CBS Is Officially Bringing Back Blue Bloods’ Best Duo

Across its 14-season run, one of Blue Bloods’ greatest strengths was its ability to build compelling relationships, which is why it’s exciting that CBS will be bringing the show’s best duo to Boston Blue season 2. The Reagan family was and is a complicated, intertwined tree. Throughout the run of the original series, despite the fact that the family were always dealing with intense cases and difficult decisions, their most important relationships, both on and off the job, were with each other. Though Blue Bloods was a police procedural on the surface, it functioned more often as a family drama.

While Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) was the leader of the family who shaped every dynamic, the Reagan children were all specific and intentional, creating different types of relationships with each other and their individual families. Viewers enjoyed the fact that each of the Reagan’s had their own relationships to deal with, whether it was Erin (Bridget Moynhan) and detective Anthony Abetemarco (Steven Schirripa) or Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and his late wife Linda (Amy Carlson). Blue Bloods created complicated dynamics that viewers were excited to see transition over to the show’s spinoff, Boston Blue, including the original’s best Reagan family pairing.

As Boston Blue season 2 gets ready to launch, the show has taken the opportunity to lean into the sheer amount of love that its viewers have for Blue Bloods by bringing back the best duo in the Reagan family with Will Estes excitingly reprising his role as Jamie Reagan.

Danny & Jamie Reagan Were Always Blue Bloods’ Strongest Partnership

Although Blue Bloods featured seemingly endless pairs of characters between the Reagan family and their most trusted, the best dynamic of the show was between Wahlberg’s Danny and Estes’ Jamie. Their relationship, both as brothers and as colleagues, occupied a unique position within the scope of the series. While Danny started out the show as an experienced detective who’d already climbed the ranks, Jamie was just starting out as a rookie officer. As Blue Bloods continued, the brothers had to recognize their existing relationship couldn’t get in the way of either of them doing their jobs, regardless of happenstance.

As Jamie grew into a respected officer, eventually becoming a sergeant, Danny got to watch his brother turn into the man he’d always believed he could be. The pair’s ability to bounce off of each other was a great piece of the Blue Bloods puzzle, and bringing Jamie over to Boston Blue in order to reprise his role will see another new iteration of the pair. As one of the emotional anchors of the series, Danny and Jamie’s connection is something that viewers are likely missing while watching the spinoff. Thankfully, Boston Blue is set to deliver their dynamic.

Boston Blue Still Needs One More Reagan Return To Complete The Family Portrait

Although Estes is set to return to the franchise with appearances in Boston Blue season 2, the real reunion that viewers of the CBS franchise are waiting for isn’t between Danny and Jamie. Most Blue Bloods fans have been hopeful that Selleck, who played patriarch Frank Reagan across the 14 seasons of the series, will have the opportunity to reprise his role in the new spinoff series. While it seemed like it may be an important part of passing the torch throughout Boston Blue season 1, Frank never made it into the new CBS series.

Now, with Boston Blue season 2 bringing Estes back into the fold and currently already having seen appearances from Moynahan, Len Cariou as Henry Reagan, and Will Hochan as Joe Hill, the series feels like it’s bringing every other Blue Bloods cast member back. Despite the fact that Selleck, who has been outspoken about feeling snubbed by the way that CBS handled Blue Bloods’ cancellation and Boston Blue’s pickup, is a cornerstone of the franchise, his appearance on Boston Blue is still unconfirmed. For now, having a Danny and Jamie reunion this season will have to be enough for viewers.
