There’s no denying that Harlan Coben and Netflix go hand in hand. The streaming giant has adapted no less than 13 of the author’s novels, with more on the way. While seven of those have been in English, the other six all come from various countries, including Spain, Poland, and France. Each one has been a success in its own right, and now, Netflix has found something new to tide viewers over until the next Coben adaptation comes our way. The best part? It hits streaming in a little over two weeks.
The Past Is Never the Past in Netflix’s Newest Thriller
Based on German author Melanie Raabe’s 2015 novel, The Trap is a psychological thriller starring Friederike Becht as Lisa Konrad, a successful author who, after witnessing the murder of her sister, Anna, has been living a secluded life for the past 10 years. Essentially a shut-in, everything changes when Lisa believes she recognizes her sister’s killer on television. Rather than go to the cops for help, she devises an elaborate plan to trap the killer, using herself as bait.
Created by Isabel Kleefeld (Dear Child), The Trap also stars Hans Löw, Matthias Brandt, Josephine Thiesen, and Michael Klammer, to name a few. Serving as Raabe’s debut thriller, the book became an instant bestseller not just in Germany, but around the globe. Though it was first optioned by TriStar for a Hollywood feature, that project never came to fruition. It eventually landed on Netflix’s doorstep, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Sharing DNA with many of Coben’s novels, The Trap aims to deliver an intense thriller where the past refuses to stay buried. Like many of the Run Away author’s protagonists, Lisa refuses to stay quiet about what she believes to be true, and before long, is in a position of uncertainty as she tracks down her sister’s killer. Becoming a dangerous mystery, all six episodes of The Trap are set to hit Netflix on Oct. 13, and (hopefully) follow in the footsteps of the highly successful I Will Find You, which dominated streaming over the summer. What’s Next for Harlan Coben and Netflix?
Following the massive success of I Will Find You this past summer, Netflix shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to turning Coben’s books into small screen hits. Not only are they in the process of making an English-language version of the Polish smash, The Woods, but they’re also bringing to life one of the author’s most popular characters.
Bursting onto the scene in 1995’s Deal Breaker, Myron Bolitar is a former basketball player turned sports agent. Along with the help of Windsor “Win” Horne Lockwood III and Esperanza Diaz, the trio often find themselves investigating murders and conspiracies on behalf of Bolitar’s clients. Colin Woodell (Pulse, The Continental) is all set to portray Myron, while KJ Apa (Riverdale, I Still Believe) will play Lockwood, and Diane Guerrero (Orange Is The New Black, The Lincoln Lawyer) will star as Diaz. No release date has been set.
