Chaka Khan shared that she is content with being on her own after two divorces. The 73-year-old music legend, who is known as the Queen of Funk, said she is going to take life as it comes and “let life do what it do.”

During an August 20 interview with the U.K.’s Observer, Khan opened up about the meaning behind the lyric, “I’ve been waiting all my life for this moment,” featured on her upcoming album Chakzilla.
She said, “I don’t want to discuss that, because if I talk too much about what I would like to have, somebody will try to arrange it for me. So I’m just going to mosey along and let life do what it do. One of them is not necessarily a partner.” She further added, “I’m not looking for a relationship. I’m partnered out.”
Khan married Hassan Khan at the age of 17 in 1970. Their marriage ended in divorce the following year. She later married Richard Holland in 1976. The couple welcomed a son, Damien, during their marriage. They remained married for four years before divorcing in 1980.
Khan told The Guardian in 2019 that her second marriage created tension within Rufus, the funk group she led in the 1970s. “They didn’t want me to have a husband,” she said. “When the band first went on tour, every night, after a gig, they would all do a walk-through of my room to make sure I was by myself. They didn’t care who it was – no one could come and visit me. They were just very possessive of their little diamond.”
In 2017, Khan revealed to the outlet that both marriages left her questioning whether her partners loved her public persona, Chaka Khan, or her real identity, Yvette Stevens. She added that it would take a “man of biblical proportions” for her to consider marriage again.
The 10-time Grammy winner began her music career by singing with local groups as a teenager. She later rose to fame as a member of Rufus. Khan’s performances caught the attention of Stevie Wonder, who went on to write Tell Me Something Good, one of Rufus’ biggest hits. The song earned Khan her first Grammy Award. The singer is currently preparing to release her 13th solo album, Chakzilla, in September.
