If you have Best Western elite status, your tier is about to be reshuffled. On October 28, 2026, the company behind Best Western Rewards said the program will merge with WorldHotels Rewards on January 5, 2027, and its five elite tiers will become three.
BWH Hotels, Best Western’s parent company, is also renaming itself WorldHotels. The details that matter most, including the new tier names and what it takes to earn them, won’t be revealed until November 16, 2026.
What’s Changing, and When
WorldHotels is now the umbrella brand for more than 4,000 hotels across 18 brands in over 100 countries. Best Western stays as one of its flagship brands, and individual hotels keep their names, signs, and flags.
The two loyalty programs, with about 70 million members combined, become one WorldHotels Rewards program. You’ll be able to earn and redeem points at both Best Western and WorldHotels properties, and a new website and redesigned app arrive with the launch.
The key dates are as follows:
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| October 28, 2026 | BWH Hotels becomes WorldHotels and announces the merger |
| November 16, 2026 | Tier names, requirements, and benefits are announced |
| Until early January 2027 | Members keep their current tier and benefits |
| January 5, 2027 | WorldHotels Rewards launches |
Five Elite Tiers Will Become Three
Best Western Rewards has five tiers today, based on qualifying nights in a calendar year. Our Best Western Rewards guide covers the program in more detail.
| Tier | Qualifying nights | Bonus points |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | 0 | None |
| Gold | 5 | 10% |
| Platinum | 7 | 15% |
| Diamond | 15 | 30% |
| Diamond Select | 25 | 50% |
Your status does carry over. WorldHotels says your current tier moves automatically to “the corresponding tier” in the new program, along with your points and qualifying activity, but it hasn’t said yet which new tier each of today’s levels corresponds to.
Fitting five tiers into three means some of today’s tiers will end up sharing a level. Whether that happens at the bottom, with Gold and Platinum, or at the top, with Diamond and Diamond Select, won’t be clear until November 16.
It matters for longer than you might think. Best Western’s current terms say a tier earned in 2026 lasts through December 2027, so wherever you land will shape all of next year.
WorldHotels Rewards already uses the same elite tiers with the same night requirements. WorldHotels also says lifetime status and new milestone rewards are coming, with full benefit details before the launch.
Your Points and Bookings Carry Over
Very little else changes for members. Your points move over automatically at the same value, and they still never expire.
- Your membership number stays the same, and you can now also use just its last 10 digits
- Current and future reservations are honoured, however you paid for them
- Status matching and member rates stay
- There’s nothing you need to do, and WorldHotels will email you once your account is updated
WorldHotels says points keep their current value, but it hasn’t said how award prices will work in the new program. Today, a free night costs a number of points based on the hotel’s expected average daily rate, and that’s the other thing I’ll be watching on November 16.

Hotels themselves won’t look any different, either. The Best Western name stays on the building, and the change happens behind the scenes in the loyalty program and the booking channels.
Matching Your Status Now or After the Merger
If you have elite status with another hotel chain, Best Western will match it for free, with no stays to complete. WorldHotels says status matching stays in the new program, so this isn’t a now-or-never offer.
Best Western matches you to an equivalent tier, never a higher one, and it doesn’t publish a matching chart. In practice, it’s been generous. When I matched my Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite status back in 2021, Best Western upgraded my account straight to Diamond Select.

Members with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite have reported the same result as recently as this year. Some have even reached Diamond or Diamond Select from Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite or Hilton Honors Gold, which both come with the American Express Platinum Card in Canada.
The case for matching now is that the status migrates. Under the current terms, a tier from a 2026 match lasts through December 2027, and in January it moves to the corresponding WorldHotels Rewards tier like any other member’s status.
The case for waiting is that a match in January 2027 might last through the end of 2028, if the new program keeps the same rule. But we won’t know that, or how generous the new program’s matches will be, until WorldHotels shares the details.
To apply, email StatusMatch@bestwestern.com with your name, address, email, phone number, Best Western Rewards number, and a screenshot or statement showing your other status. Reported turnaround times range from a few minutes to about a day, though my own reply came with an apology for the wait during a busy stretch.
WorldHotels Rewards runs its own free status match with the same tiers and the same through-2027 rule, so if you’re a WorldHotels member instead, email StatusMatch@worldhotels.com. Either match carries over, since both programs become one in January.
Is Best Western Status Worth Having?
On its own, not by much today. Gold members get a bottle of water and 500 bonus points at check-in, and Platinum and above get early check-in or late checkout when it’s available, plus bonus points of up to 50%.

Breakfast and room upgrades aren’t part of the published benefits. The case for matching is what comes next, since WorldHotels says the new program will offer “more recognition and benefits as you move up.”
A top tier in 2027 could be worth more than it is now. But if you don’t have Best Western stays coming up, there’s no rush, and November 16 will show what each new tier actually gets.
Best Western status can also help elsewhere. Hilton’s status match accepts it, though Hilton asks for proof of a stay with that program within the last 24 months, and you can only match to Hilton once.
Saving on Best Western Stays with a Canadian Credit Card
Canada hasn’t had a Best Western credit card since 2023. MBNA ended its partnership with Best Western on September 12, 2023, and converted its Best Western card into the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus® Mastercard® the next day.
The card had been an afterthought for years by then, with a welcome bonus stuck at 20,000 points after once reaching 60,000. Now that Best Western is part of a much bigger global portfolio, I wonder whether WorldHotels will look for a new Canadian partner and bring back a revamped card.
Until then, Amex Offers are one of the few ways to save with a Canadian credit card. In 2023, a targeted offer gave $20 back on a $100 spend at participating Best Western hotels in Canada, and Scotiabank’s American Express cards were eligible too.
WorldHotels offers have been bigger. A targeted offer in 2024 gave $150 back on $750 at WorldHotels properties, and last year, there was one for $200 back on $1,000 through December 31, 2025.
A Best Western offer is running right now with $50 back on $250 at Best Western and SureStay hotels in the US and Canada through December 31, 2026. However, it’s only on US-issued American Express cards.
If a WorldHotels offer like that comes back in Canada, I’ll definitely take a second look now that Best Western is under WorldHotels. I recently spotted a cool design hotel in Seoul’s Cheongdam neighbourhood, and it turned out to be Aiden by Best Western Cheongdam.

I haven’t stayed there yet, but it’s made me willing to give the portfolio a real try. Since Amex Offers are targeted, it’s worth checking your account every so often, and our guide to Amex Offers explains how they work.
Should You Do Anything Else Before January?
Not really. Your points and bookings are protected, and the merger happens on its own.
I’d hold off on booking extra stays to reach a higher tier until November 16, since nobody knows yet which of today’s tiers will map to which new level.
And if you have a stay coming up before the end of the year, Best Western’s double points promotion covers qualified stays through December 31, 2026 for members who registered, as we noted alongside the gift card promotion in September.
Conclusion
Best Western has never been an aspirational program, but it fills real gaps in smaller Canadian towns. When I travelled to Nanaimo a few years ago, the Best Western Dorchester was one of the few good options in town.
A bigger network under WorldHotels could make the points more useful, since you’ll be able to redeem them at WorldHotels properties too. But the program will live or die on the November 16 details, and those details will also show whether it’s better to match now or wait.
If the new top tier adds perks Best Western Rewards doesn’t offer across the board, like breakfast, losing two tiers could be worth it. If it just raises the bar, Diamond Select members will feel it most. We’ll update this post when the details come out.
