After 15 Years, Minecraft Is Officially Entering A New Era

Minecraft had some big announcements to make at the Minecraft LIVE showcase today, marking the third major livestream event of the year for the eternally popular sandbox game. While both previous events included some interesting revelations, like the reveal of Minecraft Dungeons 2 in March and the release date announcement for the Chaos Cubed update in May, the latest has them beat.

Since its 1.0 release date in 2011, Minecraft has contained exactly three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether, and The End, the latter of which was the last to be added nearly 15 years ago. Thanks to a Minecraft LIVE reveal, that status quo is finally going to change.

Minecraft is officially adding a new dimension, as announced in the Minecraft LIVE – September 2026 broadcast available on the official Minecraft YouTube channel. Called the Sift, this major addition is making its way over from Minecraft Dungeons 2, where players will first be able to experience it on September 29, 2026. That will be the only taste of the new dimension for some months to come, as it won’t arrive in Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition until some time in 2027.

The Sift brings an unusual atmosphere to Minecraft, with pinkish blocks and blue-green vegetation creating a look that’s alien to anything players have experienced in the game so far. It naturally comes with new creatures of its own, ranging from the adorable, rabbit-like Blubs to threatening Minecraft Dungeons 2 bosses, like the Sculk Montrosity.

Not only is the Sift a massive expansion for Minecraft, but its planned release opens the door for Minecraft to embrace more radical changes than ever before. While the game has been steadily adding new content ever since its 1.0 release, the introduction of a new dimension for the first time suggests that more could come in the future.

This could also be a boon for Minecraft Dungeons 2, as getting a taste of an upcoming Minecraft dimension could lead more players to check out the game. Unlike Minecraft‘s sandbox survival formula, the Dungeons games deliver a light Diablo-like experience, tasking players with steadily progressing through threatening environments as they hack and slash through enemies.

Naturally, the Sift isn’t the only big announcement of the new Minecraft LIVE showcase. Ice caves and frozen zombies will add some new variety to more familiar Minecraft biomes, and new Sound Effects packs for the Minecraft Marketplace increase the overall possibilities for customization.

It’s not news, but the showcase also contained a reminder that Minecraft will officially launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 in just over a month, arriving on October 27, 2026. This is far from the first time the game has been available on a handheld platform, but with more powerful hardware than ever before, that might be a great way to experience all the new things that Minecraft has in store.
