The X-Files made David Duchovny an icon of TV sci-fi, but the star’s film output has been notably lacking in further encounters with aliens, supernatural entities, or anything else Fox Mulder might have run into on a week-by-week basis. Perhaps looking to avoid typecasting, Duchovny has mixed things up in his movie choices, taking on hard-hitting dramas, romantic-comedies, and almost everything else that isn’t science fiction or horror, with only a couple of notable exceptions.
One of those rare Duchovny sci-fi efforts came out while the star’s X-Files run was still underway, and saw him poking fun at the genre in a manner that didn’t go over very well with audiences at the time. 2001’s Evolution saw the Fox Mulder actor back in alien investigation mode, but this time with a comedic slant courtesy of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.

DreamWorks perhaps was counting on Duchovny’s name bringing X-Files fans on-board for Evolution, but if so, the plan didn’t work out, as the movie was not successful at the box office, grossing just $98.4 million on a budget of $80 million. 25 years later, Evolution has become a hit on the global streaming charts, rocketing to #3 on HBO Max’s worldwide list, as of August 24, 2026.
A closer look at Evolution’s streaming performance sees it sitting all the way up at #2 in many global markets, mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean, but its average is brought down enough by its performance elsewhere to see it end up at #3 overall. The 2001 movie is topped on the list by only the 2026 release Mortal Kombat II, and 2025’s Killing Faith.
Evolution Was A Unique Mixture Of X-Files & Ghostbusters
It Has Since Gotten A Major Cult Following
Duchovny’s presence is the most obvious connection between Evolution and The X-Files, but the film’s very set-up itself feels like the premise of a classic Fox Mulder-Dana Scully investigation. Instead of a brooding FBI agent, Duchovny this time plays a college professor studying a meteor impact, who discovers an alien life form that possesses the ability to rapidly evolve from simple to complex. The Evolution aliens even secrete a blue fluid reminiscent of the black goo central to X-Files’ convoluted mythology.
The X-Files comparisons end there, however, as Evolution’s tone is much closer to the sci-fi/comedy feel of its director’s classic Ghostbusters. If DreamWorks was indeed expecting a hit on par with Ivan Reitman’s 1984 blockbuster, they were sorely disappointed, though Evolution has built up a cult following over the years, and was even lauded in a 2025 ScreenRant article for recapturing the Ghostbusters magic much more effectively than any of that movie’s many official sequels.
