If you went online looking for a new Lioness episode this week, I have some bad news: Season 3 is over. But the good news is that the show itself feels far from finished. Lioness Season 3’s finale leaves the door wide open for another season, and while Paramount+ hasn’t officially renewed it for Season 4 yet, I would be shocked if the streamer or Taylor Sheridan just left things there.
In the meantime, there’s no point refreshing Paramount+ wondering what to watch next, because Prime Video has another action thriller ready to fill the Lioness-shaped hole in your heart. Neagley may have started life as a Reacher spin-off, but after watching those eight episodes, I can tell you that it has more than earned its right to stand on its own. So if you’re still looking for something with brutal fights and efficient leads, this is an easy option.
‘Neagley’ Is More Than a ‘Reacher’ Spin-off
Reacher enthusiasts already know the name. Maria Sten has played Frances Neagley, Jack Reacher’s former Army protégé, since Season 1, and Prime Video finally gave her a show of her own. All eight episodes dropped at once on Sept. 16, the same day Reacher Season 4 wrapped up, and the timing was just perfect.
The show has a simple setup. Neagley is working as a private investigator in Chicago when a childhood friend dies in what looks like a suicide. She doesn’t buy it, and pulling on that thread, she uncovers a black-market operation running out of a commune that looks harmless and peaceful from the outside. It’s a smaller, tighter story than anything Reacher has done in its four seasons, but it’s effective regardless.
Here’s what I loved about the series, though. Reacher is a thrilling watch because Alan Ritchson is a formidable man. He shows up, solves the problem, explains nothing, and leaves. Neagley flips that habit. She’s not a mystery we can’t wait to solve. She’s got a father who calls her out for burying herself in work instead of grieving, a partner at her agency she actually trusts, and a way of processing violence that we can relate to. I went in expecting a Reacher-esque series riding on a familiar face, but I came out thinking Sten might be a better lead than Ritchson.
The numbers back it up too. Neagley debuted to an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score and is currently sitting with a 94% rating, which puts it right up against Reacher Season 1’s launch. For a first-season spin-off carrying the weight of a character everyone already loved from someone else’s story, that’s not easy to pull off.
Why ‘Neagley’ Is the Perfect Follow-up to ‘Lioness’
The appeal of Neagley following Lioness is pretty simple. I love Lioness due to Joe’s competence under pressure and the way it refuses to let her trauma stay off-screen. Neagley does something similar. Both shows are led by women who are the most feared person in every room they walk into. The tone lines up, too. Lioness spent Season 3 slowly peeling back a conspiracy that turned out to be more revenge-based instead of political. The Prime Video series does it, too, just on a smaller scale. It starts with one death and unravels into something much bigger, but the central mystery gives it a clean shape. I actually found that refreshing after the increasingly sprawling world of Lioness, where the ugly consequences of covert missions take up the spotlight.
So while we wait to find out whether Lioness gets that Season 4 renewal, Neagley is probably the easiest recommendation Prime Video could have made. It has the action, the military edge, and the personality to keep the binge going. And thankfully, you don’t need to wait week after week for a new episode, because all eight are currently streaming.
