Donnie Yen’s New Role Is A Callback To His Legendary 2004 Performance

It has been officially confirmed that actor Donnie Yen is set to star in a brand-new role, which already looks like a callback to a legendary performance he delivered back in 2004. The Hong Kong actor is best known for his roles in several action movies, like those from the Ip Man series, as well as Star Wars and John Wick. He has decades of experience, and some of Donnie Yen’s best old-school kung fu movies are also some of the best in the genre.

His expertise has proven to be invaluable, and now, it’s been confirmed that Donnie Yen is part of an upcoming project that has him starring in a new role. Confirmed via an official post made by Donnie Yen on Instagram, has been involved with a video game project, and his role in it is split into two distinct functions. We’ll be able to see more of it soon, as the game is set to be released in late October.

Donnie Yen’s Role In Phantom Blade Zero

Donnie Yen is revealed as the facial and motion capture actor for Mó Yuan in Phantom Blade Zero.

According to the post, Donnie Yen is officially involved with the release of Phantom Blade Zero, scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 29. The post explains that the actor has served as a Creative Consultant for the game since 2023, and that he has helped mold the title’s combat design with his expertise in martial arts and action filmmaking. On top of all that, he has a secondary role in the game.

Donnie Yen has been revealed to be the facial and motion capture actor for Mó Yuan, a major character in Phantom Blade Zero. Up until now, the character had appeared as a mysterious masked entity in the trailers for the game. With the post came a new gameplay trailer, showcasing a battle against Mó Yuan, which already has the potential to enter the list of Donnie Yen’s best martial arts fight scenes, even if applied in an interactive medium.

Despite his huge repertoire of martial arts and action movies, Donnie Yen hasn’t been especially involved with video games. In 2004, the actor was responsible for the majority of the fight animation choreography in Onimusha 3. In 2017, he confirmed his participation in the movie adaptation of the video game Sleeping Dogs. However, he has since confirmed that the Sleeping Dogs movie has been canceled.

Effectively, this means that Phantom Blade Zero is his first video game project in over 22 years. During our preview of Phantom Blade Zero at Gamescom Latam 2026, a developer told me that real-life martial artists had served as motion capture artists for the game’s combat animations. However, Donnie Yen’s participation was kept under wraps until now – and, truth be told, it’s a great way of advertising the game, which is now available for pre-orders.
