’s early life in the novel series. Cameron Monaghan (Gotham, Tron: Ares) is set to play 26-year-old Harry Bosch, then a rookie LAPD cop serving a politically fragmented and chaotic Los Angeles in the early ’90s. Start of Watch is expected to premiere later this year on MGM+.
The TV shows clearly haven’t exhausted storylines from the Bosch novels. While partially adapted in Bosch Season 1, The Black Echo is a strong candidate for a TV feature or full-length movie. The Black Echo delved deeper into Bosch’s Vietnam backstory and moral code — “Everybody counts or nobody counts.” As the first installment in the novel series, it also serves as a perfect launch pad for sequel movies.
Welliver said that they’re already eyeing Bosch books to adapt, teasing concrete plans for a movie: “I can’t really discuss it because it’s something that has been in discussion, but I don’t know which particular books we would choose.”
