Darlene Love, the legendary singer whose career spans decades of pop and rock history, is getting a documentary of her own. Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been premiered at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) 2026, 13 years after she appeared in the acclaimed music documentary 20 Feet From Stardom.
The new film puts Love at the center of her own story. At 85, she is the focus of a documentary that looks back at the triumphs and hardships that shaped her career.

Directed by Barry Avrich, I Know Where I’ve Been explores Love’s decades-long career. The documentary traces her early work with producer Phil Spector in the 1960s, as well as her later comeback and collaborations with major artists.
Love first gained recognition with “He’s a Rebel” before contributing vocals to The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” and Boris Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” Her career later took a difficult turn. She stepped away from music to raise her family and eventually cleaned homes in Beverly Hills to make ends meet.
She returned to music in the 1980s and went on to work with Bruce Springsteen, Cher, Paul Shaffer and Taraji P. Henson, who serves as an executive producer on the documentary.
During an interview with TheWrap, Avrich praised Love’s lasting talent. He said, “When you think about her voice and you think about her career, it’s the alchemy of the greats.”
Henson also highlighted Love’s resilience: “All the odds were stacked against her, and she still prevailed. That’s inspiration. That’s a story that is needed now, and I think the universe lined it up this way.” For Love, the documentary represents long-awaited recognition. She remarked, “In the film, I say this about me, and I didn’t always say it: It’s my turn.”
The documentary is currently seeking distribution.
